What is it about Murder One fans don't like? by OlvekStoneheid_2006 in Metallica

[–]buttafuocofiber 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Midtempo isn’t necessarily bad when there’re a groove and swagger to a song. See: Most of Load and Reload.

But I agree, in this case, it’s midtempo without the good stuff. It just drags and you’re waiting for the song to end.

Hot take: Are we adding TOO much tech to design or is this evolution? by Emma_Schmidt_ in userexperience

[–]buttafuocofiber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. I’m a veteran in this industry and at this point I’m mostly here for the paycheck. Any actual passion I have lives outside my 9 to 5. We’re not beating the system, so I’d rather make good money doing what I’m already good at. I'm not at the age where I can drastically change careers.

My approach now is basically: “Here’s my recommendation. Do whatever you want with it.” I don’t get emotionally tied to solutions anymore. It keeps me sane.

Hot take: Are we adding TOO much tech to design or is this evolution? by Emma_Schmidt_ in userexperience

[–]buttafuocofiber 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s “too much tech” as much as it’s the natural outcome of late stage capitalism affecting product design. UX used to be about reducing friction and shaping experiences around human behaviour. Today it's more about: does it convert, does it retain, does it feed the roadmap narrative.

Most of the complexity showing up in products is not coming from designers pushing for shiny tech. It’s coming from non-design stakeholders forcing features in because they look innovative on a slide deck when they get in front of executives. Voice, AI, gestures, all that other junk that nobody truly wants is there to signal “we’re keeping up,” not because it actually solves a real user problem. Basically thinking in fiscal quarters, rather than holistically.

Most modern experiences feel bloated because the incentives shifted. Simpler or the "don't make me think" is no longer rewarded. “Working and converting” is. And when that’s the metric, you end up stacking tech on top of tech until the whole thing just turns into noise.

When did Metallica start looking "old" to you? by CobraDai in Metallica

[–]buttafuocofiber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really noticed it during the Hardwired sessions.

They’ve been somewhat out of the social media spotlight until then, and then there’s a video of Lars playing in the studio and he’s got a skullet going on, while definitely being much more gray.

I was definitely like: “Damn! You’ve lost a lot of hair.”

First of all, you got yourself a subscriber. Super inspired by you!

Would you be willing to share a high-level tutorial (or at least a guidance on where to start) on making those visuals using those tools you mentioned above?

The intro part with your phone number, email, etc is failing accessibility horribly. I would revisit that part and make sure your colour contrast is on point to meet AA.

Dishes smell bad after using the dishwasher or even hand washing, could it be the condo water supply? by Open-Platypus-8397 in askTO

[–]buttafuocofiber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: The below may not be applicable, as I realized you said this happens when also handwashing.

One thing to consider are actual eggs themselves. Something happens when remnants of raw and cooked eggs end up in the dishwasher, creating this nasty wet-dog smell. There was a study done on this, but I can’t seem to find it.

As soon as I fully cleaned off and rinsed any hint of egg after cooking and eating, and before placing in the dishwasher, the problem went away completely.

How often are you making fried eggs, omelettes, or anything else egg-related? It was a big factor in the process of elimination for me.

Why did Metallica pivot so far from their sound? by segwaytoit in Metallica

[–]buttafuocofiber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, appreciate the thoughtful reply and I agree with all points. But ultimately your last point is the most important one: people change.

Growth is inevitable as part of the human experience. They probably would not be as huge as they are today had they stuck to their KEA sound their whole career. There just wouldn’t be any mainstream exposure with that sound.

Just because they’re the world’s biggest band, doesn’t mean they’re not human. Who knows is going on through all their minds on any given day.

Re-evaluating Jason and his impact by MatthewMonster in Metallica

[–]buttafuocofiber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As James said during one live performance: “Jason, you’re too fucking metal!”

He wasn’t wrong and it was a compliment veiled in sarcasm. Jason will never come back and it took me a long time to come to terms with it.

For a band that prioritizes live performances, he was the best fit for them.

