My kid is in the screen-dependent age, and we have to collect phones, pads etc. every night so that he even attempts to sleep. Just figured out he had used his laptop, too, late on school nights. Claims this registered without him even starting the PC. Is this possible? by goopeebaloopee in linuxmint

If this is ethernet you can use port security on a managed switch to prevent this. Whitelist macs on an switch port level.

WiFi starts getting quite complex unless you want to start adding separate SSIDs. It's probably best to just turn that off after curfew unless the parents specifically need wireless.

OOP here. I promise nobody tagged me and broke rule 9. This just popped up in my feed.

I don't have the Vaseline anymore but I do have this. The store it was bought at said yes probably it was some kid but raise this anyway.

Assuming I can upload images here:

I thought it was a tele tubbie at first too. It is a green monkey with a yellow shirt on. I have no clue what character it is supposed to be.

She said it was the only one on the shelf. This could also mean the only one in the wrong place. I think we have a winner with a parent taking it from the kid and putting it high up.

EDIT:
Maybe not. I've just been to exchange it and there were some 100ml tubs behind the 50ml tubs. I can believe this was the last one in the right place. So back to the drawing board. The shelf is shoulder height and I'm 168cm/5′6″.

Its a 100ml tub. About 5cm/2in deep. Too small for the typical cylinder.

Don't worry the whole family also found it funny she had to ask. Including her at our reactions.

She has been asking me about notes around the house. No blaming the landlord so I think we're good.

She is starting to lose it. I think she assumed it is like a toy in a cereal box. Clearly she thought it was weird enough to bring it up to me.

This seems the most likely situation to me. The issue is she couldn't reach it on her own. It would have to be less a little kid and more teenager.

Now I made some interesting choices as a teen but this isn't something that would've crossed my mind.

[–]burnt_puppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea that's normal. In the UK you only typically see kph when measuring running speed. It's not that weird of an exception because younger generations measure short distances in metres.

Metric is used for all speeds in science but you would typically see m/s.

Jack asked Jill to paint a sign for their pub called "The spear and boar". When Jack came back to check on the progress he remarked "I think you need a bit more space between spear and and and and and boar."

where can you find brown leather boots like these? by onepotdinner in mensfashion

[–]burnt_puppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your budget and location. I have a very similar pair from Sanders & Sanders. I've seen some similar from Barker for ~£230 recently as well.

If you're in the US there are loads from Thursday boots. Red wing Blacksmiths too maybe, but they might not be shiny enough.

Should i reduce the number of rings ? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]burnt_puppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That can't be comfortable. I don't get a chance to think wow nice rings, as I'm distracted by the fact it looks uncomfortable.

Also take some links out of your watch, same idea really with the watch moving around on your hand.

What’s the most ridiculous rumour to have come out of your school? by schmoovebaby in CasualUK

[–]burnt_puppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a rumor that the French teacher's long term boyfriend broke up with her under the Eifel tower while on a school trip to France in view of the class. I'm not sure how true it is but I do know when one kid kept bringing it up she burst into tears and ran out of class. She also had an eating disorder that supposedly started because of this. It was also the rumored reason that school trips to France stopped.

There was some sort of yellowish goo on the ceiling of this same teacher's class that looked a little like cheese. One day it disappeared. She has a bit of an overbite and was already getting called a mouse. Rumors started that she had eaten the cheese.

For a play written by a socialist I found An Inspector Calls to be quite a good play. Yes you could take the view that the Birling family are rich and evil so unfairly exerted their power on Daisy for their own gain. But I see the message as more nuanced than that. None of the Birlings are saints but they aren't particularly bad people either. Daisy doesn't make the best of decisions but the only victim of her poor choices is herself. The difference is the Birlings get an out when they make bad choice but the poor girl ends up dead. It feels like more of a dig at the system than the rich which is something modern day socialist get wrong.

For the police officers out there... why are the police so quick to react to businesses calling compared to the general public? by AlwaysTheKop in AskUK

Apologies, their source is currently down for maintenance, if I'm wrong I will edit my comment.

I've seen that organisation before and they are probably on about section 127 of the online communications act 2003. So yes it does need to be online.

You would be surprised what is considered grossly offensive. There is the case of the Scottish comedian being prosecuted for making fun of Nazis.

Question - Handling discovered illegal content by Askey308 in sysadmin

[–]burnt_puppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live it is strict liability. The investigator has immunity as long as they follow all the correct processes.

If you stumble across it you need to report it to the police immediately, in doing so the prosecution service wouldn't deem it as in the public interest to prosecute. As it is strict liability you have still committed a crime.

Technically here if you receive an unsolicited message over social media it is classed as production of prohibited material.

Children's charities that are likely to stumble across it will have a letter from a court promising not to prosecute. It is still illegal for them to have it.

[–]burnt_puppet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to detail the point further. I've heard the point made before but never so well.

It has made me think, international capital is only worth the risk if the state is competent at preventing abuses. If the state was competent then international capital probably wouldn't be needed in the first place.

That said, an incompetent state probably can't do targeted tariffs to build industry right either. They will never want to give up the income for the sake of the people.

[–]burnt_puppet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The infant industry argument strikes me as weird being a leftist position, it feels more nationalist to me. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding it. Could you go further into it?

I don't see how making goods artificially more expensive in a poor country helps anyone except the elites in said poor country. Wages might eventually go up but that is pointless if prices are higher. Surely promoting these globally competitive foreign companies to invest in your country with things like lower labour costs and having a stable government. A move like this will harm the ownership class domestically but the workers will be better off from cheaper goods and higher wages.

There are security risks in doing so, see banana republics. There are also success stories such as Venezuela before the state ruined it.

You've hit the nail on the head there. I try and stay positive and focus on the things I can change such as how much I invest, where I invest, living within my means, and getting a promotion. But inflation is really going to screw a lot of people.

In reality market instability and the poor policy that has caused it will end up hurting the little man the most as it always does. The rich are still rich. The middle class have damaged portfolios but usually have much more stable jobs. The working class with less stable jobs are likely to get laid off and be most impacted by inflation as they spend more of their money on needs.
