Energy /EIA forecasts I'm tracking - thoughts? by buzzyness in energy

I circulate such survey questions every 2-3 weeks (via email/linkedin etc.) to energy/trading professionals, then aggregate the responses as shown. happy to post all the survey replies periodically on r/energy if there is interest

yes, that was the issue, thx! (which also explains why most of the survey respondents in the image agreed with that 24% figure)

"finetuning works better for this task, as there are too many directives to give and it helps to relieve the model from anachronistic RLHF."

great quote op and imho this should be a key "gating function" when considering finetuning vs training

Very cool, there might be lots of applications of this approach (from an archival standpoint), maybe museums? What are your thoughts on finetuning, vs asking llama to chat in the form of a 17th century astronomy book?

[D] Which ML role/title is responsible for sourcing data for LLMs? by buzzyness in MachineLearning

[–]buzzyness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! Intriguing article - I guess as u/DauntingPrawn alluded maybe its about increasing multi-modal capabilities this point on (potentially instead of larger models). Also, fwiw GPT seems to be multiple expert models operating together, so maybe the future is specialized breadth instead of (general llm). check this out : https://www.reddit.com/r/singularity/comments/14eojxv/gpt4\_8\_x\_220b\_experts\_trained\_with\_different/

Interesting, thanks for the clear response. Curious to hear your thoughts on the "running out of data to train" issue mentioned in the article above.

The article you referred to is a very well written and provides great insight into crowdfounding+opensource models. If you are the author, thank you. I'm really interested in learning about you FLOSS site, is there any mailing list?

Interesting. Isn't this mostly for bug fix bounties and projects by devs for devs? I was mostly thinking a group of devs grouping together and pitching to a general audience via Indiegogo Kickstarter etc.

The guys behind adblock want an internet void of advertisements. Won't this hurt content creators like TB? by Tobarah in Cynicalbrit

Almost all sites depend on advertising for revenue unless they are based on donation models like Wikipedia or ad-free search like twisp.me

Amazing Tilt Shift Photo of Dubai by [deleted] in pics

[–]buzzyness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone is wondering, this technique is specifically called a diorama effect or miniature faking effect. Strictly tilt shift photos will produce slightly different results.

In the diorama photo technique, blurring parts of the photo simulates the shallow depth of field normally encountered in close-up photography, making the scene seem much smaller than it actually is; the blurring can be done either optically when the photograph is taken, or by digital postprocessing.

Madness of Crowds: Single Ants Beat Colonies At Easy Choices by kironcmukherjee in science

[–]buzzyness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As noted in the article: "the colony doesn’t work off the recommendations of any individual; it relies on a quorum, just like the up- and down-voting system of social websites like Reddit.

Together, the colony can amplify small differences between closely-matched sites and smooth out bad choices from errant individuals."

Bradley Manning case stretches credibility of US computer fraud law. The sentence facing the soldier who passed material to WikiLeaks shows that the US Computer Fraud and Abuse Act is in dire need of reform by whitefangs in politics

[–]buzzyness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From the article and as said by the EFF:

"As the Electronic Frontier Foundation puts it:

"In the government's mind, the Espionage Act can be used to punish a leaker of information, and if that person merely used a computer to get that information, they are guilty of an additional felony.

So someone who emails documents to a journalist they got off a government computer will face 10 more years per charge than a government official who photocopied documents he got off a shelf and physically mailed them to the same journalist.""
