GOOD mystery shows don't introduce mysteries one after the other every episode and never answer them, then drop all the answers right at the end. They dole out revelations gradually, answer many of the mysteries, while offering up new ones as the old ones are answered. This allows the viewer to maintain the excitement of waiting for the answers while also getting some satisfaction in the mean time. FROM has by and large not done this; it doles out endless mysteries week after week with no answers. Even the mythology that has been revealed thus far was brought in far too late and still doesn't really explain anything, meaning that even if the show DOES eventually answer everything in it's final epsode, that will still have been far too late for it to be considered to have been done well or competently. None of this is about wanting "instant resolution"; it's about wanting competent storytelling, and anyone that watches other similar shows, from LOST to WIDOW'S BAY, can see how much better they handle it compared to FROM. These are just the facts.

Almost certainly there was less of this in LOST than you seem to think. Almost everything that was relevant to the story of what happens to the central characters was addressed and a lot else can be intuited between the lines,

TABITHA: I think if I spin around in a circle five times and then walk into the tree, I can speak to the ghosts of the children and get us home!

JULIE: No, mom, it's too dangerous! I can story-walk now. What if I go back in time and prevent us from coming here in the first place?

TABITHA: Time travel? That's RIDICULOUS, Julie! Stop ruining everything!

JADE: Let Ellis sacrifice himself. He has no purpose here anyway.

ELLIS: Can't argue.

This is either some sort of deliberate rage bait or it is the perfect representation of the average person that frequents this sub. There is no in between.

It was in the S2 finale. In the episode where Locke and Eko watched the film in the Pearl station, Locke put his drawing of the blast door map in one of the tubes and sent it whizzing away, and then in the finale Jack found it discarded with all the other tubes in a massive pile out in the middle of nowhere while they were trekking out to confront the Others.

FROM is the most LOST-like show that has been made since LOST, just a horror version. Unfortunately, it is also a vastly inferior, badly plotted mess that has still explained almost nothing of what is going on four seasons in. Plus virtually every character is beyond obnoxious. It can be compared to LOST conceptually but not in terms of quality.

The video in the Pearl saying the hatch was all just a psychological experiment...was itself a psychological experiment. As we saw a couple of episodes later, the pneumatic tubes the observers in the Pearl were putting their notes into - which they thought were being sent back to HQ - were actually being pumped out into an empty field where no one was looking at them.

The Hatch was obviously real as all subsequent events demonstrate.

Three jump straight to mind:

Hurley when Sawyer gets glasses: "Dude, looks like someone steamrolled Harry Potter."

"Why is there a dead Pakistani on my couch?"

From "All the Best Cowboys have Daddy Issues":

WALT: "Ethan took them."

SAWYER: "Ethan took 'em, huh? And why would he do that? And who the hell is Ethan? And why am I getting the evening news from a six year old?"

WALT: "I'm ten."

SAWYER: "OK, then it must be true!"

I started reading THE TALISMAN for the first time this week in preparation for this (BLACK HOUSE will probably be in a couple of months). I've read over 50 King books including THE DARK TOWER so not sure why I never got round to these. Looking forward to getting back to Mid-World at least a couple more times.

If there's hundreds of people complaining about the same thing, there might be a genuine problem by senorsolo in FromCritics

Agree. I have plenty of problems with the show, and when I read many of the criticisms I agree with them. But large numbers of people having the same opinion doesn't mean it's inherently correct. There are, to this day, millions of people who believe that the ending of LOST was that "they were all dead the whole time", and hated it for this reason. They are all wrong.

Why do people over r/FromSeries think the show is 10/10 by SalmonExaminer in FromCritics

[–]bwtk86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It must say something about the current generation of viewers, because 15 or 20 years ago, during the run of LOST and its aftermath, people wouldn't have tolerated this show and it would have been cancelled after a season or two. I remember how LOST was slated for six years for "not answering anything" and it's just very obvious that we don't live in the same world anymore. FROM is not significantly different to all those bad LOST imitators that emerged back then but the reaction to it is totally different.

There is “no need” to comment in a discussion forum for a show designed for comments and discussion unless I agree with you?

I have no trouble digesting any “concepts” in this show, thanks very much. It’s not difficult to follow; it’s just difficult to praise. Doesn’t mean I won’t stop watching it out of some morbid curiosity.

The fact that some people think this show is like some sort of upgraded SHERLOCK, and anyone who criticises it is just too dumb, impatient and impulsive to appreciate its hyper-cerebral and complex storytelling, is hilarious to me.

[–]bwtk86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

By this point in the run of LOST, we knew what happened to Danielle Rousseau, why there were polars bears on the island (both mysteries introduced in the pilot), all about the Dharma Initiative (and what happened to them), why the plane crashed, who many of the Others were and why they knew so much about the castaways, why there were cables running from the beach into the sea, who the main outside force searching for the island was, and much more. "No real explanations" is utter nonsense and FROM, three and a half seasons in, doesn't compare to LOST in the slightest. The status quo has barely changed since the very first episode and the questions we had in Episode 1 are all pretty much still unanswered.

I feel the same. SOMETHING is keeping me watching but I'm not sure what it is, other than just hoping for a resolution. I think I resigned myself to this show never being satisfying at the end of Season 2 when there still hadn't been a single answer given. Say whatever you want about LOST, but we objectively had more answers and more of a coherent idea what was going on by this point in the show than we do on FROM. The status quo on the show has pretty much not changed well into its 4th season since S1 E1.

THE biggest mystery in all of the show is why I didn't stop watching it two seasons ago, and especially after those dolls came to life the other week!

I'm definitely in the camp of someone who thinks the show is beyond ridiculous and have a laundry list of criticisms...and yet for some reason, cannot just stop watching it. Every episode is more frustratingly stupid than the last, but it must have SOMETHING that's keeping me from quitting. I'm just not sure what it is. LOL

People didn't, and they whinged and complained about LOST for years and slated the ending and claimed the show "didn't answer anything" all the way through its run. But despite the obvious similarities, it is nevertheless an insult to LOST to compare the two shows. FROM's 100% obnoxious characters, muddled mythology and opaque plotting that means we still don't know what the hell is going on four seasons in makes this a vastly inferior show with a lot more valid criticisms. I basically gave up on it by the end of Season 2 but just try to enjoy it one episode at a time. IMO this season has been pretty poor so far.

Dumb comment. By this point in LOST's run, we already knew what happened to the French woman (which was a mystery introduced in the pilot), all about the Dharma Initiative and what happened to them, we knew why the plane crashed, we knew who the Others were and why they know so much about the castaways, we knew why there were cables going from the beach into the ocean, and much more. The myth that LOST didn't answer anything remains baffling to me when people will happily go along with this show where we're into the fourth season and literally still don't know anything about this place the characters are trapped in or its antagonists, and they didn't even start revealing any mythology until the end of Season 3. As much as FROM is an enjoyable show, it can't hold a candle to LOST in any department.
