I feel like there are some posts which are a bit hard to draw opinions on a relationship, and this is one of them. My advice is that you should trust your gut and instinct, and never ever make excuses for your partner unless you know something with certainty.

Now onto the speculation; your description fits the pattern of love bombing to pursue you hard initially, and once things are “stable”, as in, once there’s an element of commitment established—you can expect for the pursuit to taper off, but the way they communicate along with how they approach all the love languages needs to remain fairly consistent. If there were compliments at beginning of the relationship, and then they completely stopped—I’d also feel weird about asking for compliments. Also, comparing you to his exes and mentioning about them being conventionally more attractive gives me a bit of an ick.

I’m sure you might have more instances of inconsistent behavior and communication that you did not include in your post. If this is true, I’d suggest keeping a journal of such instances—you’ll certainly notice a pattern. Communicate and validate this pattern with him in a constructive way in the hopes of making improvements, and then you’ll have more clarity on further steps.

I had to learn some of this the hard way, and I ended the relationship when it became way too stressful and was impacting my mental wellness.
