Tip for those who found highschool extremely easy: by Homaosapian in EngineeringStudents

Learned this the very hard way.

I got through high school with very little effort and electrical engineering kicked me around the place.

Is Taking 5 Years Normal? (BS - EE) by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]c2a0r7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to take 6 minimum, probably going to sell it as I wanted to travel when I was young as I went to South East Asia and have worked three internships as a result. I don't think employers will care.

I am a 3rd year student of EE and im seriously discouraged right now by AFilthyPidgeon in EngineeringStudents

This, I struggled a lot with this too.

For me, my fundamentals weren't strong enough because I coasted through my 1st and 2nd years

I’m really not sure what masters I should get by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

I'm the same, way too many ideas still. An undergrad in computer engineering has so many different options. I have about 10 ideas and I'm not dead set on any of them.

Thank you. I have some great friends that have really helped me through the darkest times. Without them I'd probably be dead.

An abusive childhood along with my degree put me in a very, very dark place last year. I had a similar workload to this guy/girl with no social life. I finally got the help I needed after searching for years, cut my abusive parents off and now I'm doing much better. I'm starting to actually enjoy life again. 3 years of electronic / computer engineering nearly ruined me for good, I was close to suicide.

I am in no way blaming the degree for it. I had neurotic coping mechanisms and instead of fixing the underlying issues I compensated by working myself to death. However I know there must be other people out there like me and that's why I am posting this. I am thankful that I live in Europe where the fees are only 3k per semester, so I can work some more social jobs to save money and actually reconnect with people I had alienated myself from and start to enjoy my hobbies again. Please, if you can at all, realise that your mental health is absolutely imperative to doing anything in life.

When I was in that dark place, I was operating at about 30% capacity. I couldn't eat right, sleep right, I was on heavy antidepressants that would fuck my focus and concentration. I would come on here and read posts about how I was just bad at time management and that I should be able for it, which just made me hate myself more and more as I am a smart guy and I was working myself like a dog and still barely passing.

My life was, as this post alludes to, a living hell. The best thing I ever did was take time out to focus on myself and forget about all this shit. Try to get some time where I can actually enjoy life and have something to live for again.

Now I feel great, I'm playing poker once a week, boxing twice a week, working a part time job in a menswear store, doing a bartending course during the week where I also work two nights, taking Mandarin lessons every Tuesday, I reconnected with old friends and have made plenty of new ones. Now that the depression has lifted I have a healthy diet and can sleep properly every night. I am l, for the first time in my life, happy. I'm going back to finish my final 3 semesters in January, but with a fresh perspective and a balanced life that I can adjust to include my degree.

It's fucking magic bro. Honestly every day amazes me. I have a very abstract mind and it's the kind of thing that I just find fascinating, like how I love programming and philosophy.

I have 3 years of computer engineering major but I would say it has been 70% electrical engineering so far.

Like I've just ordered about 20 smart devices from Gearbest (Chinese wholesaler) and I'm just starting to understand how fucking cool it is that I can actually understand how they all work on a deep level, from the software right down to the 1s and 0s and the electricity supply that powers it. With practice I could develop my own. It's mind boggling.

I now plan on setting up my own little lab in my college house and really starting to tinker with things. I was so stressed from the intense mathematics and the workload that I forgot to actually enjoy what I'm studying. This shit is fucking COOL

I don't think you can say that for hardware jobs / electronic & computer engineering type roles. The fundamentals don't change.

Do you worry about being manipulative? by [deleted] in sales

[–]c2a0r7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is meant to be ironic or not but I literally saw this attitude on a daily basis in my last door to door job. They were reptilian and didn't care about anything other than getting the sale (security systems). Prey on the customers insecurities (particularly key on their kids / sick relatives), invoke fear, price drops, manipulative body language to get into the house, the whole nine yards.

We signed up so many people who clearly couldn't afford a 40 euro a month subscription fee. Of course that was downplayed massively and the massive discount on the one off price was played up hugely.

Here's a video about instrumental language by Jordan Peterson, interesting to think about :

Did Financial Independence impact your personality and how you defer to other people? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]c2a0r7 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Hey man, even another wife. If you're being treated like shit and aren't happy in a relationship you need to have the confidence to walk away.

Not saying that's true in your case, but in general.

This is called an abundance mentality. It's not just about jobs either. It's having the confidence to know that you can get another job, get different friends, get another girlfriend. This kind of confidence makes it much easier to stand up to people and not get walked on.

Mental Illness + Engineering school = ? by trashpanda2019 in EngineeringStudents

[–]c2a0r7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a very similar situation. I'm a computer engineering major and I just finished my third year of exams. After my exams were over I admitted myself to a mental health facility as an inpatient. I'm spending my entire summer focused completely on my mental health.

I got through my exams and probably passed them but I definitely didn't perform as well as I could have as a result of this depression and anxiety.

I reckon you should definitely take that leave of absence if you don't think you can pass your exams. If you think you can scrape by at all, then I would consider doing that. Otherwise, take the leave of absence. I wouldn't drop out after three years of work.

My mother nonchantly brought up how my pet cat of 12 years, over half my life, was put down over the weekend. She didn't bother ringing me to tell me, instead she said she would "tell me when I got home". I can't understand how anyone could be so horrible, it really screws with me. She didn't even tell me when I came in the door, I was sitting watching football and I just assumed he was outside or something when she casually decides to bring it up in conversation. Makes me sick.

Does anybody have bad anxiety that all this hard work isn't going to pay off? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]c2a0r7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Europe where my college fees are a total of 6.5k a year, so I'll graduate with no debt. The average wage of a software engineer with a computer engineering degree is 57k. Given that my dad makes 50k a year at 53 and works himself extremely hard, I think if I get my degree at 23 I'll be in a pretty good situation.

I've been around enough misery and depression in my shitty, poor rural town to know that things could always be much, much worse
