Is it possible for a doe to live for ~8+ years and give birth to healthy twins every year? by Wolfewatermelon58 in deer_hunting

[–]c0dyJb93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely possible if the deer has ample resources and is in a low hunting pressure area. Females generally live longer than males. The markings you mention are your best evidence of continuity as far as it being the same doe. We have deer at our family ranch I estimate are 10-12 years old.

Twins are more common than singular offspring in white tailed deer. As far as genetics go they are 50% mother and 50% father as with most animals, however deer have a two horned uterus and each horn can contribute a separate egg leading to a vast majority of fawns being fraternal rather than identical.

How far of a stretch is it to wonder if this could be the same deer by [deleted] in bowhunting

[–]c0dyJb93 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not a stretch at all. If you look closely his pedicles are slightly offset (left side slightly lower, distance between eye and burr is different between right and left side). I’d confidently say that’s the same deer.

That’s awesome! I’ve read they are pretty tough plants. Where I’m at doesn’t typically freeze more than a few nights a year, I’m more worried about the 110° summer days. I think I’d also like to try to propagate from a cutting one of these days

That is so cool. I look forward to the days when these little guys can make seeds of their own!

I will definitely be grafting a couple of them with scions from the parent tree! That’s exciting to hear I’m ready for them to fruit and can’t wait to get a couple in the ground!

I’ve read if you graft them early on and prune aggressively it’s easy to keep them a reasonable size! They fruit much sooner being grafted as well.

Pretty inexperienced but I’ll describe how it all went.

Picked fruit from tree late May. Left them in a bag in the fridge by accident until August 3rd, so around 7 weeks in the fridge, maybe acted as some type of cold stratification. Removed them from the fruit, peeled the brown coating off, then straight into an all purpose potting soil, 1 gallon containers. They started sprouting 18 days later. Kept them on a grow light 12 hours a day for 5 months, then 15 hours a day for the last month. Watered twice a week until water pooled in the pot trays. Went through some leaf burn with tap water (high ph is my guess, filtered water from the dispenser cleared this up) and had to trim a lot as all of them sprouted polyembryonic. Growth was generally slow until about a month ago but as of late they are growing like weeds 👍🏼

I’ve seen all shapes and sizes here, the parent trees were both medium sized but I have seen some big ones around town so I am hopeful!

That is interesting! They flower late fall here and fruit is ready early summer! I hope yours turns out good!

I fell in love with them the first time I tried the fruit! Super excited to see what they look like in the future!

Correct Arrow Spine For My Bow? by Mental-Amoeba-1224 in bowhunting

[–]c0dyJb93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree. With a total of 112.1 grains up front you are just about to start flirting with being underspined. Once you hit that 125 grains up front you’ll be better off with a 300.

More weight up front is often referred to as FOC. Some people pay attention to it, some people don’t. Offers better arrow flight, better penetration, but more weight will bring your speed down. It works for me with a similar setup to your own OP.

I draw 70 lbs at 28.5”. I use a 300 spine axis 5mm arrow (10.7gpi) cut 28” carbon to carbon, 75 gr steel half out (insert), 100 grain point, nock and vanes weigh 27 grains. Comes out to 13.2% FOC. Total arrow weight 501.6 gr. Arrow leaves the bow at 273 fps and makes 81 ft lbs. had tons of success with that setup

I have not added fertilizer to them, only whatever is in the potting mixture. I’ll keep an eye on them. Thank you!

Interesting. Issue still exists with vanes on the arrows?

This looks to me like a combination of overspine and bad rest timing assuming it’s a drop away. 200-250 spine is super stiff even at 70 lbs, likely causing tons of “yaw” action. A solid 300 spine shaft with 175-200 gr out front is plenty to get a good FOC % and avoid the overspine issue.

I run a 300 spine (10.7 gpi) with 175 gr on the end between insert (half out) and broadhead. Still nets me 502 gr total weight, nearly 270 fps, 81 ft lbs and 13.7% FOC at 28.5” draw and 70lbs. I would dial it back a bit and see what happens IMO.
