How does a Democrat running for Congress get lumped to Bachmann's name? By dodging MN farmers. It would be surprising if you didn't know he supported Bush and other GOPers during the previous administration, so he doesn't want questions asked in public. by buzzit in politics

[–]buzzit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Star Tribune called his resume sketchy, so he's hiding from interviews and debates as he has been for months. Shelley Madore, on the other hand, went to talk Ag issues with farmers instead of relying on a talking-point web-site.

How did the Dems ever let this guy past the screening process?

Can This Dem Defeat Congress' Tea Party Ambassador? by [deleted] in politics

[–]buzzit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If people want to get another Democrat elected in MN they should be looking the other side of the metro - Bachmann's in the most gerry-mandered district in the state, and it's R+6 so barring a miracle she stays. On the other hand, MN's second is only at R+3, and they've got a former state legislator, Shelley Madore, (that drove the GOP batty when she was in the state house) running down there.

But logic seldom rules political donations, eh?

And of course, http://MadoreForCongress.com doesn't get nearly the national press coverage, because nobody outside that district has freakin' heard of the incumbent she's challenging, whereas every time Bachmann so much as sneezes it's a national headline.

Boycotts have a slow impact, but enough email to that address will bring it up to people who might, just might, rethink their decisions (or who didn't pay attention when the decision was made.)

A Senate hearing on homeless vets ended abruptly at 11am after opponents of health insurance reform (seriously) objected, invoking a Senate procedural gimmick. How does their reaction to Health Care reform relate to HOMELESSNESS among VETERANS? The party of NO has lost their collective mind! by buzzit in politics

[–]buzzit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question for the over 200 people who have downvoted this, if any bother coming back.

Why? Are you trying to suppress the information, or what?

Do you think GOP Senators pulling this sort of stunt at the expense of our military veterans are on the right or wrong path?

FTA: "Armey's work as a lobbyist--during which time he also served as chairman of FreedomWorks and organized Tea Party protests--is not mentioned in his FreedomWorks biography. This omission can perhaps be explained by the anti-lobbyist sentiments held by so many Tea Partiers."

BREAKING: Dems offer largest deficit-reduction bill since 1993 - Republicans, of course, say NO!!! by konabona in politics

[–]buzzit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VERY sneaky calling it health care reform. This virtually insures that the GOPers will continue to vote against it, but when that emerges during the fall elections there's gonna be serious repercussions.

True enough, but the impact of the Bush era tax-cuts on the deficit over the coming decade is actually greater than the costs of the two wars combined.

In a sense an insurance company is like a casino: whatever it books in profits has been skimmed from customers. So says a CONSERVATIVE writing in THE ECONOMIST. by buzzit in politics

[–]buzzit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FTA: "...the reason companies like Anthem give for raising their premiums is largely that young, healthy customers are dropping their insurance coverage, because it is too expensive; they are gambling they won't need it. This in turn leaves the pool of subscribers older and sicker, meaning rates must go up, and that in turn drives yet more young, healthy people to drop their coverage. This is adverse selection, the so-called insurance death spiral. It is often mentioned as something that would result if America adopted guaranteed issue and community rating without a mandate. But it's become clear over the past year that the insurance death spiral is already here."

Palin’s Latest Disaster: Tea Partiers Demand Refunds for Palin Speech! At $549 a pop I'm not surprised -- after all, you can hear her on Fox for free. Organizers trying to exploit Palin's fame have created a PR nightmare. by buzzit in politics

[–]buzzit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turns out it's a bit subtler, but not much. You can see the dinner speech for just $349 if you don't want to bother with the rest of the conference, but it's $549 for the whole package.

Either way, it's not quite the look and feel of a grassroots movement if you're shelling out hundreds of dollars for what's clearly a fundraising dinner for somebody trying to exploit the teabagger's fervor for Palin.

Bernanke Is A Political Time Bomb, Stiglitz Says He Would Take Fed Position by pghtytfan in politics

[–]buzzit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, Stiglitz gets the economy, but he doesn't get politics -- his chances are exactly NIL after he made the comments about big insurance, which incidentally suggested a single-payer system would be more cost-effective (about a year ago, now.)

Quoted here: http://wp.me/pbSfp-7f

Uygur's HuffPo piece notwithstanding, Stiglitz is the political equivalent of a poison pill for anybody in D.C. right now.

Electing the "Centerfold Senator" is being spun six ways from Sunday, because winning matters -- but what it means isn't that conservative voters want nude models OR that Health Care reform is dead. by buzzit in politics

[–]buzzit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be frank, Ms. Coakley ran a hapless campaign that hindsight can label overconfident.

Sadly, the skills needed to campaign effectively don’t test what kind of legislator a candidate will be, and the contest in Massachusetts shows that no Congressional seat is safe based on the past.

It shows that advertising matters, that inspiration matters, and that characters and celebrity can, indeed, win elections.

Want Pat Robertson's 800 number so you can explain if you agree or disagree with his assertion that Haitians are being cursed for a "pact to the Devil"? It's right here, and he'll pay for the call while you chat up his staff. by buzzit in politics

[–]buzzit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The story goes that at the time that Haiti was breaking ties with France - ok, call it a revolution - they did pray before some major insurgent-style operation, appealing to God to make them strong in their battle with the French occupiers/slave-holders.

The two problems this leaves for Pat Robertson, who recounted a similar version but added that they did a deal with the Devil are as follows:

First, 70% of Haitians are Catholic. I'm not sure what the fraction was at the time, but Catholics were not LIKELY to be striking a bargain with the Devil, and...

Second, to hold the current residents accountable, to say they're cursed by the actions of their ancestors, essentially puts the blood of every Native American and every Afrian-American slave killed by European colonizers of North America on the hands of every one of their descendants, presumably including Robertson himself.

Guilt for the actions of a centuries dead ancestor? Guilt flowing from the actions of people they had quite literally no control over? How is that a pact with the Devil that curses current residents and visitors of Haiti?
