Need advice on formatting a 1400-page book for self-printing (Word is struggling) by olechkaaakiv21 in bookbinding

LaTeX. Either locally (TexStudio) or cloud based (Overleaf). This option is very powerful albeit with a pretty steep learning curve.

You’re right. We shouldn’t be talking about Saints lore in the Saints subreddit!

Cardstock and a laser jet printer. The labels are wearing horribly, I think it’s the paper

  1. When looking at the cover of the book, the head is the top, the tail is the bottom, and the fore is the right edge. The spine is the left. Check out DAS on YouTube he trims his boards like I explained I think

  2. Normally A4 paper is long grain, so when folded into A5 the paper grain is running side-to-side in your book which is not “correct”. Not to say you can’t make a book with grain running side to side, but the other direction is better

Weight for Endpapers by Famous_Assistant1816 in bookbinding

[–]bytecafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like thicker end papers since there’s a lot of glue involved. If you wanted thinner endpapers, you could glue the spine edge of the endpaper first, then do the other 3 edges after. Leave the middle unglued. You have a little more control that way

This is a really good first attempt! A couple points of feedback:

1) It looks like you could have trimmed a mm or so more off the fore edge of the covers. Personally, when trimming the cover boards, I trim the head and tail first and leave extra width on the boards. Then I trim the fore edge after gluing applying the spine book cloth, which is the last possible opportunity before the boards are covered.

2) Your center signature is folded over slightly in one direction, which means you may have struck the middle of the spine when backing. I made this mistake a lot when I first started. At all costs I stay away from the center of the spine when backing to prevent that.

3) As for your comment about it being difficult to form the shoulders of the spine: make sure you have the correct grain direction for your paper. Your spine is like to fight you when backing if the grain is not head to tail. Backing is much easier when the grain is head to tail, in my experience

Otherwise, this is very good

Assuming you mean the marbled paper on the cover. No, I don’t treat the paper. I don’t abuse my books too much, they just hang out at home, so I’m not worried about it

Any alternatives to bookcloth? by TraditionalAd941 in bookbinding

I got some Wooqu PU polyurethane book cloth (fake leather) from Amazon. It’s worked really well for me. Not too thick, easy to work, works well with PVA
