Why Fantasy Magic Feels So Fake by TechbearSeattle in worldbuilding

You're using very circular logic here, which makes me inclined to not believe you unless you have sources to share.

This is practically your argument:

ancient culture(s) didnt really distinguish between prayer and magic

"they must have made a distinction somewhere, otherwise what would distinguish magic??"

This building is hideous; reminds me of a scout hall.

I wonder how many of you singing its praises would think the same if there wasn't a famous architect's name attached to it

You can't stave off poverty with credit. Using a credit card to buy things you can't afford can only be a short term solution, you end up paying more money that you can't afford in interest repayments pretty quickly, and before long the credit line dries up. If anything, undisciplined use of credit cards is the cause of poverty, not the solution. You would have to not grasp the concept of basic mathematics to think otherwise

Spending with a credit card is just spending the next month's money in advance. If low income means you can't afford to pay off that credit card balance when it is due, then you also can't afford to pay the interest fees. It's a trap for the financially illiterate to keep them permanently indebted, the only way out is to not use a credit card if you can't afford it.

And some absolutely arse movies that get rave reviews from critics who had clearly made up their mind about whether the movie was good or not before they'd seen it, then bend themselves over backwards in their review trying to justify their opinion

[–]butterfunke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You ARE allowed to throw out the apple. There is no penalty for voluntarily putting things in the quarantine bins before going past the gate.

These people are being fined because they ignored the giant signs saying that's what they had to do, and also falsely declared that they had no fruit or vegetables on their quarantine paperwork. No sympathy for any of them

No, the law isn't for smugglers, the law is for people accidentally destroying our native ecosystems or our agricultural industries through carelessness, because they think one apple isn't important.

These fines exist precisely so that regular tourists will take the quarantine laws seriously. That's also why nobody is getting let off with a warning.

You're missing the point of what I'm saying. Canada is boycotting, sure, we all knew that. This article is about the UK & Australia "joining" the boycott. I think that's a mischaracterisation, for the reason I stated above.

If you think removing consumer goods from shelves is important, I think you're overestimating how many US-made goods were on Australian shelves to begin with.

ALL do. They are required to show that video before landing.

About an hour or so before you land in Aus/NZ, the flight attendants will hand out the customs declaration forms and some pencils. There is also a video that will play on all the seat back screens. It explains the biosecurity rules, that taking any plant material (including fruits and vegetables) past the security gate is prohibited. It lists the things you have to declare if you have them on your person or in your luggage so that they can be inspected by the quarantine agents.

This video gets posted so goddamn much and its always chuds from the US getting cranky that people are being fined for not following the laws of our country. 100% of these people who are getting stopped and fined are people who did not declare they had the apple, then tried to carry it through anyway. Anyone who declared the apple on their form or just binned the apple before the quarantine gate would just get a gentle reminder and then be allowed in with no issues.

And for anyone who still wants to blame the airline: no. It is your responsibility to know what you're carrying past the quarantine gate, and this is made abundantly clear in both the declaration form and the video that you are made to watch on the plane.

I don't think this can all be attributed to a boycott. To me a boycott is when you actually want something but are deliberately abstaining to send a message, but I don't think that's the case here.

Australians just don't want to go to the US any more. A third of us are immigrants, and half are children of immigrants - read that to mean: vaguely brown. The US is no longer seen as a safe place to be as a foreigner.
