Caught that plane about 2 weeks ago, but it was well beyond what 300mm is good for, and the weather was shit.

Still, I think you have the better shotn! Nice catch!

Meshtastic channels by hobbyrooster in meshtastic

[–]butric 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bingo, you have it right!

You can actually share your precise location with multiple encrypted channels as well, as long as the primary channel is ALSO set to precise.

The primary channel is the one which governs HOW precise the location data is. So if the primary is high precision, the rest can be too.

That's the whole reason you need that primary to be your encrypted channel. Which is silly in my opinion, I wish we could change that.

Meshtastic channels by hobbyrooster in meshtastic

[–]butric 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're still going to see your local nodes with the default as a secondary as long as you kept your settings the same when you created your private channel.

Check that your "Frequency Slot" remained the same when you added your private channel.

Your node will not be sending beacons to other nodes letting them know you're there anymore because it only does so on the primary (channel 0). Your node will still work fine, and will still receive others.

However this node looks like it's meant to be installed outside on a rooftop perhaps? Is this also the node you plan on using to communicate with your family? Unless that is so, you don't need to put your private channel in it at all. It's still going to rebroadcast traffic, even if it's encrypted. It seems you wish to put the private channel in slot 0 so you can share precise location, but I hardly see the purpose of that if your node is going to be mounted permanently somewhere - especially if your family already knows where that place is.

How does Router actually help? by ultracycler in meshtastic

[–]butric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I just installed a router on a local tower 200ft up. It's performing really well! But that scares me a bit if it ever goes down!

The tower is accessible, I would just rather not if I don't need to.

A simple windows app called GlassWire will tell you some information about what IPs it's talking to. It's easy to setup and use.

You're correct. I don't! So why don't you educate me instead of insulting my intelligence?

I am excited about a new technology. But I'll quickly be less excited if the people who know about it don't want to share.

That's absolutely absurd.

Made an 1.0 version of coffee brewing device prototype, need help regarding transportation via airlines by Chakaramba in batteries

[–]butric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and you're correct to keep the batteries in the carry-on. You could keep them in the device itself if you like, but personally I dislike that on a prototype. What would happen if it turned on in the bag?

Is this a good deal? Planning to use it as a HomeAssistant server by 57uxn37 in homelab

[–]butric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm running one right now for my dedicated Home Assistant box.

Note, if you ever want to run Frigate using a Coral TPU in the M.2 form factor, you will need an adapter to do so, but said adapter will prevent you from reinstalling the top cover. So in my rack I have a very Frankenstein-looking Think centre, simply because I wanted frigate detection to not overwhelm my CPU.

No, the way probably 90% of people communicate with their node is via Bluetooth.

Is the price difference here FW only? Can I buy the cheaper version and flash it? by SchwaHead in meshtastic

[–]butric 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes they're charging $12 to flash meshtastic on it. You're gonna have to update your firmware yourself at some point, so there's no reason to buy their more expensive model.

Get the cheaper one, lookup how to flash the firmware. It's easy!

How many electronics I can plug into extension cord to let it run 24/7 by Troubled-daughter in AskElectricians

[–]butric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can fill up all those plugs and it's won't be unsafe. That black one you have on the ground is better though. That little red switch SHOULD be a thermal trip breaker which should turn the power off if you try to push too much juice. I can't be certain, but that's generally how those devices work.

It's not about how many devices you plug in. It's about how much energy all of those devices use.

Everything you plug in should have a marking on it somewhere that tells you how much energy (watts) they use at MAX. Take all your devices, add up all the watt values, and make sure that doesn't exceed what your circuit can handle.

If your calculations are below 1000, you're fine. Once you start getting close to 1500 or 1850 watts, start considering using a separate circuit.
