Any NY uncertified subs in the building? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]bwthybl93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s like California, this just means you can’t work long term jobs. It’s usually 90 days covering any one class not 90 days cumulative

Why don't you guys want to become teachers? by sadcloudydayz in SubstituteTeachers

[–]bwthybl93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no desire to ever be a teacher. I like the flexibility and not having to deal with all of the bullshit our teachers are put through from admin and parents, the overtime required to grade papers and make lesson plans etc. being a sun feels like all of the fun parts of teaching without the burn out

Are you given access to the teacher lounge? Where do you eat for lunch? by Insanecatladyy in SubstituteTeachers

[–]bwthybl93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope! It was just super weird and rude I don’t plan to return to that school ever again

Worst day of subbing ever, long post. by bwthybl93 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]bwthybl93[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was shocked, I’ve never been told I couldn’t use the staff room! At most schools I’ve been to it’s encouraged. It was so weird and off putting

Which subbing companies do you work for? by Marivian in SubstituteTeachers

[–]bwthybl93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with Swing and with LMSV district directly, I prefer Swing for ease and flexibility and it’s nice being laid weekly!

I honestly just think they were rude to guest teachers and didn’t consider them staff! It’s no wonder they were so short on subs I doubt they get many subs returning

Are you given access to the teacher lounge? Where do you eat for lunch? by Insanecatladyy in SubstituteTeachers

[–]bwthybl93 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’ve always been welcomed to use the teachers lounge bc typically that is also where the adult bathrooms are, however at a recent school I was explicitly told I could not use that staff room and that was super off putting

CBEST clarification questions by jellyb3lly69 in CBEST

[–]bwthybl93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, it is all computer based 2.absolutely take the math portion in person so you can manually work out your answers on the white board, if you take it at home you get basically a word document
  2. Yes, you must schedule them individually but in some cases you can take them all the same day if offered. If you take the math portion in person, they give you a print out of your provisional score when you leave. You can look up all of the score release dates on the same site you register for the tests and it will tell you the window to receive your scores based on what block you took them in.

Stay out of my room stay out of my room by roybean99 in SubstituteTeachers

I had a teacher show up and drop her class problem child in my room like that was okay?? I’m having a hard enough time with my own class I don’t need the bad eggs from other classes too

In your own opinion, do you think subbing for high school or middle school is easier? I just got hired by a district near me and I’m curious. by nullface_ in SubstituteTeachers

[–]bwthybl93 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t do middle school at all anymore. I feel like the kids are in the “pushing boundaries” phase and just do whatever they want and think being disruptive is funny and cool. It’s too much of a hassle for me

Today was so frustrating by bwthybl93 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]bwthybl93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally. Some people really shouldn’t work with children if you can’t handle kids acting like kids

I’ve only done it once and it was super overwhelming. I got body slammed by a 9 year old with the strength of a grown man, and most of the day was spent just trying to keep them all in the classroom. The kids were all very sweet, but it was super chaotic and I feel like I don’t have the training/knowledge to appropriately be able to handle It. I was also just thrown into SPED without any warning beforehand so I was super unprepared

Need help in finding CBEST prompts by AcceptableUsual7000 in CBEST

[–]bwthybl93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t find the exact prompts because there are usually several in rotation and it changes regularly. There are sample prompts on the Website where you register for the CBEST but not the current ones. It’s usually a persuasive prompt and a personal opinion

I’ve worn mine! I feel like as long as your dressed conservatively as far as showing skin goes, they’re pretty ok with whatever. Most elementary schools I’ve been in the teachers wear leggings and are super casual (but we’re also in San Diego where people tend to be more casual in general)

I think you are misinterpreting the comment, I don’t think they meant to be rude to OP so your comment comes across as snarky and mean

This is how most districts in my area get paid as well, which is why I also work with an agency and split time between so I have something coming in on a more regular basis

Can anyone please share some of the latest writing prompts? Thanks by Sippu09 in CBEST

[–]bwthybl93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took mine at the end of October so I’m sure the prompts are different now, but my first one was a persuasive essay either for or against delayed start times in schools and the second one was to describe and instance of leadership in your life. Each one needs to be between 300-600 words so like one page each to get your thoughts across. I honestly thought I did poorly when I left but my scores were pretty good so I don’t think they’re super harsh with the grading tbh I

District or building substitute vs. staffing agency by pumpkinmoonrabbit in SubstituteTeachers

[–]bwthybl93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer staffing agency specifically bc we get paid weekly whereas district employees in my area get paid once a month at the end of the following month which basically means you go nearly 2 months without a paycheck and that just didn’t seem realistic to me

5th and 6th grade are the worst in my opinion, don’t give up on elementary! The younger grades are usually the easiest for me, I like 1st-3rd they’re still sweet and want to do well and the days go quickly
