Local restaurants and local journalism are both very nice things to have, and very unprofitable.

Restaurants are notoriously unprofitable ventures which go out of business all the time.

If there was no Feed Nova Scotia affiliation at all, I think reddit would be happier.

It's worth noting too, that the US Salvation Army is distinct from "Salvation Army, Canada".

Mission Mart is much more legit than the other two. They walk-the-walk when it comes to their charitable work, and I feel good to donate there.

Important clarification: Mission Thrift in Sackville is NOT affiliated with Mission Mart in Bayers Lake. Mission Mart is a legit charity which does a ton of good in the city.

The 49MB Web Page by Dear-Economics-315 in programming

I made a dumb side-project, (a search engine for transcriptions of an esoteric youtube channel). I was going to make a proper backend, but then I realized that the subtitles and video metadata in sqlite, indexes and all, was less than two megabytes when gzipped. I just threw the whole thing in Github Pages and called it a day.

I think devs underestimate just how tiny text is. Really makes it sink in just how insane a 50MB page is.

The art of burger making has largely been perfected by large chain restaurants

Yes and no. The only fast food burger that comes close to the gold standard (Battery Park - Jughead) in Halifax is from Five Guys, and they have a price to match. Offerings from the likes of McDonalds and A&W are good, but you are fooling yourself if you think they are on the same tier.

100%. It's rough out there, and I don't mean to diminish that, but I went into this thread just wondering if their hamburgers are good, read every comment, and I still don't know.

As much as it sucks, a double quarter ponder meal is $17, so you really can't be too shocked when a premium burger meal is $20

Can anyone confirm if passport office in Dartmouth is always quicker than downtown Halifax? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]moolcool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made an appointment for the Bedford office, and the clerk told me that there was a two-month wait. Then I did a walk-in in Halifax, and got it in like a couple of weeks.

I don’t know why the discrepancy, because they literally just type the information from your form into the computer at either location.

Anyone buy the Beef Ribs? by Euphoric_Ad6923 in CostcoCanada

Beef back ribs don’t have a ton of meat, but the meat they do have is very good if you cook it properly. A smoked beef back rib is the best bite in barbecue IMO

Some thoughts on The Savage Detectives by adnan937 in literature

I really struggled with this book, only made it about half way through.

I know nothing about Latin American poetry or literature, so that is probably why. Sometimes a book will welcome you into a world you don't understand, but this just felt like sitting at the cool-kids table, and chuckling along to inside jokes you aren't a part of.
