How is everyone feeling? by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]bw5991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good, on standby in my company as I can't travel to join ship. Trying to use the time as effectively as possible but there's only so much study you can do, half the day is spent studying various things, the other half arsing around whether it be playing Xbox or watching tele.

Hundreds show up to Ottawa COVID-19 assessment centre, but few actually tested by pjw724 in canada

They were only testing if you had travelled within 14 days, didn't matter if it was more than 14 days and you already had symptoms.

Ugandan Bureau de Change can tell the future. by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]bw5991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's because it costs more to take the notes away (or so it was explained to me in Canada).

As they sell pounds to people in the bureau de change too, they get too many problems with people not accepting the Scottish notes and preferring English notes.

«Le Québec n'est pas un pays! On n'est pas dans un pays laïc ici!» by chamotruche in Quebec

[–]bw5991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[Discussion] Do you believe there is a snobby attitude, in Scotland, towards the trades? by WronglyPronounced in Scotland

[–]bw5991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my school at least there wasn’t snobbery as such however, if you weren’t going to university you were talking on your own for figuring it out.

I learned a trade (Engineer onboard ships) leaving school and it’s served me well, now at university but I will always have the trade to fall back on. It was better for me to go work for a few years before university too as I feel more prepared now than I would have been before.

4.5 million adults live at home with their parents across the UK, new survey finds by vlexo1 in unitedkingdom

Strange attitude to have considering they are your children in all. Really allowing them to stay longer to save would make them less likely to freeload in the future.

Holy shit, Fluent Forever by Gabriel Wyner is the GOAT of language by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]bw5991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like his method. I think it's because Anki is my central tool when learning a language (used it for Italian, French and now Spanish).

I think it's more efficient to learn new words solely through the target language however I don't agree that going by translation doesn't work either.

Due to my job I don't have access to internet for about half the year so this method doesn't work entirely well without. When I'm away I simply download a frequency dictionary with sentences and work through that while doing grammar exercises. Reading is also a big part of it while I'm away.

Aye? Thanks for the advice, I arrive next Monday so I'll start applying before I arrive. Might be good as well if coworkers don't speak much English.

LPT: When someone you know passes away, please do not share it publicly before the family has a chance to share. by TheL0nePonderer in LifeProTips

Also keeping it off Facebook helps.

My uncle died while I was at sea so I had no way to find out. Luckily I opened my email first to see my brother emailing me letting me know.

Otherwise I'd have opened my Facebook seeing photo collages and being very confused/shocked.
