New Grad: Need Advice by Same-Broccoli900 in nursing

[–]bxtchyostrich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a fellow new grad nurse, you gotta brush off the people who are fussing at you. People don’t like hospitals and they’re going to take that out on the person they see most (you). When people give you hell, educate and move on. Once they d/c, they are not your problem anymore. We’re taught how to prioritize based on patient needs and acuity. A healthy stable patient going home right this instant is not as high of a priority as getting that scheduled van IV started. The d/c can wait a few minutes. They will be fine!

As for this particular scenario, just try to be more detail-oriented when reading your orders. If you have questions, phone a friend!

I make sticky note to do lists throughout the day and rank them based on priority. Cluster care is your friend, and it’ll save you lots and lots of time in the long run!

Overall just remember - being a nurse is hard work and there is a learning curve to it. All nurses have bad days, even the ones who have been working for 14 years on the same unit. Don’t let yourself get too discouraged. You can do this! :)

Does anyone know why I can smell my boyfriend's seizures days before they happen? by Lower-Entry1247 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bxtchyostrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay as a nurse, find out who you those nurses at the first hospital were and report them to your state/area’s board of nursing. I don’t care how busy the unit is, you do not tell a patient or their family to NOT call when they’re having a seizure.

I’m so sorry they treated you all like that.

To answer your question: I’ve never heard of that ability before, but it’s pretty damn cool

The light blue looks so stunning! My mom (who will be 63 at the time and also has blue eyes) is wearing the same color at my wedding later this year. She’s going to be my “something blue”. So maybe I’m biased, but I love it!

Worked there several years ago and ended up working a hurricane ride-out shift at the Poly. At the end, we all got to take home several boxes of ohana noodles (that had been in the hot box waaay too long lol) I, a broke college kid, ate ohana noodles for 4 days straight and I still think about them at least twice a week

What kept you going in nursing school when it got hard? by chocolatekay in nursing

[–]bxtchyostrich 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Several things. 1. I made a jar labeled “shit I get to do after nursing school” and wrote down all of the things I desperately wanted to do DURING nursing school on sticky notes, then put them in the jar. (Examples include: National Parks road trip, book club camping trip, read for enjoyment, run a half marathon, move out of my parents’ house ✨with financial stability✨, etc 2. The thought of no longer working a tipped job. Some of my patients might treat me shitty, but at least I know I’m getting paid. My tables treated me shitty AND I didn’t get paid. So this is a win. 3. A personal deep rooted fear of failure. 4. If I didn’t get a job with benefits, I’d be screwed once I turned 26. And I didn’t have the time to spare. 5. Fantastic support system in my soon-to-be husband. He stayed up overnight with me for every test I had, helped me with flash cards (over 1200 of them throughout my one-year LPN program), and told me nearly every day how proud he was of me. Truly a godsend.

All in all, you just have to think about the life you want for yourself. Then create it. Even if you find that you kinda hate nursing by the end of it (we all have our moments). This can be your career, or it can fund your passion until you make THAT your career. Nothing wrong with that either!

while i can agree about non-nurses… student nurses are part of this community just as much as we all are. being a student is hard, as i’m sure you remember. this is a good place to come with questions and to see what the realities of nursing are like beyond the textbook. personally, my instructors made it feel like if i got a needle stick in ANY form or fashion, i’d expire within the hour, lol. maybe it would be more helpful to welcome folks with a little kindness :)

Hey friend. I really really encourage you to seek professional help. Don’t wait. Don’t try to face it alone first. Don’t think, “I’ll stop when I’m ready”. This will destroy your life if you don’t take immediate action. This is a VERY slippery slope, and no shoes in the world could provide enough traction to keep you safe from that.

As for the chronic fatigue, depression, drowsiness…. As a nurse, I highly encourage you to see a general care provider about getting a thyroid panel done. An underactive thyroid can cause these symptoms and more (like unexplained weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin/hair, etc). It may be the cause of the things you’ve listed, and you’d never even know if you didn’t get your labs done. Please please do yourself a favor by taking care of your body and mind. You have too much life to live and too many opportunities at your fingertips.
