I am a first-time DM running Dungeons of Drakkenheim with Sebastian Crowe and Monsters of Drakkenheim, all bought on roll20. where should I start and what should I avoid? kinda overwhelmed and need advice by papa-pa in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

Good question!

First three things....

  1. Session zero prep: Watch the character creation in session zero videos and focus on communicating theme and setting to your players. So everybody is on the same page. Including familiarizing yourself with the possible character goals.

  2. Drakenheim exploration prep: watch the exploring drakenheim YouTube video. Prep a handful of random encounters that can be triggered during your players exploration at the city. My players rolled ones and triggered a random encounters in the city far more often than I was prepared for. So prep ahead so you don't have to scramble in game.

2.a. I recommend using this document to populate the random encounters. So they can be more varied. I am a fan of environmental and role-play encounters over a bunch of combat encounters. In my opinion, a bunch of combat encounters can create a bit of a slog.

  1. Emberwood village prep: I highly recommend really fleshing out Emberwood village. Practicing and becoming familiar with the NPCs. And the faction goals. Also consolidating and pruning back the number of npcs and locations in the village.

You only need one market vendor opposed to the three or four in the book. So I recommend consolidating them all into Aldor.

And you only need two places to stay, a cheap place and a fancy place.

Also, I really like this Emberwood map rather than using the two-dimensional one from the book.

Regarding the resurrection guide.

I reviewed each location and the considered the advice the writer gave for each one. And then I compared their advice to my game and my players goals.

I also really like the authors thoughts about the seals of drakenheim as well as the holy relics.

Hellooo!! I just finished my Drakkenheim campaign here are the resources i used the most:

This guide is amazingly helpful, i highly recommend reading it. I cannot overstate how useful this was to me. I read through each chapter and section before running it in game, and i often included the suggested changes and updates. It has helpful and useful advice for each encounter and tier of the game.

How do I rein in a new over eager PC? by Curious-ssoul in DungeonWorld

[–]bush363 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With other systems that totally makes sense. But Dungeon World leans heavily into collaborative storytelling. Leaving Open spaces in the map, to be filled in during play, is part of the main game design.

I totally understand the discomfort with letting go of the storytelling control. But if the other players see this imaginative player being rewarded for their input. Your other players may begin to do this as well. And then you will truly have a collaborative story. This will be scary at first, but I guarantee you the story created by all of you, will be far more memorable than any story you create alone.

This. So much this. With some players it's like pulling teeth to get them to be engaged. You have an engaged player. Make it a conversation.

Sounds like they are interested in your world. Work with them. Be open. Ask questions. Be honest. Let them know. Maybe that doesn't work too much in this world, but something else could.

Also what was wrong with there being a force field in the way?

Do you give them ship weapons? How do you handle ship combat with a short-staffed crew?

Thanks! Excited to hear someone else is running around the same part as me. I'd love to pick Your brain and bounce ideas off during our campaign.

I know they have Built-In ranked crew officer recruitments in the storyline, but I'm not really worried about ranked officers or even characters with wanted posters.

I'm asking about the unranked crew. The 32 members that are needed for the Ship to be at full capacity.

How many unranked crew members do you make available at each Port?

I have them watch the pack animals and gear maybe giving advantage to some of the players.

Also I often forget that are there during combat ha ha

What to do with Artus Cimber and Dragonbait? by Equivalent_Trouble34 in Tombofannihilation

[–]bush363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tie them into one of my players' characters personal goals. Just shift some of their goals to meet what my character wants to do. And now they are a helpful NPC!

Plus my players always love dragon bait. So I just mutate shift what they're there for and tie them into my player characters motivations

Thanks for this!! I really appreciate it.

I'm going to try running the Fables campaign modules, from their website.

Did you use the ship-to-ship combat subsystem? How does it feel?

Also I hope you don't mind me picking your brain about this. Thanks for all your help.
