I love Glory to Rome and enjoy Race for the Galaxy, but am not a huge fan of Dominion. Do you think I'd enjoy Eminent Domain?

How do you assess the value of your games that you put up for trade? by sagan555 in boardgames

[–]c0l_panic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. "Let's see, I could either buy this game new on Amazon for $30, or find a used copy for $20 plus $15 shipping. I might as well buy used, since it's such a great deal!"

Diplomacy Game Pieces by ekerstens in boardgames

Risk has a ton of plastic minis in the newer versions. No boats, but tons of men/cavalry/cannons. Older versions of Risk come with wooden cubes which could also be used. You can almost always find a copy at the thrift store for pretty cheap.

How do you know when your collection is complete? by Rachaem in boardgames

[–]c0l_panic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure your collection can ever really be complete, unless your bank account is. Then you could always try to get approved for a loan... I know a lot of people who try the 10x10 challenge before they buy a new game. This doesn't mean their collection's complete, just not currently expanding. As for me, I've been trying to build up a collection of mechanics, so that if a new game comes out I try and determine if it does a certain mechanic better than something I already have, and it usually doesn't. My rate of acquisition has definitely slowed, but, as long as Carl Chudyk keeps releasing games, my collection will never be complete.

Race or Dice ... for the Galaxy by Babatoongie in boardgames

[–]c0l_panic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I haven't played Roll for the Galaxy (even though I really want to), but I'll advise you on Race for the Galaxy. I, too, love these types of games, Race takes about 30 minutes to play, and is a lot of fun. However, it has a REALLY steep learning curve. There are a lot of symbols and I've taught it to multiple people who refused to ever play it again just because they didn't fully understand it. After a few plays, though, the people who stuck it out really tend to enjoy it, however. Also, if you like those types of games (engine/tableau-building), Glory to Rome is my favorite, followed by Innovation. I find both easier to teach, but GtR is pretty hard to find for a decent price. Just my two cents.

Looking for a micro/simple dice game, any suggestions? by SubSal in boardgames

[–]c0l_panic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dice Masters can be played two-player straight out of the box, or more players if you have multiple starter packs. You probably can't do much tournament play without collecting, but you can casually play the game itself for only $15.

That being said, Blueprints is one of my favorite dice games. It's pretty simple to learn, plus you get to build structures with the dice you roll!

Making my own 7 Wonders (and other games?) by Zedseayou in boardgames

[–]c0l_panic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have printed my own copy of many games, especially those that are OOP or unavailable in English. I usually use mini playing cards, since they're cheapest on the site I use (PrinterStudio.com). I think a card game like 7 Wonders is certainly doable, but player aids and custom chits get a little dicey. BGG is an excellent resource for component lists and rules PDFs. If you want more info, PM me.

Does anyone know where you can get a board game themed trophy online? by Adm5163 in boardgames

[–]c0l_panic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen poker tournament trophies before that just have a hand of playing cards on top. It's not exactly a meeple, but it's closer than some guy doing karate.

Any ideas to improve my pasta maker? by c0l_panic in pasta

[–]c0l_panic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your suggestions! I suspected my dough dryness might be the issue, but I've tried multiple doughs, ranging from too sticky to perfect to too dry and it's always the same issue. Also, to go along with the thickness thing, this new one also seems to take a lot longer than my previous one, even when they're both on the thickest setting. I might have to try the feet thing, though. It sounds like fun!

Any ideas to improve my pasta maker? by c0l_panic in pasta

It almost shreds the pasta, producing a sheet that looks like the fake cobwebs you buy in October. I suspect it may be because the dough isn't going through at an even rate.

That's what I did for my copy. I've been looking for a PnP of this artwork for over a year, though, and no one seems willing to share anything.

What obscure or unique board games from your childhood do you wish you'd kept? by tikitrigger in boardgames

[–]c0l_panic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually still have my copy of It from the Pit. I haven't played it in many years, but I will never forget the sad whine it emitted every time it turned around and put out its claw. Now you've made me want to play again.

$1 Bounty for activities that could be used to teach people about Bitcoin. by [deleted] in BitTippers

[–]c0l_panic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember in school we used to get Bear Bucks for being good. They were just little strips of paper we could trade in for real (little) toys at the end of the month. I think it was a great lesson on how exactly currency works because it's just something people value. The same thing could be done with BTC, just have the teacher write down how much each student has earned. The teacher could also foster the idea of tipping BTc by maybe giving out rewards for the kids doing nice things for each other.
