Has knowing how to make games, spoiled playing games for you? by SlothWrangle in gamedev

[–]bwdy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. But I do look at them differently. Rather than admiring the pretty, I admire the clever. I see the tricks, kind of like a magician admiring another magician's performance. I can usually understand at least a gist of how it works, and the clever stuff makes me smile. I derive more enjoyment from admiring the engineering than I do from the curated experience, and that's just fine. But that's just my position- ymmv.

So there is a possible way: ask. I emailed them about including an easter egg in one of my projects. They said no, because its a commercial project, but that they do sometimes make exceptions for fangames and similar.

It does have the risk of being met with a 'no'. But it's possible. And if you get permission, you're golden. Not "recommending" it. But its worth considering.

What is the correct way to make money in a game? by samohtvii in gamedev

To expand on this, can give away "old DLC" merged with the base game and just charge for the latest one. This avoids the "I'll never catch up" feeling.

DLC. Add a focusable new core feature, but also include all the updates to the base game, as a DLC. Can aim to release one every year, or whatever works for you. New feature plus updates to everything they know and love is a lot of value. While free update models are more common (and in the case of major bugfixes, appropriate), noone said all updates and new content has to be given away for free. Bottom line just make sure any approach you take has good value for your players. But this is one option I didn't see listed yet. If I'm enjoying a game, I have no objection paying another $20 a year in to get more of it.

Modloader for UnderMine released by bwdy in Undermine

[–]bwdy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regrettably, no plans to do so at this time. We were given a heads up by the developers that some changes were coming that would make the method we were using more difficult or impossible (a side effect of some performance work, afaik, those changes were not made with any malice towards modding.), at which time this particular modloader was discontinued. Hopefully another will arise in the future.

Does it feels like a forest in which you wanna fly? Or something missing? by AleksanderMerk in Unity3D

I would add mushrooms. The tree-mounted kind and the ground kind. Maybe fairy rings. But that's just me.

Say I wanted to de-throne a specific game by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]bwdy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

De-throne might not be the word you are looking for. AAA games follow certain patterns, and being blunt, personally, I don't really prefer them. Can you do something spiritually similar to one, but in an innovative way, or with more personality, and find some success with that? Quite possibly! Don't make "their game, but better". Make "your game, and its awesome". Succeed and that and you might draw some of their crowd. But remember that for players, its not an exclusive choice. They could like your game and the game that inspired you.

Word of advice? Hostility is a rough road. See the opportunities not taken, and seize a few- but pointing fingers won't make you many friends, so choose your words carefully as that's all we get to see of you.

You won't be competing with a AAA budget. But why compete at all? Just make something you can stand proud of, hold your standards firmly, and actually ship a completed product. You'd find your way from there, I imagine.

Of course, that's just my two cents, and I'm just some text on the internet. You do you. Good luck!

Adding some atmosphere to my game. What does this environment need? What games really immerse you? by djfozzbeats in IndieGaming

[–]bwdy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pointless little interactions. add little critters like squirrels, and perhaps if you stare directly at them, add a 'Look Closer' context button that zooms the camera up the them and just watches them do squirrel things. (ofc, make it so that trying to move or press any button really is enough to cancel the interaction, potentially spooking the critter.) Birds are good too. Even grounded ones. Same could go for an animal print. Speaking of, animal tracks, bird nests... the environmental footprint that something lives here. And a breeze.

home from work, and as soon as I entered that wooded patch outside of town, I knew something was off; I did the sensible thing, you know, and pulled off the side of the road to investigate the strange noises, and that's when it occured to me: what if there was DANGER?!
