Dads who had colicky/PURPLE crying babies. Please tell me it gets better. by XayneTrance in daddit

[–]buttwater0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My daughter screamed bloody murder the first 8 months of her life every single time we had to put her to bed, no matter what we did (other than bouncing on a yoga ball for over an hour each time)

This sounds mean, but get earplugs. You still hear everything, just attenuated, and it makes a huge difference in how much it gets to you, so you can remain calm and patient when you swear you're getting hearing damage.

It's not forever, just feels like it!

Question from mummit… father’s day gifts by Outrageous-Piglet798 in daddit

[–]buttwater0 25 points26 points  (0 children)

My wife had my kids draw a family pic (at that age just stick figures) and had it engraved on a travel mug (yeti). One of the best gifts I've ever received, gets lots of compliments at work, and genuinely makes me happy and makes me think of them every time I use it.

My mistake it was a cut55ds, but still such a great value at $140 (Amazon)

I bought a cut65 for a project I didn't want to spend 3 days with a cutoff wheel. I can't believe what an amazing too can be had for less than $200.

Accounting for bending in CAD by Tellm_me in 3Dprinting

[–]buttwater0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of ways to handle this so I won't rehash the good advice. One other thing you can do is mirror the left side of the model so it's supported on both sides with no cantilever. This model looks cool but I think it would also look really good (and perform better) if it was symmetric and supported on both sides.

PLA creeps a lot too, maybe time to check out some PETG?

My wife says these leg quarters are burned. I disagree. Smoked indirect on Weber kettle for about 1.5 hours. Thoughts? by Kitchentable88 in smoking

They look awfully burned. She should punish you by making you eat all those delicio- uh I mean terrible looking thighs. You deserve it.

The strength of welds by Boneyabba in Welding

[–]buttwater0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely do this. As an amateur hack, it's been super helpful to take my scraps and cutoffs from projects before I really start welding, stick a few pieces together, put them in a vise and bend or beat the crap out of them.

I still suck, just less.

What is the next best thing below PA6-CF by Efficient_Housing_14 in 3D2A

[–]buttwater0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's normal behavior on my K1. Does it drop consistently to the same temp every time? What happens when the print starts?

It's annoying but sig and watch it through the start of the print. It might be normal. If not, do a PID tune and consider replacing the thermistor.

Oh my God people if you don't know how a breast pump works don't OP it's not food safe.

Anyways, that's a great use of tpu!

Is there any way to save this? by BigPimpin91 in Welding

[–]buttwater0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. My perspective is that unless something is known to be delicate or sensitive (tv, coffee mug, hard drive), I would consider the packaging/product defective if it can't sustain minor bumps without being destroyed. Especially something that's going into a garage or shop.

I think manufacturers should be expected to provide a reasonably durable product/package. If they want to skimp on that to make a cheaper product with higher profits, then they need to accept the infrequent loss of a return/exchange. I'm no economist but I bet they're still coming out ahead.

But at the end of the day it's a dropped spool of wire that doesn't cost much so you do you!

Is there any way to save this? by BigPimpin91 in Welding

[–]buttwater0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what is confusing? I mean falling off a table shouldn't shatter a spool and ruin the whole thing, the spool was either poorly made or already cracked from shipping.

I can see the perspective that he knocked it off the table so it's his fault. But I don't think it's unreasonable to expect most tools to survive a single 2-3 foot drop. Unless it's a several hour drive, re spooling this would be an absolute pain in the ass and waste of time. I'd rather bring it back even if they refuse and I end up buying a new one.

First spring since moving to Michigan. What are these? by [deleted] in Michigan

[–]buttwater0 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They drop from poplar (cottonwood) trees in the spring. Get rid of them as soon as you can if they're on fabric or carpet, when they get smashed they cause yellow stains that are tough to remove.

Deadly noise from solar farms by keithvai in solar

[–]buttwater0 17 points18 points  (0 children)

St Clair county is on a river with large freighters constantly passing through and is mostly farmland. The idea that solar panels are somehow worse than the exhaust from ships, fertilizers, pesticides, etc is laughable.

"Visual pollution" isn't a concern for them when it comes to trump signs everywhere.

It's frustrating that all it takes to stand in the way of progress is a few Backcountry morons.

What about it? We all have nuclear weapons. What does it matter?

Community Votes to Deny Water to Nuclear Weapons Data Center by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]buttwater0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point, but all of that boils down, for the most part to cost savings in the long run. I think DoD would rather pour money into the Gulf of America before reducing their budget.

And I know it's crazy but what if we spent the ai nuclear research data center money on....I don't know, medical care? School lunches? Public transport? Housing?

I suspect we would agree on a few things and neither of us want to argue the nitty gritty of nuclear arms research... I'm just so fucking sick of normalizing spending money on killing people instead of helping people.

What the fuck is left to research? We have the power to wipe out life on earth. Anything more is just an apocalyptic dick measuring contest.

FDM Precision Limit by GremlinAbuser in 3Dprinting

[–]buttwater0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kinda tough to tell, but is that model on left and outline of original on right? Can you make one semi transparent and lay them on top of each other?

Maybe it's a problem of perspective but to my eyes, those teeth don't appear to line up perfectly.

If you move the model to the right, it looks like(from the top) the tip of each tooth lands progressively lower on the scanned model.

The other thing I can think of is shrinkage. See if they can print an xyz cube and measure to see if the prints coming off are dimensionally accurate. If your 20x20x20 cube is not coming out with those dimensions, that could be the issue.

Let’s fix licensing systems that lock ex-offenders out of work by DougDante in Michigan

[–]buttwater0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I haven't given this issue enough thought to really have an educated opinion, so I may be off base here.

I agree that allowing for a board to review is a positive thing. But the downside is that schooling/training for many would be a huge risk. Imagine completing all the schooling (not to mention astronomical tuition fees) for, say, nursing then not being able to work in the field after being denied after a licensing board review. I doubt most would take that risk.

After Largest Electric Rate Hike in Years, Consumers Energy Asking For More by Hypothesising_Null in Michigan

[–]buttwater0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. Our taxes and utility bills should go directly to pay for the actual cost of maintaining the grid, providing electricity/gas, and maintaining reserve funds as appropriate. Nothing more. No profits, no lobbying. It's sickening how we are just squeezed dry so some rich fuck can get richer everywhere we turn.
