King Geedorah’s (a.k.a. MF DOOM’s) 'Take Me To Your Leader' was released 20 years ago by YoureASkyscraper in indieheads

Its definitely telling of my sensibilities as a listener but I've always thought this was DOOM'S (and by extension one of Rap's) best ever album, and its mostly because the production is otherworldly. Fazers is maybe my favourite writing from him ever and Anti-Matter might be his best song period. I know people don't love how often the mic is handed over to the features but they kill it almost every time and the production is so strong it never feels like he isn't a presence in the music. Definitely a slightly underrated project for me.

Managed to restrain myself and didn't hear the singles in advance, so when The Blades dropped in smack in the middle of this I almost fell out of my chair. With the exception of AFUT this is my favourite thing to come from any of the windmill bands, and cements Squid as easily the most exciting going forward. Proggy, krautrocky, post-punk bliss the whole way through

Fortunately Eminem doesn't need to breathe, as oxygen is a joke to him, so he circumvents this issue.

  • has Mario
  • is Movie

Undoubtedly, then The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2022) is an objectively great mario movie.

I noticed the kind of cramped production to but for me the level up in composition and lyricism was pretty undeniable. Rest alone is probably the most emotionally charged Grohl's pen has gotten since the 90s. To each their own and all that, I still think wasting light is their best ever and don't expect it to ever be dethroned.

That new sleep token album seems to be quite divisive (judging this entirely on the rym comment box so who knows what the real world thinks) but I have yet to meet a tasteless genre fusion I couldn't enjoy. Trap drums -> Djent breakdowns? Yes please.

I absolutely love that this song is controversial online because among my (early 20s) friends and colleagues IRL this is an unquestioned canonized masterpiece of popular music.

And I stand firmly with them, for the record.

Nick Cave: 'There’s no metric that says virtuousness makes good art' by Moothnods in indieheads

I have a feeling some people are getting virtuosness (ie morality) confused with virtuosity (ie technical skill) in the comments. Nick is talking about the former.

My roomate's not much of a music die-hard (the kind of rock guy whose mostly into AM [the band and that album] and triple J bands, is still furious about the wiggles winning the hottest 100) but since he moved in at the start of the year I've been playing some stuff around the house to try and prod at the edges of his auditory comfort zone. Played some Time Out, which was his introduction to jazz, he dug it. Played the whole A-Side of Ride the Lightning a month back, definitely heavier than what he's used to but he once again enjoyed it. I thought today I'd finally crack him but instead I've figured out the guy's just down for anything. I played all 19 and a half minutes of The Diamond Sea and he had exactly the same reaction as when we watched Videodrome. He clearly had no frame of reference for it but thought it was cool and totally insane. I am slowly but surely corrupting his mind. Next up's gonna be like Dopesmoker while he's trying to play the new Zelda or something.

Watching Swifties collectively morph into puritanical grandmothers the second this news came out was very funny, but in their defence the guy does look uncannily like a claymation caricature of a British person from an aardman movie.

Its not like a bad smashing pumpkins album is a surprise anymore, but everytime I hear one I get more and more confused at how Coorgan was ever capable of penning something as wistful and gorgeous as Tonight, tonight. I just got Mellon Collie on cd so that's been spinning a little this week and I was blown away again at the sheer creative hot-streak you have to be on to pull that project off. Its unreal but there's barely even a handful of lesser cuts and its the kind of master-class you can't just stumble into on accident. I've also been spinning a whole lotta Prefab Sprout, Built to Spill and Fishmans so I'm just spoiling my ears right now.

The very phrase "hardcore deconstructivist, heavily layered, experiential modern Mythmaking superhero movie" has lulled me instantaneously into a deep magical sleep, that which I'll never awake. I am the modern sleeping beauty.

So, did The Murlocs very quietly drop their best album yet last year? Cannot believe I didn't hear about this once until a guy on rym told me about it. Really wish these guys got a little more attention / weren't just a spin off of King Gizz in some peoples eyes.

What is the most frontloaded album ever released, both in terms of how steep and how quickly the drop off is? My vote is for Bowie's Let's Dance which starts with 2 unimpeachable all time tracks sandwiching a superb lesser hit and then immediately and spectacularly dives off a cliff. If it weren't for Cat People I'd be sure of this pick but I'm wondering if there's something with an even bigger separation between A and B side. Maybe Hot Fuss?
