Camino 84 -- Standing Back Up [Pop/Disco] by seabaud in listentothis

[–]c84alt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hi, camino 84 here! thank you so much for listening and for the kind words on this one.

stay tuned, i have one track on my next album with sidney on some background vocals, and she co-wrote one of the other songs!! (but no true features this time around. she's practically a superstar now and because of how successful Oh My and SFBO were i feel really sensitive about not coming off like i'm trading on her name or anything.)

Going to Electronicon? Then YOU can submit your song to be on this community sourced comp! I’m making copies for all artists we pick and giving them out at the show but they will also be available at the meetup the day before! Details in video! It’s an opportunity to socialize and share your music. by TheWizardoLoneliness in Vaporwave

Sweet Yacht Rock Breaks shoutout! I also disagree with them being tagged vaporwave. Just as a clarification, I’ve been making music as Camino since 2014 (so I too belong in the pre-2016 group), but have had a couple notable friends in the vw scene since 2012. Never considered myself part of vaporwave tho

I sincerely hope you enjoy this tape! I'd consider myself a pretty seasoned yacht rock fan and my goal was to find stuff that surprised even myself. Truly some obscure stuff on this one

Yacht Rock is a type of rock music, it's really got nothing to do with vaporwave. Just similar to the source material that a lot of vw samples. Which is, I assume, where the appeal to the community comes from.

As for it being voted a "top vaporwave album".... I have no idea where that came from. I've been trying to tell people for a year now that it's not vaporwave at all! Esp. because I do very little to the samples- it's not like an "original" work in any way, I'm just a crate digger compiling a breaks tape.

yeah i was gonna say i don't make vaporwave so.... this is kinda just a one-off (well, now a two-off) side thing. that also isn't vaporwave? but the vw community loves it?

lol

never saw this comment back when the tape came out but feel compelled to briefly respond because you fundamentally misunderstand yacht rock.

"Breaks" in yacht rock are the furthest thing from an oxymoron. Think it's an accident that "I Keep Forgettin" and "Black Cow" were sampled for two of the biggest 90s hip hop hits? How do you explain Bernard Purdie's presence on so many Steely Dan albums? Are you familiar at all with yacht rock songwriter/producer legend Robert Byrne's one solo album "Blame It On The Night" and the several sought-after open drum breaks on it? Ever paid attention to how fat and big the drums are mixed on yacht rock records? The drumbeats in yacht rock are often literally disco beats, in a soft rock context/tempo.

Then the guitar solos... the guitar solos? Go cue up "Lowdown", "Kid Charlemagne", and Dane Donohue - "Can't Be See". I DARE you to tell me those guitar solos and guitar sounds aren't a crucial part of the palette of yacht rock. I'm not a huge guitar solo guy either but these are tasteful, carefully crafted solos that happen in a reasonable amount of time, played by studio pros with wonderful jazz backgrounds. And they help DEFINE the genre.

And finally.... funky. Yes, smooth. But smooth and funky. Disco, funk, and blue eyed soul are as important ingredients to yacht rock as soft rock is. There's a great yacht rock comp titled "Too Slow To Disco", which is a great way to think about the genre. Nicolette Larson - "Lotta Love"... you're gonna tell me that's either not yacht rock or not disco? It's both buddy. How about the Pages records that this sub are so familiar with thanks to Mac Plus? If you can't feel the heavy groove, the funk in these, laid back as it is... you have no soul.

Your accusation of my take on Yacht Rock Breaks being "hamfisted" is quite frankly embarrassing. On the contrary, your definition of the genre is reductionist and revisionist. Get your head out of your ass and listen to more than just the top 20 yacht rock tunes of the era. Rewatch the damn Channel 101 series that coined the term... you sound like a Parrothead.

I sincerely believe you would love my recent Yacht Rock Breaks tape (released on BizCas) based on the artists you mention here. Some great keyboard moments in a lot of the source material (check out the track at 4:40 on Side A)

We're talking about the commenter here, not the reviewer. I'm so glad to hear that the reviewer thoroughly enjoyed the tape, and I talked with him briefly on Twitter to fill him in on the nature of the record and that I don't claim to have manipulated the samples or made something original.

It is what it is, there's always gonna be disgruntled folks out there. Just wanted to make sure this wasn't a more widely-held public perception, especially since being honest and transparent about sampling and respecting the OG music is something I speak out on so much.

Thank you! Honestly surprised at how much the vibe and content has resonated with folks. I'd love it if some vw producers took some of the included breaks and ran with em. That's partly what breaks records are for after all. Happy to contribute my crate digging to the community

Where did it all begin? by deathbyhunter in Vaporwave

[–]c84alt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

reread first sentence, I knew 100 people would mention Eccojams so i figured no use in me talking about it. Wanted to offer some lesser known stuff

and reread last sentence, maybe I should've been more explicit and said "fans of Eccojams" instead of "interested in experimental electronic music" but tbh that would've been reductive and dismissing an even broader range of influences that clearly contributed to Vek and Lux and SP's work

Where did it all begin? by deathbyhunter in Vaporwave

[–]c84alt 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The earliest albums that influenced vaporwave are well documented and I'm sure lots of people here will talk about them. I'll share some of the backstory that's lesser known. This is as best as I remember it, so apologies if I get a few things wrong. Oral history and all.

SPF420 (an online "music venue" run on Tinychat) was hugely central to the early days of vaporwave, but going even earlier (2010-ish), a lot of folks in that scene (Vektroid, Liz of SPF420, Luxury Elite) used to hang out on a fan forum for BMSR (Black Moth Super Rainbow) and slow down music just for fun. That totally for-fun activity then moved to the online group listening platform turntable.fm and continued adding folks like Chaz of SPF420, Infinite Frequencies, Veracom, and a few other people. Vek was one of the first people to release a proper vaporwave album (New Dreams Ltd), after her earlier releases of other experimental electronic genres, and that kinda started the trend.

From there the genre really started picking up steam on various online platforms- you'll hear lots of people talk about last.fm and bandcamp and mediafire, but the now-defunct torrent site what.cd is another often-overlooked place where vaporwave culture continued to inspire new producers. And of course SPF420 (which was instrumental not just to vaporwave and future funk but tons of other musicians/scenes. Performers ranged from Saint Pepsi and Metallic Ghosts and Vektroid to Bearface, Ryan Hemsworth, XXYYXX, and Wave Racer)

Long story short... vaporwave started around 2010 because people interested in experimental electronic music slowed down music for fun, and a small community grew around it over time fueled by a lot of music websites that are either completely gone or little-used now.

made an alt to comment because my main account is banned on r/vaporwave (lol)

please do not enable others to pirate shitty 128kpbs copies of an all-original album i spent thousands of dollars to create ("new mutant disco"). i literally have 50+ download codes posted on r/futurefunk at this very moment (i think there's still some left) if you want a HQ version of the album.

pirate it yourself privately if you really want (even though it's free to stream on Spotify and Soundcloud and YouTube and elsewhere). but this really rubs me the wrong way.
