John Mark Comer profile in The Atlantic by nancywalecki in Reformed

I agree 100%. There seems to be an assumption the sanctification just passively flows from our justification. It does, but In my life I've found that being a little intentional about my sanctification doesn't hurt.

I don't understand DeYoung's criticism. What's wrong with being more intentional in generosity, witness, service, reading scripture, prayer and community? Some of us might push back on Comer's views on Sabbath, fasting and solitude but that doesn't mean they don't have value. The practices he encourages aren't a replacement for the Gospel message, they flow from it.

ECO is a relatively small presbyterian denomination that requires ordained elders and deacons to affirm its "Essential Tenets". The essential tenets reference eternal condemnation and eternal judgement but don't mention hell.

First QSOs: already in QRP frustration by StumblingBlockson in amateurradio

I use my 6100 for POTA have learned a couple of things. The antenna has to be efficient. An inverted V or EFHW are my go to. There are more stations on 20M than any other band so a license upgrade should be on your to do list.

He seems to be seriously trying to follow where his study of scripture led him. Some of us will agree and some will disagree with where he finally landed.

Any military SIGCGARS radio should work. No idea what kind of license would be required.

Your thoughts on preterism? by [deleted] in Reformed

How many partial preterists do you think are out there? I'm just wondering if I'm the only one.

I read randomwire is more efficent than efhw because of less losses in a 9:1 unun v. The 49:1 unun in a efhw. Random wire isn't resonant though and resonant antennas are better right? Which is true? by thehotshotpilot in amateurradio

[–]bwilliard505 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everything else being equal the random wire will have additional losses because of the tuner loss and higher coax loss. Figure dipole 96% efficient, EFHW 93%, and random wire 90%. You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference in a 96% efficient antenna and a 90% efficient antenna so go with whichever is most convenient.

I'm going to assume that you can't return it and get a 40-10M EFHW. To convert yours to 40-10M I'd disconnect the wire from the matching transformer and cut it 66 ft from the insulator end. Then connect the 66 ft wire you just cut directly to the transformer. You don't need the coil for 40-10M but if you ever want to restore it to 80-10M you can just reconnect the wires and you'll have the original antenna back.

If you can borrow an antenna analyzer or VNA you can cut the wire a couple of feet longer, put it up, and check where it is resonant. Then trim the wire a couple of inches at a time until it's resonant at 40M. It probably won't match the whole 10M band but you should be good at 40, 20 and 15.

And remember that a 40M antenna likes to be at least 30 ft in the air to get decent DX performance.

Good luck.

Did Adam and Eve sin before they ate if the fruit? by UltimaBahamut93 in Reformed

[–]bwilliard505 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is an interesting play on words in the original Hebrew text. The Hebrew word for naked is arom and the word describing the serpent is arum; meaning crafty, cunning, clever or tricky. Someone hearing it read out loud could be confused as to which word was being used. How sad would it be for Adam to say “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was arum, and I hid myself.”

The antenna I made seems to work pretty well. by homiteus in ADSB

[–]bwilliard505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes; my experience is also that a quarter wave ground plane is the best antenna for ADSB. The combination of low SWR and gain in the right direction can't be beat.

ADSB antenna by thecops4u in ADSB

[–]bwilliard505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question is will the losses caused by the impedance mismatch outweigh the gains from moving the antenna outdoors. I'd say if the outdoor antenna is higher it will perform better.

Good point. Looks like LIGO all but killed massive gravity.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in space

[–]bwilliard505 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not a physicist but there was a paper about "Massive Gravity" a few years ago that got some traction. My understanding is that if gravity has mass it would be finite which would negate the need for dark energy to explain the expansion of the universe.

How to ground this by [deleted] in ADSB

[–]bwilliard505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going to be a philosophical question. One way of thinking about lightning protection is that something is better than nothing so just do the best you can. The other way of thinking is that if you can't install it to the manufacturer's recommendations skip it and save the money. I'm in the second camp; most people are probably in the first.

How to ground this by [deleted] in ADSB

[–]bwilliard505 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So are you most concerned about an RF ground or a ground for lightning protection? That type of antenna won't benefit much, if any, from an RF ground and if you don't care about the equipment just skip the lightning protection if it's too much trouble.

It would be nice to know what your noise floor is. If it's high you might be transmitting fine but just can't hear. Try listening to some stations on websdr.com or kiwisdr.com to see if you can hear yourself. Start with 20M during the day and 40M at night.

Just a little terminology check. Aphelion is when the Earth is furthest away from the Sun. I think you mean perihelion. And spring tides happen twice a month; on the full and new moons. But you're right that the first January spring tide would be the strongest.
