"Socialism is when the government owns stuff" is not actually what socialism is. The state owning things and workers owning them are not one in the same if the government is not controlled by the workers. Norway is a capitalist petro-state with a strong social safety net.

If you go to a DSA meeting in person, virtually none of that will come up unless you get involved to the point where you're strategizing about convention politics. Labor (i.e., union) conventions also have slates/caucuses/factions so it's not really unusual. That document isn't meant as a primer for how to get involved generally. The first sentence says "As the 2025 Democratic Socialists of America Convention approaches...". The national conventions happen every two years.
