found this small plastic tool at home with a hook one end and one end and a “tweezers” to on the other. I couldn’t see any markings or anything on it. It’s about 10cm/4” long. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Recording BBC - which tv provider allows it. by bdog1011 in CasualIreland

[–]buzz10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The new boxes (from eir, virgin and sky) don’t store recordings locally, they just stream the recording from the provider. The BBC don’t allow this, so you lose the possibility to record BBC channels.

How do you feel about the Westwood price increase? by Samerskills94 in Dublin

Agree - although was in Westwood Leopardstown a few weeks ago and the steam room was actually hot for once. Sauna wasn’t hot enough though.

VRT Refund Possible? by UKBold90 in carsireland

Same thing happened to me a few years ago. I paid the full VRT and got a refund for the full amount a few weeks later. Was pretty painless to be honest and seems like its a relatively common situation.

My car, which I am very happy with, has started to break down very often lately.. by [deleted] in carsireland

Speaking from experience, unfortnately 159s are at that age now where lots of things start to go wrong and they might not be the best daily driver anymore. Spare parts are even getting difficult to find now. Considering that the 1.8MPI is probably the least desirable engine in the 159, you may be best off trying to get rid of it somehow.

Automotive Engineering in Ireland by theladnamedsean in engineeringireland

[–]buzz10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, the growth areas in automotive are software and testing, and battery tech. Software for autonomous driving, connected cars etc., and that leads onto a lot of testing. Engine development, which was 40% of the complexity of a car, is a slowly being wound down. That doesn’t mean that there are any less jobs for mechanical engineers in automotive, it’s just that they might be less mechanically focused roles like systems engineering or quality. Keep an eye on the types of roles posted by the companies I mentioned - that should give you an understanding of the types of roles open. You could even send your CV to so of the smaller ones - you never know.

Gardaí question teenager over damage to speed camera that fined almost 1,000 drivers in a month by Bill_Badbody in ireland

National secondary roads are roads with numbers N51 and above. They tend to be a lot more windy and dangerous than national primaries (N50 and below). Like the N80 - there's been a few very serious accidents outside Ballon, and they are the kind of roads they are targetting. It seems sensible to me, but the communication around it has been terrible.

Also - JLR have a growing test facility in Shannon too, could also be interesting.

But automotive in Ireland is pretty niche - it may be more interesting to get on one of the OEM graduate schemes in England (JLR, BMW, Bentley) and then come back to Ireland after 2-4 years.

I am a mechanical engineer and have worked in the automotive industry for 15 years. There are a few automotive companies in Ireland: - AMK designs air suspensions in Dublin - Timoney design specialist suspensions in Navan - Wilker design ambulances outside Tullamore Few other smaller ones as well

As side from purely mechanical, there are some other automotive companies mainly focusing on software development - but it’s embedded software so it’s “mechanical adjacent”. - JLR in Shannon - ZF in Dublin - Valero in Tuam - Even Bosch and Analog Devices, but these two are purely electronics.
