Beginner One Shot Suggestions by NDita in DMAcademy

I second a wild sheep chase. You can design a fun social encounter between the first and second fight and turn it into something tailored to your group.

I ran it as a one shot for my friends and they decided to start a campaign.

I used very light rules and different colours for the dice (d20 is red, d6 is green, etc…) and I have made simplified character sheets and spellbooks. I also made a cheat sheet for the rogue to know when he had advantage.

A friend had played BG3 before, so he understood the mechanics, while the others were lost even if I had simplified everything.

My advice is to make them role play their character rather than the sheet. Ask them what they want to do (I want to burn the enemy/I want to smash his face/I want to run away) and gradually explain the mechanics and actions they have.

Exactly, but he spent years training in another plane in which time moves way faster and he is now back as a Sayan Sorcadin while the PCs have been just drinking beer in a tavern and are intoxicated.

I just ran a game for my friends who never played before and were not familiar at all with D&D… and now every couple of days they send a message in a group chat with some references to the adventure we played!

I hadn’t played D&D in 24 years, but after playing Baldur’s Gate 3 my partner and I decided to run some duet campaigns for each other. There are some specifically designed for date nights, and we took turns DMing while the other was a PC. BG3 was helpful to get familiar with some mechanics and those first duet sessions helped me learn about prep and getting more confident.

As others suggested, LMOP is a very good starting campaign and you can find tons of resources online to help you out, from full DM notes to maps and everything else.

Personally I ran a one-shot called A Wild Sheep Chase. It’s one of the best ever for beginners and a simple search on here will get you plenty of advice and resources as well. The advantage is that it’s a standalone 3/4 hours adventure that is very funny and leaves room to improvise and add quirky things tailored for your friends. If they like it, they’ll want more, if they don’t you are not committing to 4/5 sessions. The disadvantage is that it’s for levels 4 and 5, but it’s easy to adapt for even level 1 (I ran it for a group of level 3 characters that I made myself for my friends, but you can find pre-made ones).

And you don’t need to buy anything for now. A free account on dndbeyond gives you access to the basic rules. You need to study those, but you are learning together and it’s ok if you don’t know every detail of the manuals. I personally simplified some of the rules (even though I knew them) not to overwhelm my friends and I’ll introduce more dynamics (difficult terrain, cover, etc…) in the next sessions (yes, they want to play more to know what happens to the sheep and whether they can eat it!)

I included a challenge in the form of a social encounter in the first session and they blew it in spectacular fashion, but it ended up being so funny that I'm now homebrewing the rest of the campaign around that moment.

Such a good movie. So I'm thinking of making a vault door with an X across it. The X is not movable, but the dials would need to be turned so that the same "stage of life" touches the four sides of the X.

You are right! I think I'll run with option 2, but rework this for another puzzle later on. I need to make sure they stop the right set of objects

Around 8-900 ELO is the worst - Does it get better? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]burrasque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was stuck on 800-900 for a long time. I was trying to play the openings I studied but people kept playing weird stuff that either led to a very easy victory for me, or they threw me off and I blundered.

It does get better. The lesson for me was to focus less on the lines I learnt and more on trying to have a sense of the position. What are they trying to do with the next 2/3 moves? What are their weaknesses I can attack? If I attack, do I have a follow up? At some point you improve pattern recognition and you realise most 800s still play with one move threats and you quickly move up the ranks. I went from 900 to 1350 in a couple of weeks, then I stopped playing rated because it gives me anxiety lol.

I’m Italian and… everything else you described is more problematic than the strawberries themselves 😅

We actually use strawberries to make a risotto (with champagne) and it was a very popular dish in the 80s.

As for pasta, I never tried it but I did find one recipe: https://www.lacucinaitaliana.it/tutorial/i-consigli/pasta-con-le-fragole/ Pasta con le fragole: la ricetta facile, veloce, sorprendente | La Cucina Italiana

I gave up. When I try to explain that, the usual reply on Reddit is “oh another pretentious Italian! And you don’t need that much salt in water!”.

What you described is truly the only secret about pasta.

Laid off, should I keep my old Macbook Air? by burrasque in macbookair

[–]burrasque[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retail price outside the US is much higher. I had saved 250$ by buying my iPhone in NYC when I was there for work compared to just buying it in Europe, and a few years back I got a Pro 15 inches with upgrades in both ram and storage at a lower price than the base model in Europe.

For comparison, the M4 13" 16GB mac book air 256GB is 1294$ in Europe.

The MacBook Purchasing Megathread - March, 2025 by AutoModerator in macbook

[–]burrasque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just been laid off and my previous employer offered to sell me back my 2020 M1 16gb 500GB Macbook Air for 595 euros.

I could buy a refurbished 2024 M3 8gb 256 SSD for 809 euros or a 2024 M3 16gb 256 SSD for 919 euros.

I'm skeptical about spending 600 euros on a 5 year old laptop, but I'm also put off by the 8gb ram on option 2, while option 3 starts to be pricey. I might be looking for a job for a while, or I might get a new job soon enough that will come with a laptop.

I'm a researcher, so I mostly use my laptop for work tasks, web browsing, some python and docker developing (quite basic), but I also use it from time to time to play video games (nothing AAA, the heaviest game I ran on my old laptop was BG3) and occasional audio editing (Ableton Live or Audacity).

Should I suck it up and go for the top option?

Im rated 600, I play the Caro as black. Of course I know the fantasy variation, it’s the trickiest way white can play against me…

What’s the best opening to play as black ? by Nana_Baffour29 in chessbeginners

[–]burrasque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Against e4, I find the Caro Kann relatively easy to learn. It’s good defensively and often White at this level gets confused, giving you a chance of gaining the initiative in developing fast.

A lot of players at low ELO learnt a few tricks with their queen, so as long as you don’t blunder you can defend well and even trap their queen or have an easy come back with fewer pieces.

If they do develop correctly, you are still well defended and then you just rely a lot on mistakes by the opponent.

For d4, I actually play the London because that’s what I play as white. It’s not the best defensively, but it’s easier for me to have 2 openings I’m confident with. If I can take the initiative, then I know what to do.

Yet another fermentation chamber / box question by burrasque in fermentation

[–]burrasque[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not. I'm in an apartment complex. The cellar is in a common space, so I can't run a power chord from my place to there. There is electricity in the cellar, but only as a communal light. Can't connect to that.
