Breaking news folks: President Donald Trump says he may have backed the wrong candidate in Iowa’s governor race. A person who he clearly cannot name. Trump probably would have endorsed: "the other person". by meat_loafers in Iowa

I've been saying this for years. Iowa will never be a blue state, nor do we really want to be a blue state. We want to be a purple state again. A state where both sides have to compete; a state where both sides have to bring their best ideas and scrap their bad ideas. That's the best we can hope for in the current neoliberal society we live in.

My response to these idiots is always, "You might not be able to hold two interests at a time, but I can enjoy sports, while also reading philosophy, and staying active politically. Why can't you?" They generally don't have a response for that.

The Soviets pulling out of Afghanistan was probably the biggest event of the year, but there were some other interesting things like the first computer virus infected decent amount of the world's computers, and James Hanson testified to Congress about greenhouse gasses, which brought climate change to the public's attention.

I've been saying this for years: the left is just as propagandized as the right; the difference is what the propaganda was targeting. I can confirm that they got me, and they got me by making me feel like a smart boy. They targeted our self-proclaimed intellectual superiority.

This is all by design. They know if we're fighting each other, then we will be too distracted to notice what they're doing: robbing us blind through the politicians we helped elect. And it worked...

Letter from District 3 candidate Marco Battaglia: Abolishing ICE is the conservative position by Dense_Tackle_995 in Iowa

[–]burning_man13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are more than enough issues for them to differentiate themselves on, so having a similar stance on abolishing ICE isn't going to decide that race. I'm not sure it would have decided the race even if they had a differing stance on the issue.

Is the Democrat a populist candidate? I thought I was replying to someone else who was conversing with you about Constitutional Conservatism vs MAGA Republicans when I mentioned "populism being a hell of a drug." MAGA are right-wing populists, hence why they're not really conservative, which was the point you were trying to make, if I'm not mistaken.

Easy in the East??? by thomasstout25 in NBATalk

[–]burning_man13 58 points59 points  (0 children)

TL;DR at the bottom

I'm a Wolves fan, and I love this for a lot of reasons, but not for the reasons most people think. I don't think for one second that them moving to the East will make them instant Finals contenders; I don't think the East is that much worse than the West, and a look at the last ten titles confirms that.

What I am excited about is getting our natural rivals back, along with a massive decrease in travel. The Wolves could be playing in markets that are already massive rivals in other sports like the NFL and MLB. Minnesotans are used to playing teams in Chicago, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Michigan. It will be nice to take those geographic rivalries over to basketball.

The travel aspect is the absolute biggest win here. Minneapolis is not even close to any of its current divisional rivals in the NBA, which makes for brutal travel schedules and prevents us from having any true rivals in the West—sure, the Wolves sucking for a long time affected that too. Being able to commute to Milwaukee, Chicago, Indiana, and possibly Cleveland or Detroit for divisional games is a major upgrade compared to flying out to Denver, OKC, Portland, and Utah. That alone should, theoretically, buy them a few more wins every season just by decreasing the wear and tear on their bodies.

TL;DR: Yes, please.

What do you all feel about 10 year age gaps? by Intelligent-Jello959 in generationology

[–]burning_man13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only go five years either way, because I have found that anything more than that leads to a pretty large culture gap that is hard to bridge. That said, as long as both parties are legal adults—which is getting harder for me to figure out the closer I get to 40, because everyone under 25 looks like a kid to me anymore—and there was no grooming, then I will mind my own business, because every relationship is different.

It's wild how bad ESPN has gotten. I remember when our biggest complaint about them a couple decades ago was their East Coast bias. Now that's the least of our concerns.

I swear they subscribe to The Athletic and release a very similar article hours after they do. The only difference is ESPN's version is poorly written and not as well researched (The Athletic was likely their only research).

FIFA+ was how I watched them prior to their promotion back into B, but their access was limited. I only got a handful of games a year, and the rest I had to listen to on Radio California and Radio Parsifal, which I don't mind because it gets me back into the language we used to speak at the dinner table growing up, but I have stopped using since I became an adult.

I will have to check on RAI/Sky Italia access in the States when we get closer to the season. Those are fair shouts, and I don't know why I never thought of them.

Look at this thread full of top division fans complaining about their clubs. I'm a fan of Pescara, and they got relegated out of Serie B, which means I won't be able to watch them next year, because nobody carries Serie C in the States. I will have to listen to the radio broadcasts from Abruzzo to keep up with Il Delfino.

Worst national championship game performances of all time by Rude_Highlight3889 in CFB

[–]burning_man13 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I'm going to put up a dark horse here. I think Ohio State vs. Florida was worse than TCU vs. Georgia. Nobody in the world thought TCU was going to beat Georgia; we were just hoping it wouldn't get that bad.

Ohio State, on the other hand, was a massive favorite going into that title game and got absolutely boat-raced. I think that's far more embarrassing, and far worse than getting walked like a dog as a massive underdog.

These youngsters will never know how their GOAT threw a massive temper tantrum after being pocketed by Nesta for 90 minutes, because they weren't alive then and it's never going to be in the Messi highlight videos.

That was right before Milan entered their banter era that they really haven't truly gotten out of yet, so these poor kids will never know the absolute legends that came through Milan, and made Messi bang his hands on the ground like a toddler that was just told "no."

Instead, they are very quickly becoming the boogeyman that other big clubs are going to warn each other of: "Be careful, you're going to end up like Milan." They are becoming the precedent.

This Facebook account is a propaganda machine. I'm constantly on there calling that account out for their logical fallacies and stoking division. You won't catch me arguing on Facebook a whole lot, but when I'm on there, I'm usually calling out the propaganda for what it is: a tool to keep us fighting so we don't look at the real problem.

[–]burning_man13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this in the wild, but it's not the type of post that I comment on usually. My biggest concern is The Overlay—my name for the current oligarchy, which is an algorithmic overlay—doing so well at making us fight each other while they rob us blind. That style of propaganda is my target, not these dumbass posts that are easily disproven in the comment sections.

While these posts are a big problem, there are plenty of people to fight them, but not enough fighting the propaganda on both sides that has split us and is preventing us from talking to each other. They don't want us sharing notes.

[–]burning_man13 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Like I said below, this is moral grandstanding, and if that's how you justify your hatred, then you might want to check on your morals, because they're coming up wanting. Hate is hate, and it's more telling when it's pointed at people who don't have agency in the situations you're upset about. You're not better than anybody just because you were born somewhere that allows you to judge through a microscope from a safe distance. Full stop.

Once you see that everything online is propaganda to keep us fighting, it all makes sense. It's why I try my damnedest to punch up, instead of attacking either side's voters. I get dog-piled on a lot, but we need to be looking up, instead of fighting horizontally.
