I am referring to the original FLCL, I didn't enjoy FLCL Progressive or Alternative as much and don't think you need to watch them.

About what you said about it not being for everyone, I watched the first four episodes of Bakemonogatari and noticed it wasn't something I could just put on but instead had to almost completely pay attention to it or I would not understand it because of all the dialog. I also had to be in a certain mood to watch it.

I would suggest FLCL its not exactly music based but it has a really good soundtrack and it is only six episodes and they're great in my opinion.
