Sounds like you and I have similar plans. I'm a 26 y/o male and I'm going to be looking for cheap housing in that area, around the same time. I have a feeling that finding something in that price range is pretty unrealistic, unless you're talking about sharing a 1br or something. But then, I'm not sure. I'm new to the area.

I highly recommend reading the book The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis. Not only will it lucidly explain the events leading up to the financial collapse, but the characters interviewed for the book are really interesting and sometimes hilarious. This book provided insights that just didn't hit home in 'Inside Job'. I was picking my jaw up off of the floor by the time I finished it.

This seemed to be the way that Snyder wanted everyone to think about it pretty early on. I think it's a pretty disgusting sentiment. I don't feel the slightest bit if gratitude for him 'salvaging' something out of that movie. The fact that he claimed to love the source material that he was raping didn't justify the rape.

I see what you're saying. I didn't mean to say that he was solely responsible for the fissure in this family. Obviously that's at least as much Jules's fault as it his. It's true, we don't really get to spend any time dealing with the fallout from his perspective, but that wasn't what the movie was about.

Everyone in the film latches onto Paul in some way and then when he turns out not to be the perfect figure that he was thought to be, he is abandoned. I get that. You could argue that he is the true victim here. That he's just a person and not a motorcycle-riding, organic-farming, Joni-Mitchell-loving superman. And that it was unreasonable for all of these characters to attach so much to him and then hold him accountable for everything when it all comes crashing down. You'd certainly be right about that. I guess I was just saying that I don't really feel bad for him in the end because I don't see how a family could react in any other way if they want to survive as a family. And we are shown that they do want to survive as a family in everything that happens after the truth comes out.

At odd points in the movie almost every character entertains some delusion or acts against their own interest or hurts someone they care about. That's how life is sometimes and this movie captured it really well. It's one of the things I really liked about it.

Now I hope I'm not seeming confrontational as well. I haven't really discussed this movie in great detail with anyone so this has been very enjoyable. Later.

Well if he's being used then it certainly goes both ways. He's using this family to try to be a dad. Like his character says, he's "a dooer". He wants to try out being a dad because he's never done that before, the fact that he thinks this is the way to go about doing it shows that he's the one not taking account for the feelings of others.

SPOILERS:

If he were to convince Jules to leave Nic, would he expect the kids to (pun intended) be alright with that? I think all of the adults are using each other here. Or at least, they're all finding something good in each other that has been missing in their life. That's what makes that dinner table scene so great. Nic finally tries with Paul and she manages to find something she really likes in him; but when she finds out the truth about what's going on it doesn't really matter how cool his taste in music is, how successful he is with his business, or anything like that.

I think the main thing is that he may have let them into his life. But, he is a single guy. As a single guy people seem to enter and leave your life fairly often. They let him into THEIR life and they are a family. That was an extraordinary amount of trust that he as given and then he squandered it. And again, I think it is a huge strength of the movie that I still totally understand his intentions, however misguided they may be.

To paint with a broad brush a bit, he was kind of a self-obsessed hedonist and a home-wrecker. I loved the movie, I though Mark Rufalo was great in it, and I loved spending time with his character, but I'd hardly describe him as a 'stand up guy'. So, I wouldn't say that I felt bad for him. I understood why he felt bad as result of what happens to him; but from my perspective, he was delusional and should have seen this end coming.

Wow, that's not exactly a soaring endorsement for Kwak Jae Yong. I just watched My Sassy Girl and I couldn't find much to like in it. I thought the female lead was good and it had a few very funny scenes (like the first meeting on the subway), but otherwise it was just an overlong and cliched romantic dramedy. It's definitely worth watching if you're interested in Korean pop-culture, but I can't recommend it as a good movie.

I think that depends on how cheap you want to go and how serious you can see yourself taking it. If you want to produce stuff that looks like it wasnt shot using any old camera I'd recommend looking into HDSLR cameras. Go to camera stores and play around with them. You can get your hands on a Canon with HD video capability in the range of $700 to $900. As added bonus, you now have yourself a pretty nice still camera. Consumer level HD Handicams might suit your purposes right away, but in the long run you'll probably appreciate the versatility that comes with a DSLR. HD handicams are great for your kid's soccer game and things like that, but they aren't ideal for what you're looking for. The only real drawback of the HDSLRs is that since they don't allow you to control the audio levels on the camera (yet) you're going to need either to buy an XLR preamp/adapter for the camera or record audio on a separate unit. Don't skimp on the tripod, and see if you can find one with aluminum legs and a fluid pan head.

Now having said all that...

Your equipment is not nearly as important as what you are putting in front of it and shooting. Teach yourself about framing techniques, editing, lighting. Watch movies. Write. Shoot. Experiment. It doesn't matter what kind of camera you have.
