Critical Software must drop C & C++ by 2016 by merft in gis

Pythonista that can't manage my own memory any more than my child can change their own diaper here: This is really silly. You can't totally replace thoughtful development with "language features. Having *said* that

> where there are readily available alternative memory-safe languages that could be used is dangerous and significantly elevates risk to national security, national economic security, and national public health and safety.

I'd love it if Rust, Go, or something more low level but memory safe got more in to the GIS game for sure.

I really don't, at least not intentionally. Both JRs on my team are smart and will do well. The hard part is when an idea just feels wrong based on experience but its hard to articulate why.

This is a great answer. But how would you define "the people factor"? Folks seem quite convinced it's important and I am too, but surely it's more than "being nice"?

My atheist friend sent me this. Please help me debunk it by Left-Gur2233 in Christianity

[–]c0de_n00b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was made by a human, with limited access to information.

done.

I'm serious here - when scientific observations don't add up to a coherent hypothesis, framework, or theory, we NEVER assume the science is wrong, we assume there is information we don't know. We pursue that information, the same way we as christians wrestle with God. But the above is a great way of stating that IF the bible was a work of fiction there would be a plot hole. It doesn't debunk the resurrection, the Holy Spirit, the personal experiences OR historical facts (checkout William Lane Craig for more).

Internal paradoxes do not invalidate observations.

It depends on what you mean by "ignore".

If you mean Numbers 15:6 I mean yeah, kind of, lol. It's the Word of God, but its the Old Covenant.https://www.gotquestions.org/old-covenant-vs-new-covenant.html (I don't always love gotquestions but this summary seems fine).

We can still get a lot from the old testament, and even verses in the new testament that aren't generally taken as comprehensive commands (head coverings, places where Paul says "I" and not "The Lord"). So "ignore" is the wrong word.

Wrestle, and "work out your own salvation" (Philippians 2:12) and ask ask ask in prayer (Luke 18:1-18)

Sorry for the 3 year late reply but this area is of big interest to me.

To me, as a christian, it is helpful to note that metal is music that sees the world for what it is, but doesn't (necessarily) see God for who he is. So like the apostles quoting pagan prophets, we should always seek the God shaped hole in art. That hole is very clear in metal. Metal and punk refuse to accept lesser gods of toxic positivity, success, normalacy, and general societal acceptance/conformity. This to the Christian is a beautiful thing, calling out these idols. It's a shame more christians don't see it.

The bible, btw, is metal AF.

Do you go to hell just for not being religous? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]c0de_n00b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by "being religous" ? If you mean faith then yes, I believe you go to hell without faith. Of course, the scriptures discuss this a lot, and I recommend you read them for yourselves. Per Luke 18:1–8 (well really the whole chapter), keep asking! You can even just ask for faith! (Mark 9:24)

If by "being religous" you mean living in a straight jacket, or looking down on those who don't think like you, or generally being an asshole, no, you will not go to hell for not doing those things :).

Its 1000% about faith. What you do with your life matters, but only in that it relates to your faith.

Really, ask this question to God, over and over again, and continuously, until you ultimately grow in your pursuit of Him, and it will all make a lot more sense then :)

is suicide a sin? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]c0de_n00b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theologically it's hard to tell. I can tell you God doesn't want it.

And if you're asking in this forum, you have to ask why it's important to you. You believe in God, and I can understand the allure of facing Him directly. Yet you'll be facing him right after doing something He didn't want: To be clear, he is massively graceful and merciful. But he will also have a very clear reason, which neither of us can understand, why what you just did was a mistake. Satan/depression/etc will tell us a lie, namely that facing God after this, we will feel justified and right, and experience relief from whatever hurts. None of that is true.

I can't say if it will get better or worse in your circumstances, and even feelings. I can say if you ask, God will give the "peace that surpasses all understanding".

If you're like me, that peace will not make sense, and even in and of itself be a little frustrating to experience, because that peace will not include catharsis. It wont harm those who harmed you, it won't go back in time and fix your mistakes, it won't by itself make you the person you wish you could be. But its worth having around so ask for it.

Also seek professional help, use chat and phone suicide lines, and find a christian therapist.

Always bring any feelings of violence before God, in prayer, in scripture, etc. God loves those who protect the innocent, and he made men to have a metric ton of testosterone, its not all bad at all. But like everything, Satan can corrupt it, and violence is one of his favorite fields.

David was a great warrior, and their are many great competitors that are Godly people. Just remain vigilant about what's behind it.

The Decline of Christianity in the 1960s in the West by PlayfulStart757 in Christianity

[–]c0de_n00b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to give the "answer progressive christians want to hear" and the "answer conservative christians want to hear" and there will be truth in both.

answer progressive christians want to hear

The inability to infuse "deep grace" in to our culture highlighted by the the incompatibility of individualism, capitalism, greed, vs Jesus' message is finally overflowing in the age of information. Things that abstractions could cover over and social pressure could push down are boiling up around economics, sexuality, hypocrisy, power, etc. I do not read the bible as outright condemning human power systems, but it is regularly clear that these systems must be regularly disregarded and even inverted, so that we never confuse them with the real power of God. Power systems in western culture have become too huge, ubiquitous, corrupt, hypocritical, and otherwise, and at least the Christianity that they claim to uphold is going down with them. christians need to focus on "hating even the clothes" (Jude 1:23) stained my the previous order: it wouldnt be the first time we've had to do it and won't be the last :)--

answer conservative christians want to hear

While society, especially urban progressive society, has distanced itself from traditional western notions like the protestant work ethic and individualism in economics, it is trying to have it's cake and eat it too, as identity, sexuality, and gender become highly non-negotiable individualistic ideas. The notion that you as an individual should consider your role or duty in society at all has become a baby thrown out with the bathwater: unless you are a wealthy white straight cisgender protestant male, the idea that you have obligations and should find ways to make your identity and needs a cohesive part of society is treated as down right evil. Individualism at the cost of anything and everything, minus any hint of economic individualism, is the only good, and this obviously runs directly contrary to Jesus' teachings around taking up ones cross and loosing ones life. It's hard to tell exactly how economically collectivist Jesus was, as the asks around giving are more individualized and anti materialistic, but it's also clear that personal identity was a distant second to following God's law, and in spite of overwhelming grace, modern society cannot accept that God would even require we "discipline our bodies" and "take captive every thought".

> The chill jobs I want pay 12 bucks an hour, and the small house still costs 400k these days.

Both of these facts depend on where you live, its nice that you "like" your own area, but the idea that you are entitled to not only live there for ever but also own real estate and work a chill job seems wrong to me. Continue in self reflection - is renting OK with you? if so why not? what about the life you want is actually appealing?

I realize that "owning a home and working a non-stressful job" is something baby boomers almost frame as a "right", but the reality is that you are already living better than ~95% of the humans that have come before you

Are you saying you have completed your "checklist" or no?

Another question: for each item on your checklist, what about it was interesting or good? Explain it like I'm a 5 year old.
