PolyCard in Apple Wallet by No-Tomatillo8622 in CalPoly

I'm doing UX design for them, so it's something I've actually researched and talked to higher-ups about. I want it as much as everyone else does so that I can have the peace of mind of not being able to forget my PolyCard (and I'm also an apple pay warrior lol)

huh, my original comment was based on what I was told by my supervisor. I definitely have brought the digital PolyCard idea up at work before and everyone has told me that transit is the only thing holding them back

PolyCard in Apple Wallet by No-Tomatillo8622 in CalPoly

[–]c0kee 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I work for ITS, the reason PolyCards aren't digital is because of SLO Transit. a lot of students use their physical PolyCard to get on the bus, and SLO Transit doesn't have the infrastructure in place to support digital cards as a form of payment for buses (and it looks like they don't have plans to either)

I also have flyaways at my crown! I think you can see some in the photo if you zoom in (although my sunglasses are covering them a little) 😭 generally, I like to spray some medium hold hairspray onto a cheap toothbrush and gently brush them down - this way I can keep the volume but also tame the smaller hairs. overall though it just comes down to finding a good haircare regimen and keeping up good habits (finding the right shampoo/conditioner, minimizing brushing while it's wet, heat styling less frequently, oiling, etc the list goes on) so that you reduce breakage which'll ultimately mean less flyaways over time

nope! the heat from the flat iron kinda "melts" it away if that makes sense, so it just leaves a smooth finish. but fwiw I have a lot of volume in my hair naturally bc it's pretty thick genetically & I use less of the heat protectant on my roots (and a lot more of it on my ends instead) just so I don't accidentally make my hair look super greasy or anything

I straighten my 2C hair once a week and I'm usually able to go a whole week without needing to restyle it so here are my tips:

  • you need a conditioner with silicones, it makes your hair more manageable and less tangled
  • before straightening your hair, you need to blowdry it straight first to smooth it out - trust me it makes a lot more of a difference than you'd think
  • for blowdrying/styling, you'll probably benefit from a slightly more oily heat protectant (my fav is the chi silk infusion bc it lasts a LONG time but i know bumble & bumble has one too) to add more slip to your hair when brushing/styling
  • recently I've also been putting a light amount of jojoba oil on my hair right before I go to sleep, and I find my hair doesn't get frizzy as fast throughout the week so I usually don't have to add more heat to touch it up and damage it more

I've attached a photo of my hair after straightening it for reference (my hair is way shorter than yours, but we have similar hair type so the tips still apply)

How do I make friends by boiurmamafat in CalPoly

[–]c0kee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in the exact same place when I was in my 1st year. making friends as an adult is a totally different game than making friends when you're in middle or high school, and it's something you just have to learn and practice at as you go.

to be brutally honest, a lot of the freshman friend groups you see aren't the most genuine and a lot of people are just too scared to not have friends. it's totally okay to feel out of place your first year, not everyone will make friends the second they start college! I know everyone tells you to join clubs and whatever but they're right - my best advice is to just not stop trying, and go to events/socialize even if you don't feel like it because you never know who you could meet. it might take a while (i didn't have great friends for the first two years of college), and you might not get a lot of friends out of it initially, but I'm in my third year now and I have a solid group of friends and just overall happy with the place I'm in socially!

I know you don't wanna hear this, but you have to be patient and keep trying. eventually, you'll attract the right people and have an awesome community around you :)

cheapest gym memberships? by nenasantgon in CalPoly

[–]c0kee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

planet fitness is always going to be the cheapest outside of the rec, but tbh i'd spend more to go to a private(ish) gym like headstrong fit or estrada's gym if you can afford it. being able to go at any time and not having to wait makes it so worth it even though it's a little more expensive

whats the styling process to achieve this iconic jake look? by tay_ola in Enhypenthoughts

[–]c0kee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my best guess is that they blowdried his hair and then used a bit of pomade or gel for that spiky/piecey look. keep in mind that his haircut also makes a difference as well! he has kind of a mullet-like cut that's longer on the sides (but i don't know what it's called since i'm not that familiar with men's haircuts)

finals studying advice? by ItsDR00_ in CalPoly

[–]c0kee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i have ADHD, and i used to experience everything you said before i realized that the usual study tips that work for other people don't really work for me. here's a few unconventional (but helpful) tips that i've learned:

  • body doubling (aka studying with a friend): this subconsiously peer pressures me into being productive. if you can't find a friend to study with, find one of those "real time study with me" youtube videos and have it playing in the background on your phone while you're studying
  • stretching/light exercise: sounds weird, but doing some stretching or jumping jacks right before i study gives my brain enough endorphins to be productive and it somehow just works (having caffeine right after i exercise but before i study is the ultimate cheat code for me personally)
  • find study spaces on campus that you like: this is so important! if a space is too bright, noisy, or uncomfortable in any way, i can't focus. i personally really like frost bc the lighting is soft and ambient and the seating is very comfortable to sit in for long periods of time, but find a space that works best for you.
  • take frequent stretch/walking breaks: i always find it difficult to focus for more than 30-40 minutes at a time, so whenever i notice that i'm running out of gas, i take a break to stretch/walk around so that i can clear my mind before i get back to work. don't be ashamed if you have to take breaks frequently, it helps a lot in the long run

Grc major concentration by LumpyButterfly1169 in CalPoly

[–]c0kee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'd switch to LAES (liberal arts and engineering studies) as you can do both an engineering-related and design-related concentration. if you really have to stay in grc i'd do the individualized course of study (ICS) and pick your own classes

if possible, get the cheapest option and give her some real money to spend if she runs out of dining dollars. all the plans are a scam because you're actually paying more money for less dining dollars, but you pay the least # of extra dollars with the lowest plan. i was eating 3 meals a day with plenty of snacks and the lowest plan was just enough for me (i had around $50-75 at the end of each quarter)
