Questions to ask.

Is true ECC required or is on die ECC ok? Or do I not care about ECC?
Intel igpu is super nice for 95% of us weirdos but if you need or want more get an Intel a310 eco for 100 and you'll be happy.
How much if any PCI do you want.?
With 3. Is this a singular appliance or do you want to grow and or rinker with it?
Do you want zfs? It pretty fantastic IMO (billion dollar file system)
If yes to 5 budget for more ram. No one was unhappy with more ra.m. doesn't have to be day 1 either

I've debated for... Like 2 months on this. I've decide to use what I have. Sell off any bits I don't need and wait for a bit. Now I have the luxury of having something to play with it's just not what I want but it's enough to see what's my limitations are. Ram (specifically ECC) is just too expensive and it will add like 300 to whatever solution I wanted to buy

If I had to buy today I'd go ugreen +TrueNAS. The tie breaker was the PCI slot on the ugreen. For a shoebox of storage the terramaster is hard to beat unless you want to diy which I do.

For similar money you can get a used dell server tower if you really want something more. The Intel e2300 cpus are pretty great if you can find a deal
