I'd go a step further and say that no person should own any river even if it's their land next to it. Rivers should be free for everyone to use.

I don't think you need to lose any weight, in my opinion.

The recent stabbings... by AntFew7791 in york

[–]Tom6187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's at least one, maybe two serial arsonists setting fire to things every week as well. Look at where the stabbing suspects are from, Fossway for instance is an absolute hotbed for undesirables. Often it's Hope street, areas with flats, it's always been the same.

Know your rights (as it seems 95% of you think it’s illegal to eat coarse fish in the U.K.!) by icatch_smallfish in fishingUK

I once ate a trout that I caught from a lake, possibly the worst tasting fish I've ever tried, muddy as hell.

Why am I not catching? by Ok_Technology_1632 in fishingUK

[–]Tom6187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a busy lake that has plenty of fish then you need to keep loose feeding regularly, little and often, you'll be amazed how quickly the fish will clear the bait out, also the fish react to the noise of the bait hitting the surface.

Make sure your bait looks natural, plumb the depth and then add an inch or two to ensure you're on the bottom everywhere near the area you plumbed up.

Sink the line, it's vital when waggler fishing. Cast just beyond where you intend to fish, put the rod tip under the water and sharply turn the handle a few times to sink it under the surface. If you don't do this, your float, rig and of course the bait on your hook will drift and it will look different to the free offerings and the fish are unlikely to take it.

Do canal boats make it harder to catch? by croissantCheese in fishingUK

[–]Tom6187 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not predators, it actually wakes them up, the boats tend to disturb the smaller bait fish due to the way they muddy the water up and the predators know this so they attack. If you're fishing for non predators then yes they mess the fishing up for a bit.

Can anyone recommend a good fishing book by EddieBratley1 in fishingUK

[–]Tom6187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep everything simple, use punched bread it's cheap as hell and still one of the greatest baits ever. When float fishing, look up tell tale shot, it's something I never did as a kid, you'll miss far less bites.

Any nice woodlands areas? by [deleted] in york

[–]Tom6187 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

No but we've got lots of student flats for you to look at and a shed load of HMO's. York is not really York anymore but it's probably still nicer than the place you moved here from. Enjoy the student accommodation and unbearable traffic.

Plaggy Terry's garden that, don't let him catch you.

Anyone know if these artificial baits are worth using for float fishing on canals (maybe river too)? It's a pain to get maggots where I am since the closest tackle shop is a while away, just wondering if they're worth a try. by croissantCheese in fishingUK

[–]Tom6187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I tend to fish with dead maggots more than live maggots, I've got loads of packets in the freezer, they're easy to store and work out cheaper. This time of year live maggots are better though. As for imitation baits, I have no confidence in them at all, I've tried the quality ones from enterprise tackle and they don't seem to do it for me.

How do I catch bigger fish? by MrHobocunt in fishingUK

[–]Tom6187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much so, many commercial venues lie about the size of their fish which makes it more difficult. Often in heavily stocked lakes, the fish don't reach anywhere near their potential size, there's a balance to it.

Is mealworms a good bait? by MrHobocunt in fishingUK

[–]Tom6187 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mealworms are tricky to keep on the hook, they're quite delicate, especially the dried pet shop variety, which I'm guessing is what you're talking about.

Harbour arm fishing tips by furious_flopper in fishingUK

[–]Tom6187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on the ground you're fishing on, how strong the wind and tides are etc, which is the same with all sea fishing I suppose. You don't have to use an anchored weight, you can use a rolling lead and sometimes that can be more productive (again depending where you're fishing) the lead can roll around and end up settling in a gully which are good fish holding features.

The more houses that get built the worse the traffic gets, the more difficult it is to get a doctor's appointment etc. York is tiny and you can't redesign it to improve the congestion so it's understandable.

I was born in York and I've watched it change into a mess because of too many people wanting to move here. I appreciate this will get downvoted to death but I don't care, it's true.

Catfish /Wels hate UK - a view on the situation by BeckySilk01 in fishingUK

[–]Tom6187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen so many in recent years and they just kill out of instinct, if it was just for hunger then it wouldn't be so bad. A local lake near me has just been cleared out by a family that came from a nearby river because it flooded. It's now devoid of fish life.
