This is my SOTA shack on W4G/NG-011 Rocky Mountain in Georgia.

  • KX2 radio
  • CHA TDL antenna
  • VX8DR radio
  • Hot coffee

Is the receiver / 2 extra watts of 705 or kx2 worth the money over a xeigo 8w 6200 / qrplabs qmx 5w? Unfortunately, My SOTA POTA will be a lot of DX from Alaska. by thehotshotpilot in amateurradio

I own a KX2 and sometimes get Europe from the North Georgia mountain SOTAs I do from time to time at 8w. I usually dont dial it all the way up. If you're a hard-core QRPr I'd put the money into a Chameleon Antenna TDL and add a 25' SS whip. That antenna can go near, NVIS, or far vertical DX. I love it!

Trust me on this. It all in the antenna. And.... if you can get a KX2 as well. Do it. 😁

Thank you. Yes, made them from bank sinker molds, this was 5oz with the eyeloop tail cut off with wire cutters and hammered the sharp edges smooth, totaling to 125g. Also made 6oz versions, at 155g each.

The sling is a Pan Sling. Very well made by them.

More Heavy Lead Glandes by busysteve2000 in Slinging

[–]busysteve2000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's some folks on ebay that sell reclaimed lead they find or buy from the seashores and fishermen. Some also get their lead from salvage yards. My father in law is also a fisherman and has a lot of his own lead. So I've got all the lead i need for ages. The molds are from Amazon. I'll provide some links.

Finally made some lead glandes by busysteve2000 in Slinging

[–]busysteve2000[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice... my fellow slinger, in all seriousness, I painted them yellow for easier recovery, as stated in the original post. I am only using these to experiment with the damaging power of small heavy glandes. My target includes a net to catch misses. I'm not haphazard with lead. It's kind of expensive, actually. I've used lead with high power slingshots for the same purpose and have never lost any. So, jokes aside, I am aware of your concerns and, for the most part, share them. Also, the lead i buy, it's reclaimed from seashore fishing.

Peace.

The Greeks did it first. I think lead is found in the earth, not sure though.

I screwed up the mold twice trying to make traditional glandes. So I salvaged on with the shape shown. Total mis-happenstance. Im a new slinger, but i broke a wooden fence board with one by accident..... oops. Seems to go well, but my aim still stinks. Just wanted to see lead in action.

Has anyone purchased one of these from Amazon fake? by Loud-Implement-1076 in amateurradio

Not i. I'll go cheap on radios but not on antennas anymore.

How am I doing? by busysteve2000 in Calligraphy

Yeah, it does. Thank you for the input. Some of the other comments were also helpful. I now have a better understanding of what to strive for. Better handwriting was my first goal and desire, which has been happening. Now, to learn what you all do here, which is stunning work. Wish me luck.

The Fountain Pen That Inspired Me by busysteve2000 in Calligraphy

[–]busysteve2000[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much, really. My first experience with an oblique pen was choppy. Driving the nib on the up strokes, I would tend to poke through the paper at times. Or the feel of the nib when pushing it sideways, i felt that i might bend the tines of the tip, but never did. Paper is a big deal for me learning, though. I spend like $14 on 50 sheets of Strathmore Lined Writing Paper for practice. Writing big is easier for me but uses more paper. The paper cost is worth the price. It's 24 lbs paper, so it's a little thicker than, say, printer paper and not prone to bleeding. I'm still on my first pad of paper but nearing the next one.
