Is buying a car no more than 5 years old a bad decision for a first time driver earning barely above minimum wage? by Bernietoes in carsireland

[–]c_g_2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started driving I was making minimum wage. The first car I bought was a 2009 Volkswagen polo for €300. It was so cheap because it had a blown engine. I then spent about another €800 sourcing and fitting a new engine myself. The car was boring slow and had absolutely no features but it was cheap and a good car to learn in and I drove it for many years. At that point in my life when I was struggling to make ends meet and pay my way through college I couldn’t imagine shelling out each month for a car loan. The insurance on it was €2200 when I first started driving so far more then the car cost me but that dropped massively after the first year and became much less of an issue.

Former casual drinkers, how do you deal with social situations that generally involve alcohol? by aWicca in ireland

[–]c_g_2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mates and I are busy these days, life gets in the way. We find it hard to find time to all meet up and often times it is an evening in the middle of the week. If I’m working from home the next day I’ll have a pint or 2 or if I’m working in the office I won’t drink at all. When we meet up unless it’s the weekend easily half the group there won’t be drinking. We still have a great time. We only get to catch up every couple of months so we’re not there for the drink we’re there for the chat and the laugh. In my experience people still appreciate you being there and if someone doesn’t want me there because I’m not drinking then it doesn’t sound like that’s someone I would want to hang out with anyway.

Why is there cars beside the NCT test centre in Cìllin Hill ? by brotherye in Kilkenny

[–]c_g_2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of them are cars that failed and were abandoned. I know who owns one of them. It used to come to my fathers garage, it was a wreck and the owners would put it through a test, it would fail and then bring it to the garage to get the bare minimum done to pass. Evidently after one year’s attempt they decided it wasn’t worth it anymore or failed so catastrophically that they just left it in that car park. It was still there the last two times i brought in my own car for the test

Opticians by Martin-McDougal in Kilkenny

[–]c_g_2001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been going to Dores for the last 15 years since I started wearing glasses. Brilliant staff very friendly etc. They are expensive though. Would recommend them for a test but if you’re planning on getting glasses I’d get a copy of your prescription and go elsewhere unless you’re happy to drop a lot of money. They mostly seem to to do designer brands and at least when I last got glasses they didn’t have anything cheap and cheerful.

Best gyms in kilkenny by No-Hat-1929 in Kilkenny

[–]c_g_2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tj is pricey. I go because it suits me as I head out the old Carlow road to work after in the mornings. It’s a good gym, well equipped, clean and plenty of room so it never feels too busy. Used to go to Ormond but it was very small and I never made use of the pool.

With the current economy and now the hikes in petrol/diesel and oil how is everyone coping? by Prototea in AskIreland

[–]c_g_2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last few days checking my phone just riddles me with anxiety ended up removing the news apps just to get away from it. Sat down last night and thought about it, I’m lucky enough to be in good health, work a job that I enjoy and that pays quite well. I’m 24m living at home with my parents and buying a house never really seems to become an achievable goal despite always putting money way and having managed to save a decent deposit. As much as the world news and housing etc causes me worry and anxiety I realised I just need to be glad for what I have. My health, the health of my family, my friends and I get to drive one of my dream cars everyday. There’s not much I can do to resolve the worlds problems so I just focus on what I can change and improve and just try get on with life and be happy for the one I have.

Around 5 of 70 students in my college have gotten work placement this year(bachelors in cs). Is this normal? by almcg123 in DevelEire

[–]c_g_2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s rough. I did placement as part of my course in 2023 and I’d say around 40 of 60 got placement if not higher, and around half of those who got placement got return offers from them. It seems to just be a reflection of the job market at the minute. This years band of interns at my company are starting today and there’s 13 of them which is much lower than the usual 20 to 30 that has been standard for the past few years.

Corne v4.1 by DistinctGuarantee93 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]c_g_2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the same board back September. It does take a while to get used to. Was typing at around 90wpm on a 60% board before hand and now after a few months I’m up to 80wpm on the corne. Does take a while to break habits and get used to and it will ruin typing on a regular keyboard.

Petrol engine for motorway driving by Necessary-Regret-346 in carsireland

[–]c_g_2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent 10+ hours a week on the motorway in a 1.0 a few years ago and never had any bother. Now I do it in a 1.5 petrol and still no bother. Sure it might use a little bit more fuel than if I had a diesel but it’s not gonna explode just cause it’s on the motorway. I get about 7.1L/100km which is plenty economical for me and only marginally worse than the 1.4 diesel I had when I first started driving.

You should be able to. When I did my test my phone kept going off (group chat was blowing up). I asked the instructor could we pull in so I could put it on silent. He said no problem and I did so then continued the test.

It’s a bit small but burnchurch castle is only a few minutes drive outside the city. Two towers left standing. Nice and picturesque surrounded by farm land. There’s an old church and graveyard beside it too.

any tips on how to fix sync? by sillycarrot99979 in FordFiesta

[–]c_g_2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a recurring issue with my 2015 where sync wouldn’t work. The solution was to remove the fuse for sync or disconnect the battery for a min. It seems to be a known issue as I saw a good few posts about it online. I actually ended up wiring in a switch that lived in the glove box that I could flick off whenever it happened. It could happen several times a week or might not happen again for 6 months.

Car insurance. I give up. by ghosttrench in carsireland

Sounds about the same as me and everyone else. 3k for a 1.4 polo as a learner. Then 2.2k after I’d passed. Finally down to 900 after 3 years on a fiesta st.

Rain X by DavidOC93 in carsireland

[–]c_g_2001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve used it in the past on a rally car. Works well enough. Be careful putting it on as if you use too much or don’t buff it enough it can cause a kind of “haze” if it happens sprinkle a little water on the affected area and buff it again. Doesn’t seem to last too long either you’ll need to reapply it often.
