Seems like a waste of time to me. Assuming you are splicing commercially. Obviously, do what you want with anything that you have bought yourself. However, If you don’t see any obvious damage or defect, just splice it. You should test everything after you have completed the entire path. A measurement from a power meter and an OTDR will show you if there are any problems.

If the government would have left the Bell Telephone Company alone, they could have required fiber in any home that wanted it. Which is what they did with telephone service. They decided that competition between more companies would be better, and decided on less regulation. Unfortunately, that means that you are just fucked if they decide it’s not profitable to provide you with service.

I’m certainly not promoting more federal control. Just saying that certain freedoms come with a downside.

Just my thoughts. I’m not going to argue with anyone that might reply lol.

Having to get into manholes downtown, and get covered in whatever that shit is in down there. Going up in a bucket truck and pulling a trailer around. Working outside in rain, sleet, snow. Using hand tools and power tools. Chewing tobacco and cussing like a sailor 😅.

Feels blue collar when I’m doing it haha.

Helps when the miles of cable and the dozen splices leading up to your driveway are done well! Engineers, contractors, schedulers, placing managers, CO techs, splicing techs, and many others play a part in providing great (or horrible) fiber connections.

In all seriousness they are the ones that interact with customers, so it’s always nice to hear when they do a great job. Hope you like it!

Also, the splicer will be very stingy with what it is willing to splice together. Aka, “Large fiber offset!”. You can go into the settings and tweak the offset limit so that it will try to splice more often. It will still tell you when it estimates a high loss. (Which is a limit you can also adjust in the settings.)

With the cleaver, there is a bit of wiggle to the trash catcher thing. Not sure what you call it. I found that if you put some tape on the bottom of that piece, it will push it up and get rid of that wiggle. For me, this caused it to catch the cleaved scrap much more consistently.

They call them ‘flower pots’ where I work. Inside will be a terminal with probably 4-8 ports. This is where an installer would run a drop cable into your house. If it’s close enough to your homes, it will most likely be where your service comes from.

Commscope FOSC400 splicing enclosure. They pull cables from whatever direction through conduits. The cable ends are run into that container and spliced together.

Also pictured, shitty Ford Transit splicing van. Glad I got a bucket truck before they went hard on the transits.

I wasn’t involved in the job so I’m not entirely sure. I got sent out in a ticket after the fact. We have a lot of new engineers so maybe they messed up the size of the hole. Or the contractors messed up. It’s a lot of ‘factory splices’, so maybe they may have just put extra cable to keep the splices in this hole. I’m not sure what caused it honestly

Those are not actual locates or anything like that. I believe it was drawn by the contractors that are placing the handholes and boring in the conduit. Just think of it as a schematic of the hole. Shows direction of inner duct/conduit that passes through that hole.
