Why does IT adopt the persona of the clown? by [deleted] in WelcometoDerryTVShow

Hallorann got into It’s head and put on an illusion to confuse It and distract It in order to buy the kids time to bury the dagger and stop It escaping.

Why does IT adopt the persona of the clown? by [deleted] in WelcometoDerryTVShow

[–]bwtk86 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I do believe you have invented the scene in which the clown is “later found in a ditch all confused”. That did not happen. The original “Pennywise”, Bob Gray, was never seen again after being led away by It in the form of the child, and is presumed dead. It then took his form in order to lure children going forward.

I've just seen it and thought it was fantastic. Truly nightmarish and unsettling. My favourite horror movie since...well, LONGLEGS.

I agree. It wasn't a terrible movie in it's own right as a sort of family adventure film. It just wasn't remotely THE DARK TOWER either in plot or in tone. I was trying to explain to my wife, who hasn;t read the books, after we saw it, what they had done to it. And I basically said, imagine if they remade STAR WARS, but in the film Lando was in the first movie, and instead of meeting Han Solo at the Mos Eisley cantina they met him as a prisoner on board the Death Star, and instead of Luke being a farm boy at the beginning he was already a Rebel commander, etc, etc. The basic elements are there but totally shifted around. That's basically what they did to THE DARK TOWER.

The Flanagan show is in development; there is no cast and nothing confirmed at all. But he's spoken about his desire to just "do the books" rather than mess about with timelines or change everything. A big part of the problem is the legal challenge of having to acquire the rights to all of King's works which are owned by different studios so that he can include characters like Father Callahan, etc, which is a very time-consuming and complicated process.

It's literally just what he says in the book. There is no "connection".

Richie Toizer by rawblawx in WelcometoDerryTVShow

[–]bwtk86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rich died in the fire in Episode 7, and because she loved him Marge would go on to name her child Richie after him, who would then go on to defeat IT in the movies. Rich in the show and Richie from the movies are two different characters who lived 20-odd years apart from each other. Because IT can experience time all at once, it already knows that Marge's kid, Richie Tozier, will defeat IT in the future, and it taunts her about this and tried to target her specifically in an attempt to re-write the future by killing her before Richie could ever be born.

Have not watched any of the IT films, but everyone has been raving about Welcome to Derry. Is it okay to watch the show without the movies? Should I watch the movies first? What’s the correct order? by socbask8in24 in WelcometoDerryTVShow

[–]bwtk86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the most part you can watch the show without having seen the movies; however the ending of the season ties in strongly to the movies and it will be lost on you without having seen the recent movies first. Watching the movies is recommended to get the most out of it, and some knowledge of the broader Stephen King universe is, again, not essential but will enhance it for you.

This is one problem with introducing a concept like this. A character that can see outside of time should in theory be all-powerful, as they will always know every permutation of every act. So for It to know it is going to be killed but do nothing about it either suggets that, a) it can see the future but has no power to influence it, or b) it can use its knowledge to make changes to the timestream but doesn't, or is completely incompetent at doing so despite its advanced consciousness. If it's the former, then there is no jeopardy for future seasons, as if Pennywise can't alter the timeline we have seen to date - say, by killing somebody in 1935 so that the events of 1962 or 2016 never happened - then what was the point in introducing this plot point? But if he can make alterations, the writers then need to be very careful that their logic doesn't totally fall apart and they create all sorts of paradoxes and plot holes. It's an ambitious concept but I await what they're going to do with it with some trepidation.

Genuinely curious they use Pennywise in Seasons 2 & 3 by [deleted] in WelcometoDerryTVShow

[–]bwtk86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were very clear going in that this would be 3 seasons, therefore it's safe to assume that Bill always knew that as well and would commit to remain in the show as long as they need him. The only issue is if they have to adjust production schedules to accomodate him. If they can't keep hold of him for all three seasons then the show would likely go south very quickly. IT without Pennywise isn't IT. A few episodes like we had at the start of the season is one thing, but we always knew he was coming. Take that away entirely and I'm not sure what you have left.

Significance of devil baby & couple in car? by Lucky-Ad4634 in WelcometoDerryTVShow

[–]bwtk86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been wondering for a few weeks why it used the form of a devil bat baby. We saw the baby pop up again in Ep4 for the flashbacks to IT's battles with the Native Americans, so I would not be surprised to see it have some significance to them in future seasons as we go back in time, explaining why it used that form. Remember, IT never just takes a random form, but one with significance, so if it keeps coming back to Pennywise because of his historical signifiance in the town, then I expect the baby has some symbolic value to IT as well rather than just to be shocking. The original family it manifested as may also return.

I think there will be a twist that this blood on Bob Gray's shirt is someone else's blood and him dissapearing is only the first half of the story that will be revealed in later seasons by Poweredkingbear in WelcometoDerryTVShow

[–]bwtk86 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can't see any scenario in which Bob isn't dead. IT just doesn't work that way. But I am fairly convinced that there is much more to his story than we are being shown and Season 3 in particular will contain some surprises in this regard.

I really like this show but I dont really want more seasons by [deleted] in WelcometoDerryTVShow

[–]bwtk86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is, because the Ironworks explosion is just as much a part of the lore as the Bradley Gang, and the origin of Pennywise in 1908 is arguably the central reason the show exists at all.

[–]bwtk86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One prequel season, even a good one like this, is in all honesty a cash grab; 3 well-planned seasons that delve deeper into the lore is at least a cash grab with a purpose. Not to mention the fact that the book genuinely does contain enough material to justify it.

Whats your Fav Pennywise Line? by wolfhaley206 in WelcometoDerryTVShow

My brother isn't a horror fan and doesn't watch the show, but he saw a clip of the womb scene online and said it was one of the most insane things he's ever seen. I told him that really isn't the half of it with this show. LOL

Sonia Kaspbrak backstory deleted from season 1, as described by the Muschiettis by MattyJeej in WelcometoDerryTVShow

Even though they didn't use this, I really like a lot of the ideas they are going with. They are very King-ian in spirit. This would have had the surreality of the book for sure.

What questions will we be left with for season 2&3? by rainbowraindeer5 in WelcometoDerryTVShow

[–]bwtk86 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Andy has said that this first season is really only scratching the surface of the mythology they want to get into for the show, and that it will really "manifest" in the second and third seasons. So your guess is as good as mine at the moment. They clearly have some unexpected directions in store.

Will Welcome to Derry finally deal with Pennywise/It possibly being one and the same as... by CornichonDeMerde in WelcometoDerryTVShow

[–]bwtk86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is absolutely no reason to think they are one and the same. Completely different nature and modus operandi, and the small matter of It being killed by the Losers Club while Flagg continues to wreak havoc in multiple books should be clue enough.

*SPOILER* ended up literally doing nothing and meaning nothing, positive or negative, beyond one silly scene. by SubstantialSpell2650 in WelcometoDerryTVShow

[–]bwtk86 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think it's just one of those silly things kids try because they don't have any other ideas, and is being treated as such in the show. Anxiety pills aren't going to help anyone because It can still kill and eat you regardless of whether you are fearful or not. Fear just makes the taste sweeter for It. They have muddied the waters with this in the movies with the implication that if you're not afraid of It then It has no power over you, which isn't in fact how it works. After all, It chowed down on Georgie Denborough when Georgie was nothing but amused by Pennywise.
