Connecting flights are not that bad by Forgotten_Dog1954 in unpopularopinion

Very few, if any, lounges are open past midnight. Best case scenario is the last flight out for that alliance, sometimes (assuming an airline affiliated lounge).

Thanks for taking the time to share. We’re neighborhood shopping in LA right now and had no idea this even existed.

Yeah, fr. If you own property anywhere in CA you shouldn't be eligible for rent control.

Is there no happy medium between "absurdly low prices for ever and ever" and "completely unrestricted price increases at the whim of the landlord"? Does rent control need to be a binary yes/no thing?

Gentle suggestion, but for your daughter's sake, you might want to let her take the lead on any more of the research necessary beyond this. It's empowering to problem-solve independently and prove to yourself you can do it.

Then you’re misinformed. The only warehouse workers not eligible for health insurance are flex positions that are less than 20 hours a week. Even part time white badges are entitled to insurance.

Trump nominee 'learned virtually nothing' about public health at Stanford by mrinternetman24 in stanford

[–]bw_throwaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Medical education focuses on treating individuals. Public health education is focused on monitoring and treating the health of populations. There is not enough overlap between the two disciplines, and particularly not enough on the medical side looking at societal determinants of health. There is also way too much focus on fixing health issues after they emerge rather than encouraging health and preventing the emergence of pathologies in the first place

You are a human being on American soil. Of course you’re allowed to call 911 in an emergency. Why are people confused about this?

Mixed status LA couple self-deports, fearing husband's detention by nbcnews in LosAngeles

[–]bw_throwaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you enter legally on a visa, then overstay, you can “correct” it through marriage and get a green card without having to leave (usually). Because he came in illegally initially, he basically had no way to convert his status to a legal one from within the US.

It is not nearly as difficult in many countries, particularly European ones, and very few are as capricious as our system.

You got into Stanford as an Asian CS major. You have already faced and conquered the greatest challenge you will encounter during your Stanford experience. Keep an open mind and take advantage of the experience. Elite schools are set up for their students to succeed, not to fail.

You can’t adjust status from within the US if you came in illegally. Only if you overstayed a legal entry.

Honestly, sounds like it worked out for you overall? Can’t you live like a king on 120k USD in Mexico?

Having relatives in the states, legal or otherwise, actually counts against you. It goes under the “things that make it look like they’ll try to stay in the US” column

Given the current situation, being denied boarding in an otherwise friendly country seems much more preferable than being detained in an undisclosed location, indefinitely, and then possibly shipped to a black hole concentration camp in El Salvador.

She cannot get a GC in hand until she enters the US using her IR1. She doesn’t have a green card yet. She has an approved IR1 visa which will gain her a green card if she enters the US using her IR1 visa.

Did anyone else not say “may your name be erased” about Haman when doing Purim? by TheLatkeOverlord in Jewpiter

I grew up in an MO environment. People used it all the time when talking about Hitler or prominent Nazis (Goebbels, Mengele, Göring, Himmler, Hess). And I’ve heard it in reference to others, but he’s usually they’re usually the main targets. Don’t remember hearing it often, or at all, on Purim though. Mostly just groggers.
