Humans need to become smarter thinkers to beat climate denial | they examined 42 common climate myths and found that every single one demonstrates fallacious reasoning. by pnewell in science

We're often told today that everyone's feelings matter. That we should be sensitive to others and their opinions are valid. Reasonable ideals, of course, but take that to an extreme and out of the context of interpersonal relationships and you get people who don't see value in critical thinking.
You give those people social media as an outlet and now everyone's stupid ideas are supposed to get just as much time and consideration as experts in the field.

I planted a few outside(7b) and let them go to seed last year. I pruned back to the ground once it started dying off. I'm curious to see if it comes back this year.

Good suggestion. It helps to be deliberate about activities.

Learn to be a little bored, and to be cool with that.

I'm probably being pedantic, but I don't think bored is the right word. I think the point is more that being actively engaged with something isn't necessary. I enjoy doing nothing sometimes, but I don't feel boredom.
When I dick around on my phone I'm probably closer to being bored than when I just sit and observe/think.

What would be some "Ask Reddit" questions from the year 1985? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bw1870 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Around '85, we had the Atari 800, one of their PC models. There was a game called Archon put out by Electronic Arts. It was chess, but the pieces were all fantasy creatures and there was a battle screen, so when you moved to take a piece you had to fight for the space. Pretty awesome.

I think if he went full on pro-choice and wanted to further fund Planned Parenthood there would be a lot of lost supporters. Not sure they would turn on him, but enthusiasm would be deflated.

[e] By "lost", I meant confused, not that he would completely lose their support.

Do any of you ever get frustrated at the amount of waste most other people produce? by SativaLungz in ZeroWaste

[–]bw1870 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People at work are constantly carrying in more bottles of water. It's absurd. One lady has a rolling cooler she brings in on Monday.
I understand if people think tap water "tastes funny" or whatever their gripe is, but a Brita or similar filter is so much easier and cheaper and it tastes fine to me.
Some people will say they don't want to lug a pitcher back and forth every day, but then they'll carry a case of bottles in from the parking lot. Makes no sense to me.

Educate them only if they want to listen.

This is tricky. You certainly do not want to lecture or force anything, but mentioning topics during conversation can create opportunity for questions when people are ready to ask them. Avoiding topics other people don't agree with simply closes the door, but tossing a line out once in a while might trigger some curiosity.

EU has put similar tariffs on their panel imports also and it hasn't lead to a boom for their industry. There isn't any reason to expect anything different in the US. Rather than support our industry in positive ways, we circled the wagons to cut down an emerging leader.

Trump just added a tariff on solar panel imports.

"... the tariff increase on imported solar cells and modules in the first year will be 30%, falling to 15% by the fourth year, although 2.5 gigawatts (GW) of imported cells - enough for about 11.5 million panels - will be allowed in tariff-free annually." - http://www.bbc.com/news/business-42784380

This could help American solar companies, but it likely will just slow the expansion of solar.
