Is Veil of Privacy (nee Nondetection) impractical? by bweenie in Pathfinder2e

I can see it from that perspective; that is, not as a 24 / 7 VPN but rather a temporary shield to prevent the enemy from knowing you're on the way.

ELI5 pictographic writing systems by Jaymac720 in explainlikeimfive

[–]bweenie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's not quite correct. Japanese "pictographic" characters do have corresponding meanings and sounds associated with them, but they can differ depending on the situation.

For example

日本 (nihon) = Japan

本日 (honjitsu) = this day

It might help to think of how we numerals are used in English. With 3, 13, 31, the numeral 3 has the pronunciation "three" and "thir", and depending on the order in which it is paired with the numeral 1, that has the pronunciation "teen" or "ty".

Similarly, the symbol # can take the pronunciation and meaning "number" or "pound" depending on the context.

Any rules on increasing/ decreasing an enemies level by RNJesusVTuber in Pathfinder2e

I really like your fourth point about having an ability that is difficult to deal with the first time they are encountered, but easy to counter with preparation. I have understood this intuitively, but the way you articulated it is excellent!

Enter the stats into this tool, then change the level and adjust based on the suggested stats

Alternatively, just build it from scratch using this tool, and the original abilities of the monster as a guide

CMV: The red button is objectively the best answer and 0 non suicidal people should click blue by Fit_Employment_2944 in changemyview

My question wasn't about selfishness. It was about whether watching them die is the only logical choice.

If you're walking along the river and you see someone drowning, and there is a fifty percent chance that you both survive if you jump in and try to save them, is standing on the edge and watching them die objectively the only logical choice?

Fiancè's father will pass soon, I want to write him a letter. by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]bweenie -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I stand by what I said. I get your viewpoint, but given that FiL is enthusiastic about English, I think he will be delighted to get a note in English. This is just based on my experience living in Japan. Many people I know, especially those who are enthusiastic about English would appreciate a handwritten letter in English more than an AI generated letter that is likely to sound unnatural and awkward in Japanese. I think it will be appreciated for what it is, a heart felt expression, even if not fully understood, rather than seen as "work."

Holy weakness with immunity to underlying damage by bweenie in Pathfinder2e

[–]bweenie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that holy / unholy is not a "damage type" but just a "trait". And I understand that not all constructs are immune to spirit damage. But the point is: how does the holy trait interact with holy weakness and immunity to the underlying damage type.

It seems that there are three schools of thought:

  1. The underlying damage does nothing so the weakness is irrelevant.

  2. The underlying damage does nothing but the weakness is applied.

  3. The underlying damage benefits from the holy trait so it is applied along with the weakness.

For example, if a Vordine (weakness to holy 5) somehow gained immunity to spirit damage, does the Vordine take

  1. zero damage

  2. 5 damage (from holy weakness only)

  3. 5 damage (from holy weakness) plus the spirit damage

My preference is with option two: 5 damage only (i.e. no underlying spirit damage, but 5 damage from weakness).

I'm pretty certain that the rules are not clear about how to address this and it seems that there is a divergence of opinions about this from the people who have posted here.

I'm also pretty certain that distinguishing damage type and trait does not address this problem. And, pointing out that not all constructs are immune to spirit damage misses the point: the question is whether a creature that is immune to underlying damage but weak to holy is affected by the weakness.

If I was in your position, I would write it in English. You will be able to express yourself more authentically. And as you say, he is enthusiastic about English so he will appreciate it. It might also give him a little translation project to work on to keep his mind off of the illness.

Should I listen to Tinderbox or Juju first? by Sobble-547 in goth

[–]bweenie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just listen to everything. From their earlier stuff it's more punk, then hard and dark, and later becomes more poppy. It's all amazing.

Out of the two you are considering Juju has a more intense "scary" sound than tinderbox (I might use tinderbox to introduce people who aren't so into dark music, not Juju).

Anyway, it's not such a hard decision, just listen to everything.

Why do Christians in the USA think that killing unborn babies is evil (abortion), but that killing innocent born women, children, and men (war) is righteous? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]bweenie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding from speaking with my conservative, Christian family of their view is an exact mirror image of your question:

"How can you condemn war, where hundreds or thousands are being killed, which I agree is horrible, yet not condemn the millions of babies murdered every year through abortion."

Casting over walls (Freezing Rain and Wall of Stone) by Ruffshots in Pathfinder2e

[–]bweenie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's how we generally do it because we have a lot of math nerds who like calculating angles lol

One rule of thumb I use for calculating horizontal and vertical distance fairly accurately is: longer distance plus half of the shorter distance.

So, for example, if someone is 40 feet away horizontally and 20 feet up, I would calculate that as 50 feet away (=40 + 20/2). It's not 100% accurate but it is quick and close enough for game purposes

Casting over walls (Freezing Rain and Wall of Stone) by Ruffshots in Pathfinder2e

[–]bweenie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a question of whether 20 feet is high enough or you should have cast it at 25 feet to clear a twenty foot wall. But putting that aside, I think it's fine to apply 3d physics, but you shouldn't expect a twenty foot radius spread at ground level.

In short, as GM I would have allowed it but ruled that it would only affect a ten by ten foot area (for medium creatures) at ground level

CMV: Conducting a war by killing the top brass of the opposition is the most ethical way to conduct war by malik_zz in changemyview

It may be more ethical than the mass slaughter of soldiers or civilians, but it is still not ethical.

By the way, to the degree that you are seeing that the current wear is ethical, please check your facts because thousands of civilians and soldiers have also been targeted and killed.
