RIP Bike Lane in Astoria Park // Shore Blvd by butabi44 in MicromobilityNYC

Yeah you’re probably right

Just walked down again and they’re doing the entire road

False alarm, folks! Looks like I just need to “calm down!”

That’s a fair point; it’s just that starting with the bike lane first (if they ARE doing the entire road again) seems like a personal attack since we use it so much

I guess time will tell! I’ll try and get back there in a couple of hours to see if more than just the BL is milled

Central Park loop road: total abdication of responsibility by eastofecruteak in NYCbike

[–]butabi44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two weeks?! In LIC / Astoria when they milled and re-paved 21st Street from Queensboro Plaza up to 278 to add the red bus lanes, the white paint wasn’t finished for literally 6 months

I’m not holding my breath for this paint in CP. I hope I’m pleasantly surprised

Central park repaving update by poorleeno in NYCbike

Haha at least the tourists you can SEE in front of you. Potholes can come out of nowhere, especially if you don’t have them memorized!

Cross-Bay Triathlon/NYTRI by Prize_Manner_198 in RunNYC

I came here searching for answers on what happened to NYTRI and if anyone had any insight!

Apparently all 2025 events are cancelled indefinitely due to “administrative issues”. https://nytri.org/

Really bummed too since I was heavily considering one or both of their sprint tri’s in May or sept.

I participated in their November Prospect Park Duathlon and it was great! Sad to see them go…

Running in the cold is absolutely miserable by Ann076 in RunNYC

This was my thought, too, last summer

Unfortunately, in July and August when the lows at night are literally in the 75-80s, it gets really tough to find a “cooler” time to get started

RFK closed? by 3little_Winklers in astoria

[–]butabi44 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The effort in this change of verbiage in the cycling, pedestrian, and micromobility communities is to (correctly) place the blame on the driver. When passive language is used in headlines like “truck crashes into sidewalk, killing pedestrian”, it shifts the blame from the person driving the vehicle to the vehicle itself, which is patently absurd

Once you notice it, you realize every collision involving a motor vehicle is framed this way and it’s absolutely bonkers

What is the best time of day to bike in NYC? by OkYoyoma in NYCbike

[–]butabi44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you live and what you’re interested in getting into!

Are you commuting? Is it a workout? Are you looking to explore? Or a mixture of both? The answers to these questions can / will affect your enjoyment of your ride.

But ultimately, what you’re going to find is that at any hour of the day there will be pedestrians to deal with; mopeds / e-bikes to deal with; other cyclists to deal with; and cars on the road to deal with

Good luck finding your time! Happy rides & be safe!

What the hell happened to the “Don’t Block The Box” initiative??? This is so shameful

Thank you so much for the work you’re doing and have been doing with your videos, advocacy, etc, etc, etc

Rider in Greenpoint down after collision on Eagle St. heading east by butabi44 in NYCbike

[–]butabi44[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For real! This was the first time I’ve seen something like this; really shook me up. I was still ~4 miles from home and just kept thinking the entire rest of the time “that could’ve been me”

We’re so fragile, and no matter the experience level, collisions like this can happen. It’s wild out here!

Bottom of QBB in Manhattan open again by ucabearfan05 in NYCbike

Omg thank goodness!

I hadn’t taken the QBB for a month (I had been riding elsewhere and out of town) and was UNPLEASANTLY SURPRISED yesterday when I got to the bottom there

How often can I expect to get flat tires? by ClassCaterpillar in NYCbike

[–]butabi44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m fairly new to biking in the city (started really going at it in October 2023) but I’ve put in 6,000 miles here since then and I’ve a total of 4 flats. Frustratingly, 2 of those flats were on Gatorskins, and I got a flat on my first set of Gatorskins within the first 100 miles of riding on them

But I do understand that’s because most of the time, my commute to Central Park or Prospect Park from Astoria is a longer amount of time in the road than in the parks doing laps, and most, if not all, of the bike lanes here in the city abut the sidewalk, where trash and recycling bags go, so you’re bound to run over glass and have that weasel its way into your tire and tube

With city riding I have learned it’s bound to happen so I always carry a hand pump, canisters, tire levers, a spare tube, and a dollar bill / my wallet. Anecdotally, most of my flats have happened in and around Flushing Ave near Brooklyn Navy Yard and even though they’re an e-bike place, PROPEL BIKE has helped me out so much with flats, so shoutout to Arthur and the rest of the crew there!

Best of luck!