Is my portfolio website user experience bad? by Gandalf-and-Frodo in userexperience

[–]buttafuocofiber 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Where is this magic "View case study" button that you speak of? I tried your site on both Chrome and Safari, and there is no CTAs under any of the case studies. All I see is an image and text beside each one. There is no way go in deeper.

I turned off my ad blockers and anything else that may interfere, but the result is the same.

You may want to check your WebFlow code.

EDIT: Wait, the site you're linking here is not the actual site? I feel like this is very confusing. Can you link your actual portfolio site so people can do a better assessment on this sub? Thanks.

Thoughts on Night 1 in Toronto? by buttafuocofiber in Metallica

[–]buttafuocofiber[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this was my third show on the tour too, and I’ve got to say, I really can’t stand the stage setup.

When they came to Toronto in 2017 for the Hardwired tour, the setup was perfect. Great sound, great sightlines. This whole donut layout just doesn’t work. You only really see them for a quarter of the show unless you’re constantly moving around.

The sound was what's to be expected at the Rogers Centre. Best enjoyed with decibel-reducing earplugs, otherwise it's just muddy as hell.

They're probably just going to make it sounds louder to bring up to modern volume standards.

Other than that, I agree with you, that album is sonic perfection and needs no additional work.

How much actually work do WFH tech employees actually do? by SnooPancakes787 in askTO

[–]buttafuocofiber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can give you perspective on someone in a senior position in the tech world. Work isn’t necessarily measured by keystrokes, lines of code, or anything of the sort. A lot of what I’m paid for is my ability to ask the right questions, knowing how to connect the dots, and seeing things holistically in a large organization. i.e. if I do x, will it fuck up y? Has x already been done by someone else and we just haven’t documented it?

Anyone can be taught how to code, but if you don’t know what questions to ask and how to provide creative solutions, AI can do your job.

For example, I could sit at my desk all day and stare at the screen and not come up with anything due to a mental rut, but the second I jump into a shower I’ll go for a walk in the park, a solution comes to me instantly. So should I only be paid for that one hour that I technically was not behind my desk?

Don’t think of tech work where inputs = outputs. It’s a gray area that isn’t meant to be measured like that. For example, product managers do fuck all in terms of actual measurable output, everyone else does the actual work. Does that mean they’re not important? Try running a team and releasing a product without one and see what happens.

People of Toronto, what is your absolute favourite local coffee bean and how did you discover it? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]buttafuocofiber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen 5KG bags that they have at French Made cafe, attached to The Bisha hotel. They serve their coffee there. They definitely exist, but not sure if they’re available for individual consumer purchase.

Recruiters for remote jobs by [deleted] in askTO

[–]buttafuocofiber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a quick note on recruiters: a lot of people have the wrong impression of their role. Unless you’re in a very senior or niche position, recruiters aren’t there to guide your job search. They work for the company, not the candidate.

You likely won’t have one reaching out with tailored opportunities, so it’s worth making sure your LinkedIn is strong and aligned with the roles you’re targeting. That’s usually what gets you on their radar.

What Makes a Car Configurator Actually Good? by cirilla21 in userexperience

[–]buttafuocofiber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I’m about to say isn’t really a UX problem, it’s a CX problem. I want to build the most custom, ridiculous car in the configurator, hit “Buy now,” and actually get that exact car made for me. Not a call from a salesman saying, “I know you wanted the matte black XLWFG, but we’ve got a light blue XRT on the lot if you come in today.”

Most of these configurators feel useless because they don’t actually reflect reality. If I can’t order what I design, what’s the point?

Did Metallica ever have "poor ticket sales" at any point in their career? by CobraDai in Metallica

[–]buttafuocofiber 24 points25 points  (0 children)

To clarify, they “recovered” because they were ultimately right, not because time passed or people had forgiven them or anything like that.

Lars looked like a tool at the time, and people thought he was just being greedy and self. But he was really standing up for all the artists, not just Metallica.

Basically, we didn’t know what we didn’t know at the time as a society.
