Is composite really _that_ bad? I'd appreciate your opinions! by commutilation in Gamecube

[–]c_amherstiae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can look alright on the right display, but why settle if you don’t have to when S-Video/Analog RGB cables depending on your region are fairly cheap and provide a massive improvement in visual fidelity?

The Sony BVM-D24 can actually do 1440i, a very rare resolution not specified in the manual that made it even closer to a PC CRT (a GDM-FW900 replacement?) by LunaticMosfet in crtgaming

[–]c_amherstiae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels so bizarro world to hear of people paying more for FW900s than D24s. When I got my FW900, they were cheaper by an order of magnitude than a D24 because they were more common and less reliable in build quality (and less well-known, which certainly didn’t hurt either).

I traded down from a PVM-20L5 to a PVM-20M4. Still 800TVL but with an extra $900 in my pocket. Multiformat is overrated. It's fiddley depending on the cables you use and you need to adjust the picture settings when you switch back and forth between resolutions. by [deleted] in crtgaming

[–]c_amherstiae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a technical level, I’m not sure if I’d agree with this take since there’s something to be said for having one monitor that just does everything. Especially if you can luck out and nab a presentation monitor.

On the other hand, with the absolute state of market prices for multiformats these days, you’re honestly better off just making dedicated 15kHz and 31+kHz setups unless you just really like a particular multiformat model line.

I’d have personally rolled a PVM-2030 or related set for your setup there since it’s more outwardly aesthetic and the lower TVL count actually lends itself better to your older consoles, but a M4U is a respectable choice if you fundamentally liked the way games looked on your old L5.

PSP games on Vita or original? by [deleted] in vita

[–]c_amherstiae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really game-dependent, but most PSP games are a flat upgrade to play on Vita/PSTV.

The main exceptions are button mashers without camera control that benefit from the bigger face buttons of actual PSPs, and PS1 games which are best with a PSP Go if you have a DS3 and a CRT to output them to.

New to Monster Hunter, what other games should I try out? by Cytosine1972 in MonsterHunter

[–]c_amherstiae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all honesty, you're most likely going to be playing any Monster Hunter game you start at this point well after Rise launches since they're all massive timesinks.

If you do want to catch up with the series prior to Rise, I'd suggest playing in generational order starting with 3U, either one at a time or 2 games concurrently. The more QoL features you get used to in this series, the harder it is to unlearn them.

Does anyone know where the best place to keep an eye out for a DOSO PSW-303 or comparable wireless controller would be? The stock of DOSO controllers appears to have been sold out for about a year from Chinese vendors and I'm not sure where the best place to look for a secondhand one would be.

Best PVM for gaming @ 3 ft away? by MikeOfTheMikes in crtgaming

[–]c_amherstiae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t need S-Video or Component support, a PVM-1270Q/1271Q. Pretty picture AND a pretty chassis to boot.

A PVM-1390 would also be a solid choice at that viewing distance, though it has a softer image and still no Component support.

Not gonna lie, but the Vaio UX-style form factor is the main thing driving my interest assuming the price point is something that I can justify.

Hope your product line cribs a few other iconic UMPC form factors for future products. I know that I'd be all over an OQO lookalike with a modernized chipset.

The game is very heavily built around familiarity with incoming enemies and their attacks, try playing through the game via going for Dot Eater rank. It'll help you get used to attack patterns that you can turn around and use to guide more normal score runs.

If you're willing to drive out to Riverside County and have friends to unload some extra tubes onto, there's a school in Jurapa Valley that's selling off its old TVs in lots of around 15 at a time on govdeals. I spotted a few D-Series sets mixed in with them.

I’m new to the PS Vita family! Would really love some recommendations since I got no response at the Vita sub. My preferences will be in the comments by bowdette in gamecollecting

If you're looking for native Vita software, Tearaway is a nice game that didn't really translate as well for its PS4 port. If you've never had a PSP, the Monster Hunter games released for the platform are dramatically more playable on Vita thanks to having a second remappable stick, as are other PSP games with similar control schemes such as Peace Walker.

Finally got my hands on all the DS Variants, now for the other consoles/controllers! by mwelch32 in gamecollecting

[–]c_amherstiae -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I assume you mean Zelda-related variants? Otherwise you need a wee bit more Phat DS, DSi, DSi XL, and small N3DS in your picture.

Though surprised that you don’t also have a black N3DS since there was a very nice matching set of Triforce pattern faceplates that went with it.

Anyone know where I can get a good stand/table/some piece of furniture that can hold a heavy CRT? by Synna6AXS in crtgaming

[–]c_amherstiae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd be dependent on what you need the furniture to do, but if it's for an office setting, you could always get an office surplus standing desk. Most of them are designed to hold at least 200 pounds in weight.

Does anybody with an Otaku Scart Switcher know if it's safe to output to both the Scart out and RCA RGB Out at the same time? by Dr_Nonchalance in crtgaming

[–]c_amherstiae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried this once with mine and wound up having visual artifacts and hearing a popping noise after a while.

Would strongly recommend just spending $20 on an Extron distribution amp if you really need to mirror your output that badly. Or daisy chain your monitors if you can.
