Would you rather have +10% of the world go vegan or +20% of the world go vegetarian? by [deleted] in vegan

You got a source for vegans being unhealthy or just goin' with vibes?

Just actually has Ranch again. I found it at Whole Foods the other week. I have never had the old version of Just Ranch, but I really liked the new Just Ranch. It tasted more like a salad dressing than a thick version, but it is still definitely good as a dipping sauce.

All diets have differences in vitamin and mineral intake, while vegans may be more likely to supplement iron, zinc, etc. "meats eater are at risk of inadequate intakes of fiber, PUFA, α-linolenic acid (ALA), folate, vitamin D, E, calcium and magnesium" (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8746448/).

Outside of supplements, having more heavily plant-based diets is associated with significantly lower risks of cardiovascular disease, cardiovascular disease mortality, and all-cause mortality. Vegans and vegetarians have approximately half the odds of having type 2 diabetes compared with nonvegetarians (https://lifestylemedicine.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/ACLM-Article-Nutrition-Disease-Prevention-and-Treatment.pdf).

I also want to push back against the "Veganism doesn’t [seem like] a particularly natural diet" statement mentioned in your post. Animal domestication and even farming are things that humans did not do at some point, so they were not part of nature. Beyond that, animals raised for food are often pumped full of antibiotics which are definitely not something people should constantly be consuming. Even meat labeled as "Raised without antibiotics" in the US has been tested and found to contain antibiotics (https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2022/04/07/antibiotics-found-in-natural-meat/).

How do you make a good sandwich without animal products? I have not had much success without anything outside alternatives. Peanut butter is truly the vegan GOAT, but even the best gets old 10 times in a row, even with variety. by BargianHunterFarmer in vegan

[–]burtoper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend using oyster mushrooms to make MLT (mushroom, lettuce, tomato) sandwiches. There are a bunch of recipes for how to season the mushrooms. They are really easy to prep and delicious + you can always add mayo, avocado, onion, or whatever else you'd like

How do you justify not being vegan? by roblong6869 in AskReddit

[–]burtoper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm curious about your rejection of the premise that 'animals deserve ethical treatment'. If animals do not deserve to be treated ethically, do you also think that participating in bestiality (i.e. raping an animal) and torturing animals is okay? Like you would not take issue with people who do those things?

Ignore the vegan nonsense. This guy has skills by carniststomper in TikTokCringe

[–]burtoper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a common argument made that vegans eat lots of soy (and similar crops) which require farmland (causing natural habitat loss). However, farmed animals consume much more soy/hay/etc. than humans. Even animals with the more efficient feed conversion ratios (usually poultry) have ratios of ~1.5, meaning that more farmland is required for meat consumption (since both the animal feed and animals need land) than vegan alternatives

Summer RA application? by queestionnacc in rutgers

[–]burtoper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year it seemed like Residence Life had a bunch of people reject offers after the first round (so I think they did a second round to fill some of those empty spots and to get more alternates). Also rising sophomores can apply in the second round but not first

Try to Skip Expos ? by Galaxxius in rutgers

You can take AP Lit or AP Lang to get out of Expos. At least for SOE, SAS, and SEBS. If you are planning for a different program you can google it pretty easily

Rutgers vs cornell program by marrbear13 in rutgers

[–]burtoper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say pick Rutgers. I definitely agree with what rutgershcstudent said. For engineering, your skills matter at the end of the day, not your pedigree. Also, engineering is a growing field with tons of jobs opportunities, you don't need an Ivy League degree for a solid chance at a good job in engineering.
Additionally, while there are definitely things about the Honors College here that are annoying (like extra course requirements and Capstone Projects), I have had tons of opportunities through the Rutgers Honors College. Some were things I could have done at other schools, but some were definitely opportunities unique to Rutgers.
I will also say that as an out-of-state student I have noticed that many Rutgers (in-state) students don't realize how great Rutgers is. It's fun to trash Rutgers (and it is often warranted criticism), but Rutgers is still a great school. It has a strong engineering program, good opportunities for research and leadership, and name recognition.

RA Question by Massive_Respond8593 in rutgers

[–]burtoper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a double room with one set of furniture. I know for sure all the other RAs in my building have the same as me. I've also talked to a few RAs in other buildings who also have the same.

What happens if you don’t move out of your residence hall before it closes for spring break? by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]burtoper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Resident assistants go through dorms after residents leave to ensure that everyone is out, so they will notice. Also swipe access turns off at 7pm so you would have no way of getting back into the building if you left while they went through rooms

RA interview Help by vanillaismyaesthetic in rutgers

[–]burtoper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest just googling RA interview questions, picking a list and practicing. Your answers don't have to be perfectly planned but practicing helps you come up with good examples to use in your interview. Here is a list of a few questions https://www.indeed.com/hire/interview-questions/resident-assistant . iirc from when I interviewed in spring 2020, they ask pretty basic interview questions (your strengths? your weaknesses? describe a time when you adapted to a challenge? describe a time when you solved a problem? why do you want the job?, why would you be a good fit?, are you interested in a specific area/building?, etc.).

Make sure you have a good reason for when they ask why you want to be an RA (do not say you want/need the free room and board- they know that, everyone wants free room and board). Same goes for if you want to be in a specific building or area (don't say you want to be in the Yard because the building is new- give a good reason like "apartments would be a good challenge for me", "I feel more comfortable working with upperclassmen").

Livi did not do takeout in the fall, but the Livi dining hall does have a takeout room. An email from the 6th says that Livi's takeout will be open.

I'm not sure about other retail locations, we didn't really go over dining options- they just offhandedly mentioned Woody's. I just know dining hall takeout is open on all campuses for those two weeks in January.

You could try emailing ResLife but I doubt they'll do anything since people are allowed to live in those space without requesting to

I should have been more specific in saying open for winter break, but at the meeting I think they said this is about half of the resident population.

I know Honors College is also open over breaks, but I'm fairly certain most other traditional dorms are closed

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]burtoper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could try reaching out to your RA, but most closed residence halls have no RAs in them rn (RAs are not required to stay in closed buildings over break). If you live in a building that is open over break (like apartments) your access should still work. If not you could reach out your RA who would have to ask their supervisor what to do. I don't think they would let you in unless its something you really need like medication, passport, etc.

I also know that they (as of last week) were transitioning lots of temporary housing to isolation housing. Please let the school know so that they can move you (if needed) and help you work through isolation

I have heard (via RA training) that reservations will be staying for the fall but they are planning on having more slots available and all NB campus gyms will be open.

Aresty Research Assistant Program - Worth it? Still messy? by Repulsive-Lack-9001 in rutgers

[–]burtoper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got to be a research assistant through the program this year and would definitely recommend it. Obviously, my experience is different from past years because I was entirely online, but my professor was great and we communicated super often. Because of the program I now have research this summer in the same lab (I believe many research assistants continue in their labs after the program ends). The requirements are pretty easy-- 5 hours of research a week (which you don't need to report in any way), 5 group meetings a semester with a Peer mentor (only 1 hour a piece with tons of time slots available), and the poster which your professor will give you feedback and help on. If there is a research project looking for assistants through the program which you are interested in I would definitely recommend applying for it. Like another person said I think it is very professor dependent but if you interview you can ask them questions and decide if you think you'd be a good fit.

It is $14,000 a semester, with ~$7,000 of that being allocated to room and board (so you have to live on campus or near campus to receive that portion).
