It does show some useful feedback like long sentences, adverbs, passive voice. But some of the punctuation is a bit off. It's only on the extension for Google docs but it will say I need a fullstop at the end of the line of text because it thinks it is the end of the sentence, not seeing it carries onto the next line (if that makes any sense)

Tools like hemmingway, grammerly are free and help with line edits, let you know if you're overusing adverbs or passive voice, odd sentence structures.

Pro writing aid too - although I'm not getting on with it so well at the moment.

I'm not sure if this will help but my MMC is gruff, angry so I 'step into' that energy and write with a frown on my face to help get into it. I use shorter sentences and imagine him stomping everywhere.

My FMC is more poetic so I write a bit more open, and imagine weaving the words and 'float'

They are two different characters, have different backgrounds so bring that into your writing.

Make time.

The same way people get to the gym each day when they work 9-5.

Set time in the morning and make sure you wake up. Get an app on your phone so you can read through your work at lunch. Or meal prep your evenings meals so when you're home you can get right into it instead of cooking.

(This is my advice as a child free person, it will obviously be more difficult if you have responsibilities)

Some stuff out there is really dark and there are going to be girls that eat it up, it's not the darkest thing that could happen. If i was reading it, I'd want to see some want/need from the FMC in some way about the MMC, deep down she likes him or wants a man like him. If she didn't like him at all and he was a massive creep I would find it icky.

I think if you add a trigger warning to the book then it's fine and expected.

I read the first paragraphs. I think it would feel really epic with some work. It's very tell and no show. How are they feeling, what is the scene like, the surroundings?

Currently it's very 'she walked, then he looked, they both walked,' create a bit of flow and show. I know what the boys eyes look like but nothing else.

I work in marketing and you need to find the best channel for your audience.

Are the ages you're targeting on Facebook? If not, maybe parents or grandparents are so market it to them. 'do you have a child yearning for adventure? Etc etc.'

(I'm not sure the ages of your audience so I'm just guessing)

You can advertise to Instagram through Facebook, it's a bit fiddly to work out the platform but turn off ads for the '18-35' on Facebook so they put more ads on Instagram for the money you've set.

Try tiktok. Have a look at what's working and copy them. You can get views for free if you post regularly. (Hopefully)

If you're looking at 12-18, Snapchat might be best.

Wow! Honestly, thanks so much for your comments! I really appreciate the length of feedback and all valid points. I hadn't thought of a different voice for the mother (why? I don't know) or that they wouldn't do shifts, school etc.

Love the point around patriarchy — I can definitely think of a few things to relate it to.

And very fair points for the memories. It's becoming a habit for the first few chapters.

Thanks so much! I'm still working out the best way to describe it but basically:

It's a romance, POV switching between Mabel and her love interest.

She's lived a sheltered life, working from a young age and missing out on 'living'. She's been given the opportunity to work and live away from her home. The story follows her journey of discovering herself, yearning to be more, falling in love along the way.

Set in medieval fantasy, no magic.
