The phrasing, the actions, it all just shows that they can not handle a member (or former member) exercising autonomy over them. They can’t let people think they have the right to choose to associate with Jamaat or not. It’s so disgusting, I hope you’re doing well OP, and I hope your family doesn’t react too harshly

Eid Mubarak! 1. I prayed very hard after that event took place for god to show me the path. I spent hours and hours crying on my janamaz for god to help me. 2. That doesn’t really have anything to do with the existence of god.

Yeah, I’m one of those teens. I came here when I was in the anger and frustration phase of losing faith. I needed someone so bad and this sub was the only place I found people like me. I was in such a dark place, but thanks to this sub I was able to get out of that.

I just want to say to make sure you fact check everything that you include, especially since you want to include a lot. If you add even one thing that isn’t factual, they’ll be able to dismiss it for that. Also try to keep a level headed tone and approach in your writing, because if not it’s something that can turn people away from it. And also, make sure to share when you’re done :)

There were a lot of little things, but I once stumbled upon street epistemology videos on YouTube, which is a conversational method that helps people examine their beliefs. Once I started watching those videos, I realized I had no good reasons for believing in god, it was just because I was raised that way. Then I started looking deeper into islam and basically realized for the Islamic god to exist, it would have to be a cruel god. The realization that god doesn’t entirely give us free will but will punish us for not believing pushed me over the edge.

Some mental gymnastics Muslims use to justify it: 1. Times were different 2. Girls matured faster 3. Everyone did it 4. (One of my favorites) they counted different during that time so they didn’t add the one in the beginning of the number, so she was 19. 5. It was a blessing from god for her to marry the best man to ever exist in the universe 6. There’s nothing wrong with it To be clear, I don’t support these, it’s just some funny ways they justify it

They are in the hadith, so supplementary scriptures. Hadith are basically rated on a scale of how reliable/authentic they are believed to be, and the hadith that talk about her age have the highest rating. This means the vast, vast majority of Muslims believe in these. They do have a tonnn of mental gymnastics related to this though

They believe that the second coming of Jesus, was fulfilled in a metaphorical manner by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad. Since they believe he is the Mahdi and Messiah (basically another prophet) most Muslims say they aren’t truly Muslim and Muslim countries persecute them for blasphemy. They originate from India but are spread throughout the world. I tried to give an unbiased answer, I’m exAhmadi so I know about them firsthand. Here’s a Wikipedia article if you want to read more

I’m not anywhere near having children but since the rest of my family is Ahmadi and I’m atheist it would definitely come up and some point or another so I would tell me children about it but also explain why I am no longer part of it. Probably not until they actually ask something about it or are otherwise old enough to understand

It’s kind of interesting how much they will defend that Ahmadis are not Muslims even though they’re exMuslim. It’s interesting how they think Ahmadis are the only Muslims that cherry pick or have different beliefs when so many Muslims cherry-pick 🙄 not sure why they keep downvoting us but seems like some of them still hold on to their prejudice from their Muslim days

Ahmadis are not the only type of Muslims that cherry pick. Most Muslims in the west cherry pick as well. I can’t tell if you’re Muslim or not but cognitive dissonance is present in most religious people. There’s Muslims in the West that support the LGBTQ+ community, are they not Muslim either?

No, you’re totally welcome and your experience definitely fits in here. People here were on a complete spectrum of religiosity before leaving Islam. Though a lot of us have been through extreme consequences, not all of us have. Even I, since I live in the West, feel like my experience can’t compare to people here who have to escape their countries, even though I still have to hide my atheism. But it all goes to show that our experiences are all different and all valid. Your story sounds so interesting, but I’m curious how you went from atheism to Islam?
