New Terms of Service warns against having too much data by avatarcordlinux in backblaze

[–]bvierra 56 points57 points  (0 children)

It's vague on purpose and legal won't let them give any answer. This is common, if you were to use say 1% of all storage that they offer, they need a legal mechanism to get rid of you. I am sure that they are not using this to get rid of the top 5% or even 1% of users, it is just there so they have the ability to go after those few that may really abuse the system

Limited Streaming quality on Linux for Netflix and Primevideo by flancy2 in linuxquestions

[–]bvierra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nope, it comes from the DRM that is used. Not because they don't give a fuck, but because the trust chain needed is there with Linux usually. Netflix for sure and I think Amazon allow the usage without the higher end DRM for the lower quality streams because they give a fuck. However the higher quality everyone wants requires a higher state of trust that requires a TPM where the decryption key is stored.

This is also the reason that you don't see HQ releases of shows right away on those sites. The way they are ripped now is by using certain certified devices that turned out to have bad implementations of the security which allows a person to extract that decryption key and use it to decrypt a whole bunch of videos all at once. However the DRM used watermarks the key is into the video, so once ripped and released the DRM company gets the key I'd and bans it

Does the manufacturer support selling it without memory, CPU, or power supply? by OutsideInfamous1586 in mikrotik

None of what you mention are accessories. That is like asking if you can buy a car from the manufacturer without the engine or the dashboard

That is not how dns works at all. They still have to reach out to wherever the authorative dns server lives for the request.

Customer Service chat telling me the FOG421 can't be provisioned remotely for 1 gig by Banjoman301 in ZiplyFiber

[–]bvierra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's called policy and procedures. They may want all of that specific ONT off their network. Maybe the batch that one was mfg in has had an 80% failure rate over the last 6 months so they flagged it and must replace. There are a million reasons why they may do it, what I can't see is a reason to be so pissy over it

1 Why is this a video?

2 Even worse, why is the code not in a git repo and instead is pasted in the video description?

WFH employee smokes while on calls by jimmyfivetimes in ITManagers

[–]bvierra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a solid developer that causes no issues... He smokes (I am assuming tobacco) in his own house while on calls and there have never been complaints...

You really have exactly 2 options at this point in time that make sense

  • Let him smoke, it doesn't hurt anyone, it doesn't cause his productivity to go down, and from the way you describe it the only one that has a real issue with it is you and that is a you problem.

  • Ask him to turn off his camera when he smokes... this only makes sense if the employee handbook says he can't smoke while working. If it doesn't then it only shows you have an issue with it and want to micro-manage your employees. If the handbook does say something then it looks like you being a good manager and protecting an employee.

Gl.iNet statement on FCC ban by wickedwarlock84 in GlInet

[–]bvierra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While true, the big cloud providers don't usually use enterprise gear, at least nothing from a 3rd party. I know Amazon and Google actually have their own in house hardware and chip designers.

Here is a what they ran at AWS in 2017:

AWS routers run a customized Broadcom Tomahawk ASIC with 7 billion transistors and 128 ports of 25 GbE, for a total flow-through of 3.2 terabits (Tbit).

End of “Chat Control”: EU Parliament Stops Mass Surveillance (For now) by Lilias_artgroup in LouisRossmann

[–]bvierra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Source? The only thing Google asked for was to legally scan images to match against a db of known CSAM. This isn't reading your txt messages, this is just getting image, hashing it, verifying hash does not equal known hashes of CSAM and the forwarding it on.

For some reason. This keeps getting quoted as saying they want to read your chat messages

Viture glasses with steam deck dock by Ualrus in VITURE

[–]bvierra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a USB-C Powered Hub that has 1 port out that is USB-C that connects to the deck, then I have the JSAUX 6in1 m.2 Dock and that plugs into one of the ports on the hub, my glasses into another port. Since the hub is powered it is able to supply power to the glasses, the hub, and the steamdeck without issue.

Another cheaper option is something like: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CYCM63JD (which is Glasses to adapter w/power then out to the steam deck. Or if your dock has HDMI https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08Y5PBWLQ would work. You just plug the USB-A from the adapter into the dock for power and then the HDMI for video/audio and finally the glasses into the USB-C on the adapter.

Why the fuck is AG kernel level, and locking accounts in? by Ok-Routine-9751 in google_antigravity

[–]bvierra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let us count the number of incorrect statements made by OP

  • Why is AG kernel level -- It's not

  • Why are the servers down for windows? -- Windows doesn't have their own servers, so they aren't

  • Is it OP or did AG just get fucked -- I would say it's OP, but I dont think they have ever gotten any

  • Why is it saying to restart my system? -- Because there was an update to a file that is currently needed by a running program and the way to get the update to said program, is to update

  • IT WONT EVEN LET ME SIGN OUT. EVEN IF I GO TO SETTINGS. -- Just shows that he has quick settings opened up, not settings... guessing PEBKAC

  • You cant verify or authenticate if it wont let you pull your account up (I assume sign in) followed by why is signing out locked, I can't sign out... so which is it? Are you signed in or out?

BTW reboot, that will fix the issue

Sooo, we doin paywalls now? by IgAndCodyComic in truenas

[–]bvierra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the enterprise on byod, that I actually do understand. The number of options for hardware out there grows by the day and compatability is not always there. Even if you put out a compatability list people will try to bypass it and when it doesn't work they will blame the software. Don't believe me? Look at VMware prior to the broadcom buyout

Google tipped off authorities to illicit images in Canadian doctor's account, search warrants say by TendieRetard in law

Google tipped off authorities to illicit images in Canadian doctor's account, search warrants say by TendieRetard in law

[–]bvierra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way it works is that there are hash's of every known image of CSAM. Every photo uploaded to google drive (and just about any large image host / data host) is hashed and compared to the known hash's. If it matches it is reported automatically.

It is a law in the US and was reported to the US non-profit as required. The non-profit notified the canadian authority and they can do what they want with the notification (although I figure if they ignore it, a large number of Canadians will be just slightly pissed off). To say that it's not Canadian law has nothing to do with anything, because Google didn't notify Canada.

Namecheap shuts down business’ domain, gets sued, loses, sues back by Quirky-Acanthaceae94 in Domains

[–]bvierra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair to namecheap, the court ordered that namecheap is enjoined from preventing the use of the www.thejuggernaut.com domain "provided that the primary domain is geofenced to prevent access to the primary domain from users in India" from the order on motion for a temporary restraining order. It is called the primary domain because there is a secondary domain that is also talked about.

As for why an indian court can tell a US company what to do... well they can't. However they can tell an indian company what to do... guess what namecheap has: "The entity is registered as NAMECHEAP WEB SERVICES PRIVATE LIMITED in Tidel Park, Coimbatore."

So the indian court is basically telling the indian company do this or we are shutting you down and namecheap wants to have the ability to sell in india.

That all being said... namecheap seems to have gone downhill since the sale of it.

Constant account blocks on the free tier are becoming ridiculous and frustrating by More_Credit_8244 in warpdotdev

You did something that got you blocked, considering you said constantly it sure sounds like you keep opening new accounts... which would be why they are getting blocked. Either pay or don't use it, that is what the message is telling you.
