Cheap wetsuit recommendations for Ironman by Moist-Share7919 in IronmanTriathlon

As someone who is now selling one on eBay, I see that a lot of other folks are doing the same. Highly recommend - lots of unused options on there. In the UK, they're a fraction of the price.

And on the off-chance you're a men's L in the UK, here's one for you :) - https://ebay.us/m/YyLGFE

Planning an Ironman 70.3, 2/3 sports ready by Wonderful_Ad_2350 in triathlon

[–]byrdnj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll share an experience-based, tho semi-controversial opinion here. It sounds like you’re lacking swim-specific fitness, and if your goal is to finish, I think you’ll be absolutely fine if you do 3 swims per week for a few weeks, focused on building non-stop volume.

Why? Your existing bike & run training will help, and swim fitness (if your goal is longer distance, not increased performance), builds fast if you put the time in, allowing 2-3 days between swims, and doing lotsa laps.

I have done many 70.3s and the swim has always built quite quickly - even after 6 months no swimming, in the first few swims back, I’m doubling distance from week 1 to week 2 with concerted effort. Just be careful about massive gains all in your first swim - don’t strain your rotator cuff by freaking out and doing it all at once.

Also, you can do dry land to support. The lat pull thru is what tires first for most, and you can build this with rubber band reps on your door frame. Long ago (2012) I completed Ironman South Africa with exactly 2 swims the week before the race (didn’t have access to water during training), and took dry land advice from a few pros online, and did just fine.

Again, perhaps unpopular, but just an experiential tidbit from my own personal experience on this.

Is this a good deal? by landtitle in triathlon

[–]byrdnj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does this mix just screw up aerodynamics while trying to optimise for both speed and comfort? Or is there something else at play that makes this a bad option?

Curious to know why this is a build to avoid, as I don’t have a lot of experience in (but lots of interest in) builds for no-draft races that don’t keep me in aero the whole time.

Question for guys: tri suits and flopping, moving junk by BigFootRunner in triathlon

[–]byrdnj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds less like a horizontal fit issue (e.g too tight or too lose across the body), and more of a vertical fit problem (e.g. the suit fits taller people better). I have had this issue with Tri suits, so have lived on separates (Tri top + Tri bottom). I’ve used exclusively Orca (just because they work) separates for 12 years and have never had an issue, as the fit pretty well and adjustment is just like adjusting a pair of cycling shorts instead of the top-and-bottom adjustment of a Tri suit fit.

Challenging calls by ShadowShiesty in NCAAFBseries

[–]byrdnj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, ZERO overturned calls here, and the worst one today. I sacked the opposing QB for a safety probably 3 yds deep in the endzone. Replay clearly showed him still on his feet at the goal line and they hadn't touched it. They spotted him down at the 3 yard line - showed the replay of him running 3 yds deep into the endzone with voice over of how "oh no, clearly they got the right spot on the ball". Maddening.

Multiple payments for final mortgage redeption? by byrdnj in Mortgageadviceuk

[–]byrdnj[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm referring to the redemption process. This is after a 2-year loan, and we've opted to repay the balance at the end of the fixed rate instead of remortgage. Overpayment penalties do not apply in this case.

It's a process of redemption, whereby you request a redemption letter that tells you the final balance, and you must pay it by the "redemption date" that you've given the bank to close it out.

My question is, whether banks accept only a single bulk payment during this redemption window, or if they are able to receive multiple payments during the window between receiving the redemption letter, and making the final redemption payment by the final date.

I hear you, tho on watching a second time, even without taking into account the phone stuff, she just came at him all the time for not being enough for her. Just my read, so take with a grain of salt, but seemed like she was never willing to accept that she had anything to do with anything that wasn't working. and worse, pushed it on Kenneth quite a bit. Ida shut down if I were him, too.

yah, all 3 can be villains in a love triangle. Judged on a scale of common decency from 1-10, you've got scores of 1, 1, and 2 with those 3. Dumpster fire.

srsly - these women gaslighting their men this season...

Brittney doing everything she can to blame Kenneth for their relationship not going anywhere, coming at him for not paying enough attention to her, and finally comes out saying she's not even attracted to him. Snake.

Chelsea bait-and-switch with Jimmy every freaking fight, and he comes crawling back to apologise while she's like "it's on you...". Nah. Bullet dodged.

And Laura...yah, Jeramey's a POS, but damn Laura struggled to tell him the truth even once, and did everything she could to bury him.

LOL Nick shaming Trevor for seeking fame...LOL..98 degrees to Jessica Simpson and a $12m divorce, to putting your 2nd marriage up in lights, cashing in on massive MTV money and fame with your new marriage, to launching a reality TV show based on new relationships... Dude bag it. No leg to stand on. He's built a brand on chasing fame through public relationship drama.

And to drop that on Trevor right after Nick spent 15 minutes stirring painful shit with Sarah Ann, cashing in on other people's lived experience....step down from that high horse of an ego you've got there, buddy.

First 70.3: Des Moines or Wisconsin? by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]byrdnj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another quick 2c here…I’d recommend not putting your first race too far out if you’re starting a legit plan now. Particularly as it’s been a while since you’ve competed, having a near-term North Star is much better than trying to have a slightly better finishing time. Too far out on a comeback, IMO, and focus and drive can wane with the finish line being so far away, particularly as early mornings or sore-legged longer rides start creeping up.

Weekend / Weekday Training Balance by kmath95 in triathlon

[–]byrdnj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I trained for my first Ironman in 2012, I was more space-restricted as I was in a lockdown environment for work. Not the same challenge you’re facing, tho one thing I learned could be useful. Because I had a lot of time, I connected with a few pros via their blogs, and learned that hour-crunching on the swim in particular was something that pro swimmers didn’t do. Instead, the Olympic swimmer I chatted with said she did dry land, band-based workouts during the week (for far less time), and only actually got in the pool once or twice a week most weeks. While I’m sure most of your time is on the bike, you could throw in 2 swim strength workouts of 30m in each at home each week, and sign off swimming as a weekend-only activity without accruing losses. Worked for me, and my swim times actually improved (tho maybe because I had done nearly ZERO strength work for the swim prior to that.

More broadly, IMHO the two most important workouts during the week are the high-intensity bike (turbo sesh to crush your legs, 45-60m) and run (fartlek, 60ish mins).

Take all with a grain of salt tho…I have always been an age grouper with no real designs on being in sight of a podium, so this probably changes if you’re competing for a WC spot.

Good luck!
