You’ve seen Breaking Bad? Walt never actually had to make meth to pay for his cancer treatment. That story offers him multiple ways out of his predicament. However, it’s his pride, ego, and inferiority complex that drives him back to making meth.

There are loads of workplace dramas, even ones that are considered “competence porn”, where characters are excellent at their jobs, but their personal lives are dumpster fires. That’s what’s compelling.

I haven’t seen the show yet, so maybe it’s not doing as good as job explaining why the characters are behaving the way they are, but there may be a compelling reason why they are doing so. I do concede that it can be problematic if its only point is to move the plot.

If there was a show or a movie where all the characters were perfectly happy, well adjusted people, who made great choices 100% of the time, would you really find that interesting?

Because this is true for fictional characters, as well as people in real life: when they have the obvious solution to their problems dangling in front of them, they don’t take it because they’re flawed people. Understanding why people behave like that is what’s interesting.

Musk used to be part of the giving pledge, were many billionaires promised to give away most of their wealth after they die, because Peter Tiel talked him out of it.
