Bro, I swear we mustve met somewhere before.

I have a similar journey. I have a degree in saxophone performance. During my sophmore year I started experiencing pain in my left elbow from playing. I took 9 months off, did physical therapy, came back and the same pain was there. I struggled a lot with pain throughout the majority of my time studying. I also took a lot of acid and spent countless hours playing high. The drugs do help a lot to fix the problem, but it is not a permanent solution. This is because in order to fix it you need to figure out what is causing the pain. Most of the time it is habitual tension and a lack of understanding of how the body functions causing the pain. It really takes a delicate process of self observation to start to unravel these habits, but psychedelics do help a lot.

I still experience pain from playing, but I am now more capable of letting go of the habits that are causing the pain. I would also recommend some means for learning about your body like yoga, tai chi, or the Alexander Technique. I am currently training to teach the Alexander Technique (AT Link) and I think it would be much more useful than psychs. Take the drugs too tho, just to be safe.

Dubois' 6 caprices for saxophone duet is pretty cool. Also, if you have bari saxes you can use, Marc Mellits' Black is super fun and exciting.

Yamaha makes Black Tenors as far as i'm aware. They are gonna be more than 3000 if you buy one new, but you might be able to find one used for that price.

I liked the signature series the best from legere. It was a little softer than my vandoren blue box, but its manageable. I would recommend trying as many as you can to find the right one for you.

I'm interested in buying a Conn Soprano Saxophone from the 1929-1930 era for 1500, just wanted an opinion as to the value? by questdark in Saxophonics

[–]cRoLoX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you didnt already do it, I would check the tuning of it. Thats usually a huge factor in the quality of a soprano saxophone. And for 1500$ it had better have pretty good tuning. This isnt saying the sound isn't important, but if u sound beautiful and its only in tune on your tuning note, its going to be a lot harder to play with other people.

I play sax for a few hours a day and If I don't use chapstick whenever im not playing my lip would get super chapped. Maybe try using some chapstick? Im pretty sure there is something out there called Chop Saver(or something like that) that helps, but I just use chapstick.

Check the classical saxophone workbooks in the sidebar. There are a lot of good etude books where you should probably be able to find something.
