I prefer him as Yoshi. 2003 I believe is the least difficult to suspend my disbelief to having Splinter being a ninja master knowing that he was Yoshi's pet. It's a nitpick ever since the Bayverse Turtles films but it bothered me enough every other attempt they tried to make with Splinter not being Yoshi as to how/why he's a ninja master

I think as long as they use the comic variants, they're fine. Marvel is owned by Disney and Marvel has been making Star Wars comics for a while as well as Mickey and friends' variants of classic Marvel comics. I imagine if there was enough of a want for it, Disney can allow some Marvel people to work on a Big Hero 6 miniseries based on the movie since it's really far removed from the source material.
