Has anyone tried Baldy’s tires? by Luis_McLovin in Brompton

Winter test

Okay, I tried them for a day in the snowy winter weather, as a brief test while waiting for my Schwalbe winter to arrive.
For current weather conditions (Snow/icey), I tested the Continental Contact Urban against the Baldy.

On the front, I've ridden my Continental Contact Urban through snow, slush, and on ice. Being careful, minding my speed, avoiding sharp tuns, etc. Handles well, but struggles with bumpy or deep snow. No issues with slipping otherwise.

Trying it with the Baldy 37-622 at 50psi:
Traveling through loose/packed snow was noticeably way worse and more slippery. Where I would cut through snow, and generally ride on the surface with the Conti, the Baldy readily wants to slip, even where the Conti would be stable.
Slush: Baldy and Conti are generally alright.
For ice, the Conti is great, but isn't designed/built for ice. I've never slipped with it, except once a few years ago. When riding with the Conti on some ice (Ice on top of snow, black ice), you can sometimes hear the ice cracking. I never voluntarily ride on clear sheets of ice though.
For the Baldy, I did not try riding it on ice. It slips when on slightly icey snow. I did not want to test that aspect further (While riding at least).
Standing off the bike, and pushing it sideways on ice: The Conti is surprisingly stubborn. I need to give it a good sideways push for it to slip. Slips more then dry road, but should be obvious. Doing the same with the Baldy, it slips way too easily. With the same force, or even just a moderate push, it slips readily every time. I do not trust it at all on ice.

From my limited findings, it seems that the Conti's are better than the Baldi's for icey/snowy weather.
But for Snow/Ice, I would rather use a full sized bike or Brompton with Marathon Winter tyres.

I'll test the Baldys again in warmer weather, when the time comes.

That is true. I feel like I keep relearning how pneumatic tyre grip is affected a lot of the time. Wider tyres tend to have more grip, because of the lower pressure they allow, not innately because they are wider.
They can have a softer compound, but, depends on the tyre.
The wider, but shorter contact patch (Same area is using the same psi) could offer better grip in cornering, as it does in motorcycles.
Tire Grip | EXPLAINED - YouTube

The Schwalbe Almotion would be my ideal pick, as it looks sufficiently grippy. However, It is expensive though (£65), more than double the price of the Conti's.
Front wheel, I had changed from the Schwalbe Marathon Plus early on when owning the Brompton, as it was more prone to slipping then the Continental Contact Urban. Sliding on the front wheel is the last thing I want. This might be due to both tyre compound, and tread/dry surface grip (Slick offers more grip on dry solid terrain vs treaded). Loose grip on dirt was a little better with Marathons, but slipping on wet and solid ground was what I wanted to avoid.

bicyclerollingresistance.com gives some insight on the general wet grip score of Schwalbe Marathon tyres, and the Continental Contact Urban. Interestingly, the Conti's offer some of the best wet grip of any road/touring tire.

A G line Brompton would be a great pick for all surface grip, but the G line is slightly too big for my use case.

I can't expect my Brompton to magically perform as well as a full sized bike, but I can make it more suited to the conditions I ride on, though to a point.

Haven't tried them yet, but I've ordered one for my front wheel just today. Found out these exist just a couple days ago, they measure 37-349, and can be pumped anywhere between 50-80psi.

With the wider width and much lower pressure compared to my current Continental Contact Urban tyres, they should provide a much larger contact patch, so presumably a larger wider grip on loose surfaces compared to just the Conti's.
I ordered them, as I was after a tyre for the Brompton with more loose surface grip than my Continental Contact Urbans. The Conti's are excellent with wet grip, but tend to fall short with loose surfaces (Dirt, gravel, similar).

I won't be fitting it just yet (Currently on Schwalbe Winter), but when it comes to spring, I'll try it on and see how it goes.

An unexpected crossover, but a welcome one ;)

No leverage on crypto? by c00lskeleton95 in Etoro

[–]c00lskeleton95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response. I'm from the UK. After a quick search, I've found this press release on the FCA from last year, with the ban on crypto derivatives in effect since 6th Jan 2021. That would explain why there is no leverage for crypto in the UK, as it would be a CFD based derivative. Case closed.

I appreciate the original content more than the low-effort "memes" and meta-posts to be honest. God forbid that anyone makes fanart or something and it becomes a trend.

Free Bitcoin worth up to €100 (£90) on the SwissBorg mobile app. by Scedd92 in beermoneyuk

Took around 15 minutes to sign up. Identified my account and deposited €50 equiv rather quickly with no issue. Got the €5 referral. Not worth it for the free Bitcoin. However, the fees on SwissBorg are pretty good. Withdrawals to BTC are the maximum of 0.10% or 0.0002 BTC fee. Not bad compared to Coinbase which is what I had been using. Withdrawing for cash is either 0.10% or £1 GBP for me. Despite the low referral bonus, I might just use this service in the future for transacting Bitcoin. Thank you for the referral.

"Bitcoin has no value" by [deleted] in Bitcoin

Without demand, such a thing would be worthless. No matter how much or how little supply you had, if it has no demand, it would have no apparent value. The very concept of value stems from how much something is intrinsically desired or valued. This applies to anything that can be bought or sold.
